Reg should just go quietly away. YT link in comments
So appalling in so many ways. He’s not even singing in time.
Back in the day I loved the self titled EJ album and GBYBR. He kind of lost me after that
Any other examples of artists who keep going past their best?

Back in pub singer mode.
We saw Reg a couple of years ago and I wasn’t expecting much but my wife wanted to go. I was, however, pleasantly surprised. He’s not very mobile though and only got off the piano stool to climb onto a sort of stair lift at the end and disappear through the LED wall. This was after the piano and stool had slowly been moved on motors from stage right to stage left for the last couple of numbers. Glad I went, don’t need to see him again. Band were exceptional.
He appears to have some dental issues that cause a sort of lisp. Plus, he’s trying to sing a really hard song.
…he’s no longer ‘till tanding’, but ‘shitting down’.
I don’t blame the poor old soul ‘shitting up’ is pretty difficult after a certain age.
As much as I like Sir Roderick of Stewart, he really does need to call it a day.
Very few voices run unscathed past 60, which make the exceptions all that more remarkable. Very few rockers, for want of a better word, have coaching or tuition until they have already damaged their instrument. When it is too late, they get taught all these weird phrasings and breaths in odd places, to try and force the sounds into shape. With the result they all begin to sound the same.
Gerry Rafferty really ought to knock it on the head.
Brilliant. The BSH will never disappear from this forum will he?
I saw Iain Matthews a couple of weeks back as part of Plainsong lite with Andy Roberts.
His voice is in fine fettle – possibly even better than his heyday.
Do agree with @NigelT though – Rod Stewart should have packed it in years ago. Glastonbury was a massive embarrassment. Don’t know wether he has to posse of blondes to gawp at while he is singing or to disguise the fact that his voice has gone or both.
I was about to mention Iain Matthews and in total agreement.
Sadly Ian Anderson can’t sing any more though he won’t accept it. His flute playing is still great though.
Started with his throat problems some decades ago…
Saw 80 yr old Colin Blunstone earlier this year and although he looks like a living corpse his voice was as fabulous as ever.
Singers with either higher registers or basso profundos seem to do best. It’s those who holler out their mid range who fail hardest.
Jon Anderson still sounds pretty good too.
I saw the Beach Boys back in 2012 or so, when they did the reunion shows with Brian. They were rubbish. They were backed by a group of young musicians and easily the best part of the show was when the old guys went off for a break and the young band performed Darlin’, with the young keyboardist doing a great job at singing Carl Wilson’s part.
They should all just get off the stage. ABBA had the right idea.
Finally got to see Brian solo about 2016 and it was so sad. But it was Brian.
I saw him about a dozen times starting in 2000, it was never completely comfortable, but he certainly had some (relatively) good nights. The final time in 2017 was almost pitiful. However he had Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin in the band which made up for it somewhat. All other members of the band were outstanding every single time. Incredible stuff.
There are many many examples, but if they want to carry on then let them. You don’t have to watch the videos or pay for tickets to see them if you don’t want to, some people will and they may even have a good time
This ⬆️. I agree with Twang’s view on Ian Anderson’s voice – but no-one’s compelling me to buy a ticket. Good luck to him – but I won’t be in the audience these days.
Thirded. I’m pleased that Shakey, Macca et al are still out there and creating, but I haven’t bought anything new for decades.
Most people who go to see Macca are civilians, not AWers, who just want to see him and hear some Fab tunes while he’s still upright. Which is fair enough. I’d rather listen to my In Mono LP box.
Patti Smith and Robert Smith still sound the same. Whether that’s a good thing depends on your personal preference.
They don’t sound the same and never did! Hers is far more of a woman’s voice than his. Just cos they’re related, doesn’t mean they share the same vocal characteristics.
Obviously I meant their surnames sound the same when spoken. Surely that was clear. 🙄
You’re quite right, they do. Never noticed that before.
You two should get a series….
Or a room
Or a series of rooms
@Jaygee Arf!
Do they sing ‘Hand in Glove’ when they meet up for a sing song?
Diddley and Gary?
I can see their names in lights on Broadway!
More probably on an old music hall poster down among the wine and spirits.
Brilliant!
The Who, Yes, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Peter Gabriel … all well past it. I think if they want to make music, great, but performing as they were is now trying too hard.
Interesting who is opting out of a return. Donald Fagen seems to be retired. Paddy mcAloon. Kate Bush. Siouxsie. All artists who seem to have good insight into themselves.
Gabriel was excellent when I saw him 2 years ago, his voice is still very decent and his last album was fine (took him 20 years though)
I saw that tour as well. I genuinely recall next to nothing about the gigs
or music played. Yet I recall every minute of gigs I saw by him in the early 80s. Jack spratt ….
Jack Spratt? That seems a little mean spirited about his current physique. And surely you mean Mrs Spratt, anyway……
(;-))
Most of the audience , too: Ozempic/ wegovy had yet to hit…
I was never much of a fan of his music – Uptown Girl is an aural emetic – but Billy Joel got it right: he felt that he’d said all he needed to say on record and would just play live. He’s ruined it by doing a new single since, but he hasn’t done an album since 2001.
I suppose Macca is an obvious one. He’s my all time hero, but he insists on singing all his hits in the original key (presumably because he’s very familiar with the bass fingerings) and the end result is brutal. And, sadly, painful.
I know, Macca’s voice gets progressively weaker on each tour but he seems happy being out there, so fair play.

Frankie Valli was playing a few weeks back. He’s 90 and looked pretty frail.
And he mimes
Not quite the ‘force his songs’ require?
Please yourselves.
Very good!
It took me a while, but once I’d got it …
