    Pica is a mental health condition where a person compulsively swallows non-food items. It’s especially common in children and with certain conditions. While it’s often harmless, swallowing certain items can make pica very hazardous.

    I wonder if any AWers suffer from pica?

    PS. Hey look, I’m back at the top of the thread again! That’s nice. Reminds me a bit of when I visited Chichén Itzá.

    As well as a name (the ILTLH, for example) Tina is apparently an acronym for “there is no alternative” and a slang term for crystal meth. Not quite sure which plural I deftly discovered.

    I love it when it’s possible to add an S either to the end or the beginning of the starter word. Such days make my life considerably more exciting.

    • Just replying to your comment about my twins here because the Stop Making Sense thread is not working very well for me….

      They are boy/girl and different in every way. They do get on with each other though, which is good.

        • I also had twin older brothers – by which I mean two of my older brothers are twins. One of them died last year.

          I had always considered the two of them to be completely different…but at the funeral, the friends and work colleagues said that the surviving twin was so incredibly similar , with his mannerisms and the way he stood and the way he talked. I can’t see that at all, but they did.

    A burg (plural: burgs) is, of course, a walled city or fort. Intellectual people will already know that, but what they might not know is that the walled city or fort of Hamburg has nothing to do with “ham” (indeed, many of its residents are vegetarian). Its original name was Hammaburg, as coined by Emperor Charlemagne ages ago. “Hamma” is Usbekian for “everyone”. What the Usbekians were doing in Germany back then, or even if they actually went there at all, no one really knows.

    • But @gary, there’s lots of “hams” all over the place. Chesham, Fulham and lots and lots more. I would say these were hamlets at some point so it might be that Hamburg means “Hamlet City” cos it’s basically lots of hamlets.

          • No, pay attention Hubes. Back in the old days it was just called Burg which means, as Gary rightly says, a walled city or fort. Except it was actually a gated settlement. They couldn’t call it Gatesburg because people’s letters would be redirected to a very similar address in America.

            Even in those days the inhabitants considered themselves a cut above the oiks, so they would ensure very few people were allowed in. For centuries they held lengthy and expensive comedy festivals and tattooed themselves silly – and variations on these traditions still exist today. The laughter piqued the curiosity of so many travellers, particularly the dour ones from the north of Scotland who had never heard of any form of jollity. They would poke their heads through the iron fences to see what was happening, only to find themselves stuck fast. As night fell, the cold temperatures would effectively weld the hapless traveller to the iron, and that’s where they would perish. But more often than not, with a smile on their face.
