As Mike says, he’s known for his walkabouts. During one of those I tried contacting him through the AW link but looks like he doesn’t use that much. Hope he’s fit and smutty ..
Full confession, I live in Beverley now, but am ‘ull born and bred. Have lived on Bilton Grange, Bransholme, Sutton Park, Spring Bank, Boothferry Rerd, Herlderness Rerd, Greenwood Avenue…
Tell me more. We’re staying in Beverley for a couple of days at the end of the month. Pub recommendations would be greatly appreciated (good beer being the main attraction). Any other “touristy” recommendations also gratefully received.
Nellie’s is the famous example, it’s actually called The White Horse and is near the bus station. Very atmospheric but the beer’s not much cop. Other pubs/bars with better beer would be the Corner House, Woolpack, Monk’s Walk (near the Minster), Sun Inn (in the shadow of said Minster, they often have live music on), The Tiger. I’ll put in a word for my mates who have recently opened a bottle shop/upstairs bar with the USP of everything on sale being sourced from the North of England, Scotland and upwards to the Nordic countries. The shop is called Northmen Spirit and the bar is Bar Seven93 (me neither). I know they’ve put so much energy and thought into the concept, and I’m sure they’d appreciate a visit (I’m not on commission, btw!).
Attractions would inevitably include a visit to either or both of our magnificent central churches, the Minster and St Mary’s. North Bar is of historical interest,

North Bar is of historical interest, there is the Georgian Quarter for posh shopping, the Westwood and Racecourse for cows and fillies, and arts-wise there are the Art Gallery above the Library and the East Riding Theatre which is a great little thriving hub of music and drama. There is also the relatively new Flemingate development, which combines retail, dining and a cinema. It’s not a mall, just a gathering of different businesses in a designated development.
Hopefully some of this will pique your interest.
Nellies was our go to weekend place when I was at Hull University in the late 70’s when it was unspoilt. IIRC it still had the original gas lamps and was just few tiny rooms.
I went back years later and the front looked the same but the back had been extended and of course all the really old charm had been lost.
When I was at Hull (from 75 to 78) the place was still ran by the two old sisters and you could still get hand-pulled Theakstons old Peculier from the cask – something of a novelty as CAMRA was far from the force it eventually became
Probably never. That’s the way of places like this. This is a virtual pub (the Aspidistra and Hatstand) and if someone stops coming in for a bit, they will have their reasons.
Reminds me of an absolutely brilliant joke, superbly told by Clement Freud. When I’m not late for work (as I am now) I will post it.
I once saw a fully kitted out emergency vehicle emblazoned with the words “Bolton Mountain Rescue”. I’ll share the pic I took once I’ve finished laughing*.

He goes AWOL occasionally, don’t know why.

As I remember last time he disappeared for a while it was down to IT issues. Hopefully we’ll see him back soon.

Hope he’s alright. I often seem to end up his, er, “straight man”. For gags, like. Just so that’s clear.

Perhaps he’s disappeared up his own double entendre?
