Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but Forks used to post here under the username Fauxgeordie.
He was a regular until about a decade ago, and he was lovely, interesting bloke who was quite active on the political threads and used to post a lot about the rich, specifically with a “they HATE you and want you to DIE” vibe, for which he took some (usually) gentle joshing.
I take it that this is his way of saying he was right about the rich.
He was entertaining, although I’m not sure that was exactly his intention. As far as I remember, he became more and more exasperated about his fellow bloggers perceived apathy and berated us for not becoming fully and actively involved with campaigns, marches and all the rest of it. At the same time, too modest to talk about his own political engagement– you could almost think that it amounted to nothing more than furious typing on a pop music website.
I am forever grateful to Forks for revealing that rich and powerful people tend to be driven by self-interest, and if left unchecked, this will lead to Bad Consequences. He mentioned this quite a lot, as I recall, but I don’t remember him ever suggesting what we should do about it.
Faux Geordie is one of the greats, in my view – a splendid fellow! I know some around here found his leftie-ness a bit wearying but, well, he was right about the world being full of capitalist b*******ds, wasn’t he?
Hasn’t the wealth gap increased massively in the last decade? Also, I don’t see much in the way of philanthropy and while the Victorian era produced its fair share of capitalist bastards, they did at least leave some libraries behind.
It’s obviously obscene for people to have billions of dollars when others are homeless. I would say 50 million or so should be enough for anybody to get by on. At least Bill Gates (and his ex wife) seem to be using some of their riches for philanthropic purposes. Not sure what people like Musk and Bezos have planned.
I miss Forks. He was passionate about things that mattered. You don’t have to agree to appreciate that. He always had a point and is one of of the genuine ones who care.
With a couple of exceptions, when it comes to politics I’ve always found the AW to be largely centrist and conservative. His was an attractively different voice here.
I’ve heard him tell his “my mother’s advice was: read, read, read then do the right thing” anecdote a few times now. He wheels it out even more often than his dad dying in the war anecdote. I don’t think he remembers each time that he told it previously. The most ridiculous and embarrassing occasion was to the UN General Assembly, advising all the international ambassadors there that they should read a bit.
It’s a good bit of advice though. Along with the Bill Nighy nugget of “It’s nice to be important but it’s important to be nice”, these are good rules to be reminded* of.
* I am lucky as a non believer in the Floyd that I rarely, if ever, hear any pronouncments by or from Mr Waters.
You’re lucky to miss out on his frequent pronouncements – while I firmly agree with many of his political views, I’m not so enamoured of his swivel-eyed loon presentation of them.
Of course, you’re not so lucky to miss out on the best band ever in the history of everything though.
I don’t know about you but I can generally tell from the OP if any thread is going to be something I want to engage with. If not then I don’t bother scrolling through the responses.
This is true, Triggersqueezer, but it’s tricky. It took me 24 hours to realise I should have stayed well away from the ‘trolling by proxy’ in the OP here. I never learn.
Sorry, @chiz but no idea what “trolling by proxy” means in this context. Fauxboy was in turn brilliant and infuriatingly silly in the same post. I, for one, miss him even if 78.67% of the time he was Wrong.
He was the original Fauxstone of Wrongness, it’s true. I was thinking this OP is kind of like knocking on people’s doors and running away, except you get your mate to do it.
This guy used to be a successful city trader but became disillusioned and gave it all up (and I’m sure he’s in a comfortable enough position to be able to complain). It’s 30 minutes long and a bit dry (and he has a habit of saying “as he predicted” a lot), but he does make some good points about the real issue being wealth inequality. The scary thing is though is that his point that this wealth inequality will lead to people supporting the far right (I.e.the Trumps/Farage’s) who we all know will make the inequality worse…….
One thing I learned from those endless frustrating threads with Faux was, don’t engage with people who only bring blindingly obvious problems and three-word slogans to the debate. If they can’t work towards a compromise solution, move on. I wish I’d realised this sooner.
If that person turns up years later with an I Told You So, well, I guess we just have to congratulate them on their victory.
As Capitalism eats itself, the rich get richer and the world is lurching steadily rightwards, Faux’ predictions are indeed coming true. (Not that Faux by any means stands alone). Whilst his rage often got in the way of “What are you actually proposing we do?” a deal of what he shouted was passionately argued sense. I’m far from sure apart from lining all the bastards up against the wall and shooting them, he knew what we all can do to get the world back to some sort of liberal, we’re all in this together state but at least he didn’t just sit back and pretend none of this is happening.
I find that here is generally a more pleasant and mature arena for political discussion than social media because, unlike on social media, most AWers are usually more interested in examining the issue rather than attacking the commentator.
Exciting, isn’t it? I wonder how many of the half a million people who paid into Corbyn’s “sexist boys’ club'” grift are now wishing they’d held on to their cash for a couple of months
It’s all so Judean-People’s-Front typical of the Left – facing the openest of open goals, it is already split between a party with no name and no policies (which has already split within itself) and The Broad Church of Woo Woo. I do like Polanski though.
I read yesterday that Jeremy Clarkson has been slagging Polanski for his physical appearance (specifically his teeth). Clarkson of all people! Has he never looked in a mirror???
Clarkson is, potentially, a walking, talking disctionary definition of a hypocrite though. His Hawkstone microbrewery lager (which, expensively, tastes just like lager) is apparently made by Tennant’s in Glasgow.
I suspect Clarkson would disagree with much of what Polanski says/stands for but is concerned of the impact on his reputation. So he just takes the piss out of his teeth like any other ten a penny bully would do.
It mentions in the article about the managing director Owen Jenkins having worked for C&C group.
Meanwhile, Clarkson and his fellow directors — including managing director Owen Jenkins and chairman Hugh van Cutsem — are pushing forward with plans for national and international expansion.
Clarkson envisions Hawkstone in “200,000 pubs, from the Pacific Northwest to Brisbane.” Though tongue-in-cheek, the ambition is serious. Elon Musk was recently seen sipping Hawkstone on a yacht in France, adding celebrity cachet to the brand’s international profile.
Jenkins, formerly with C&C Group (owners of Magners and Tennent’s), says Hawkstone is targeting a gap in the market. “There’s no true premium British lager dominating the market,” he said. “That’s what we’re aiming to be.”
It is brewed in Glasgow – but it isn’t unusual for a regional producer to partner with a national production and distribution facility to meet demand. No one thinks Hovis is baked at the bottom of a cobbled street in Yorkshire, do they?
I think people mostly know that Moretti, Peroni, San Miguel and Madri are not brewed abroad. Many know that Madri is a pretend spanish beer. Many people don’t buy it for that reason (and I know many do).
Clarkson seems to have a genuine interest in his local area in the Cotswolds. That is a part of his personal brand now. My point about Clarkson being a hypocrite (taking the piss out of someones appearence whilst not exactly being Timothee Chalomet himself) is also bourne out by the fact that he has moved production of the local brewery he took over to one of the biggest beer factories in the UK.
I am less bothered about it than all that text suggests – I just don’t buy it (my lager of choice is Budvar which is still brewed in Prague – or the ones I buy from Costco are at least).
Peroni is primarily brewed in Italy (and a bit in the Netherlands). In Rome and Bari. I’ve been to the brewery in Bari a few times. I think the Nastro Azzurro spin-off is brewed in Britain as well as Italy.
Why isn’t Ichnusa known outside of Sardinia, I wonder? I don’t drink it, but I really like its anti-littering adverts (see above). Pity they don’t work at all. As a litter-picker, their bottles and cans are my most frequent finds.
A quick check shows that it’s nine years since he posted. 2016 – the year of the EU referendum, David Cameron handing over to Theresa May, and David Bowie’s death. Say what you like about FauxGeordie, but he certainly made an impact on this site.
I have been around these parts since the beginning (albeit like Twang with some periods of absence), but I have to say I have no memory of this character.
Let me guess. The BBC has been privatised? The NHS! Both?
🙄
Did you somehow miss the link?
Please send massive love to Forks and tell him that we miss him.
And also thank him for the anti-billionaire message delivered via Instagram. 😉
We do indeed. But I don’t do Instagram, so have no clue what the message was.
I don’t either – you should be able to see the message even without an account.
I saw the message, but I don’t really understand the point here. Can somebody explain? Or, maybe not.
Yes, but why is it an “I told you so” thing? I’m probably just being thick.
Memory failure. Who was Forks again?
*Slaps head*
Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but Forks used to post here under the username Fauxgeordie.

I just think the nickname Forks is superb. I think it was one of Burt Kocain / H.P Saucecraft’s.
I don’t think Forks came back here when the site reappeared after the Great Drupal Outage and the Facebook Hiatus.
Facebook Hiatus – TMFTL.
Yes he was quite aggressive if you dared disagree with him. And events show everything he forecasted failed to happen.
I am forever grateful to Forks for revealing that rich and powerful people tend to be driven by self-interest, and if left unchecked, this will lead to Bad Consequences. He mentioned this quite a lot, as I recall, but I don’t remember him ever suggesting what we should do about it.
I rather think Laughing Len said it best….
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it gauxs
And everybody knauxs
Snorts tea 😊
Never a wrong time for this, it seems
Faux Geordie is one of the greats, in my view – a splendid fellow! I know some around here found his leftie-ness a bit wearying but, well, he was right about the world being full of capitalist b*******ds, wasn’t he?
Come on Colin, here is a golden opportunity to impersonate him again!
😉

Ah, it’s all becoming clear.
Marvellous.
👏👏👏👏👏
🙂
Wow. Billionaires don’t share their wealth among us because they are selfish? If they did the would would be a better place?
I’m sure that had not occurred to any of us, the scales have verily fallen from mine eyes etc 🙄
And that’s our fault, is it?
Hasn’t the wealth gap increased massively in the last decade? Also, I don’t see much in the way of philanthropy and while the Victorian era produced its fair share of capitalist bastards, they did at least leave some libraries behind.

Bunkers.
Probably
Message from Nigel to Forks: “I’ve put up your post and, if you come back and see, we are all a much friendlier, kindly bunch these days”
Oops……
I miss Forks. He was passionate about things that mattered. You don’t have to agree to appreciate that. He always had a point and is one of of the genuine ones who care.
With a couple of exceptions, when it comes to politics I’ve always found the AW to be largely centrist and conservative. His was an attractively different voice here.
Yes, agreed.
yeah, I miss him too.
One can care without telling everyone just how much you care all the time, though.
I think that’s a tricky expectation on a written forum.
I found it tiresome to see it so often. Yes, we get it. Never saw a solution offered.
I feel exactly the same way about Roger Waters. Endless posts. No solution offered. Although I can offer the one I employ. Read something else.

Of course, you’re not so lucky to miss out on the best band ever in the history of everything though.
I always suspected with ‘ver Floyd that, had I had any appetite for relaxationary drugs, I may have got them more.
I’m in no position to dispute that.
For a minute, I thought you were going to offer to get rid of him.
Same here!
I have plenty of spare gloves and know the location of a good incinerator, if he needs them.
No need for an incinerator, there’s plenty of room on the marshes.
How do you know not to read it until you’ve read it?
I don’t know about you but I can generally tell from the OP if any thread is going to be something I want to engage with. If not then I don’t bother scrolling through the responses.

I’m more of garotte afficionado tbh.
Death by French folk dancing, eh? Even Poirot himself would be stumped.
I like a wide legged trouser as well.
Sorry, @chiz but no idea what “trolling by proxy” means in this context. Fauxboy was in turn brilliant and infuriatingly silly in the same post. I, for one, miss him even if 78.67% of the time he was Wrong.

Hey, nothing to fall out about, it’s only rock n roll after all.
He sent a kind message on LinkedIn a short while ago. I rarely use that anymore so was very happy and surprised to see the notification pop up.
He’s much the same. A lovely, deeply caring person.
This is worth a watch….
This guy used to be a successful city trader but became disillusioned and gave it all up (and I’m sure he’s in a comfortable enough position to be able to complain). His book is well worth a read too.
Funny you should say that 🙂
It is a good listen also.
Miss those halcyon days of Ian & Geordie clashing swords – ah well, back to reviewing “Rush – The Early Years Volume 4”.
I miss those days too. Pre-2016 when people still believed that discussing politics online could be fun and in any way, shape or form productive.
Nowadays people seem to just stay quiet outside their own echo chambers.
One thing I learned from those endless frustrating threads with Faux was, don’t engage with people who only bring blindingly obvious problems and three-word slogans to the debate. If they can’t work towards a compromise solution, move on. I wish I’d realised this sooner.

How would you know, you deaf old git???
“Old”??? I believe, at 63, I’m somewhere between half and three-quarters your age.
Was it pleasant back then? Peoples’ memories seem a bit lacking regarding conflicts and falling out. Now it’s nicer though.
I suspect the increased size of the gap between the left and the right has created a wider middle for us all to occupy.
Ha! Just wait till the next election. I expect that there Polanski fella’s gonna cause a right royal Corbyn-like ruckus among all us lefty types.
Exciting, isn’t it? I wonder how many of the half a million people who paid into Corbyn’s “sexist boys’ club'” grift are now wishing they’d held on to their cash for a couple of months

Obviously spelling dictionary incorrectly is pretty dumb.
Thank God for Wordle, eh?
It seems to have it’s own brewery in the Cotswolds. Is he just using Tennant’s for distribution purposes?
Imagine the uproar if people knew where Moretti, Peroni, San Miguel, Stella and Madri are brewed…
And Ichnusa. Don’t forget Ichnusa. Everybody always forgets Ichnusa.
Nope. Being brewed in Glasgow by all accounts.
It’s brewed in the Cotswolds in their own micro brewery. You can book a tour here:

Indeed not as the cobbled street was in Shaftesbury Dorset.

We all occupy our own wider middles now, too worn out to get worked up about anything.
There was plenty of unpleasantness from a handful of contributors. Not missed in the slightest.
Exactly.
Absolutely agree. One was so obnoxious I left the blog for 6 months. Didn’t flounce so no one noticed.
I thought you’d gone for milk and teabags!
A quick check shows that it’s nine years since he posted. 2016 – the year of the EU referendum, David Cameron handing over to Theresa May, and David Bowie’s death. Say what you like about FauxGeordie, but he certainly made an impact on this site.
That must be Wrong! Twas only three or four weeks ago when Faux was arguing with IanP and Saucy said something witty and Mini said she loved Tigger??
That reminds me – I was never in The Clique…. 🙁
Must be why we get on.
Someone has to, the law of averages and all.
I go away to a German island for a week, and the AW kicks off big time with a nostalgia fest. Let Niglet celebrate with a hamper.
I have been around these parts since the beginning (albeit like Twang with some periods of absence), but I have to say I have no memory of this character.
