Following my appreciation of a current (to me but prehistoric to my daughters) top pop smasheroonie I felt we could widen this out to an appreciation of all things apologetic. It’ll be all contrite on the night perhaps…
An 80’s Caledoni-pop cult classic to begin from me.
or, this one
indeed.
continuing the 80’s vibe, as I’m often wont to do…

A high point
Wonderful, wonderful song- their best.
‘brushed with oil, dusted with powder’ runs it close
You guys should listen to White Bread Black Beer. It’s their best set by a mile.
Yeah I have been told this many times about ‘White Bread Black Beer’ and never got round it, for no good reason. Added to the list, ta.
Yes, it’s great for sure. I like all their albums for different reasons, from the super-polished synth funk to the relative stripped down WBBB tracks. One constant is the voice. If you’ve ever seen him live, you’ll know that Green still has the silky sweet voice you hear on the records
or for something a bit more up to date –
but if it’s eighties vibe ye want – the rotating ‘TITS’ only adds to the enjoyment
No apologies for posting this particularly fine raw live performance…
and here’s an undeniable influence on the above…
I prefer this version
Brilliant. I confess I’d only heard The Faces version (the original I presume?) but that is indeed rather fine.
an A.O.R. fave of mine…
lets combine the eighties with the noughties
Sorry, I Wish Bonita Case
one of the most sorrowful songs
Now BANG up to date
“Regrets. I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention..”
Sounds like something he easily got over. Like this guy, who’s only a bit sorry, out of politeness really.
(The Coasters – Sorry But I’m Gonna Have To Pass)
He’s obviously not nearly as sorry as ol’ Elton when he sang:
“It’s sad, so sad. It’s a sad, sad situation. Sorry seems to be the hardest word..”
Now that’s sorrow by the shedload.
Sometimes…
Please Forgive Me
This may be stretching the theme a little… But it’s such a f*ckin brilliant song
(Clears throat)
So good! – I went through an anti Lennon phase – how foolish was I
He is a wizard at encapsulating complicated feelings in such a succinct way
Continuing my Maria Mckee obsession – this is fucking devastating
What a great, great album that is!
If this isn’t man enough for you, look away
Nope.
Sorry is a sorry word…so sorry in fact that there are two songs with this title:
(The Temptations)
(Tarrus Riley)
No need to apologise, lads…
And representing the Antipodes (via England, Scotland, the Netherlands etc)
I love this song:

Not as sorry as we are, Hunt.
That would be the nadir of Bowie’s career. Thankfully he isn’t on it, so it isn’t.
This probably sums up the Dame’s feelings about letting that through quality control…
Hüsker Dü – I Apologize
Not sure where this live version was filmed. It maybe that afternoon gig they did at the Camden Palace in London. Or it may be something else entirely. But it’s still prime-era Huskers, anyway.
Can I just say …. LOVE the Huskers.
Have you heard the rumours about a big Husker Du remaster / reissue set later this year? Could be an essential purchase.
I have indeed heard rumours of just such a boxed set, good Mr Dynamite, sir. I fear it’s unlikely to be cheap…
Another antipodean contribution – the converse
Here’s PSB remixing Madonna.
Funny that. I can’t imagine Madonna ever saying sorry to anyone, ever. See also Radiohead’s “I’m In Love With Everything And Life Is Beautiful”
This wormed its way into my brain when I was nine. Still slides out of its hidey hole occasionally.
sittin’ feeling, sorry in the Thirsty Dog
Loudon does a good line in guilt, real and disingenuous
brilliant
This is my favourite LW3 set of live songs though. Perfect.

Allison Moorer to her son:
It’s devastating live
Even more devastating if you are Steve Earle
Second appearance from REM in this thread: The Apologist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT_VxOn6AoQ
First I’ll go for Stacey Earle and Did I Say I’m Sorry?
and then Marianne Faithfull performing Guilt
My thread, my rules. Related themes of regret, guilt and forgiveness are allowed. Anyway this is still an extraordinary song for a 17 year old to have written (or two as apparently Andrew was genuinely involved)
Here’s a tune and a half, with epic production by Jam & Lewis…
https://youtu.be/7pGORnxcLuU
I have brought this up before, but Take That’s song Back for Good was rightly a very successful song – a tremendous tune sung well. To the casual listener, it’s a heartfelt apology – “I didn’t mean it…” is repeated several times in a vulnerable-sounding way.
The reason why I highlight this here is that while it has all the trappings of a tender, humble mea culpa – buried in the lyric is a qualified apology because the writer himself actually isn’t sorry. He just wants things back to how they were.
“whatever I did, whatever I said, I didn’t mean it…”
“Whenever I’m wrong, just tell me the song and I will sing it
You’ll be right and understood.”
See what he did there? He isn’t addressing or acknowledging the problems – he is offering a broad-brush statement of regret to get to what he wants. A truly sorry person would acknowledge the specific things he did and the specific things he said – and apologise.
“In the twist of separation, you excelled at being free”
This is a very judgemental statement – he was still watching, noting what she was doing and who with. But that’s OK, despite this, he still wants her back. Isn’t she lucky?
After pretending to assess the situation objectively, he concludes:
“I guess…it’s time…you came back for good.”
i.e. Enough of this nonsense now. Those dishes aren’t going to wash themselves.
Just shows what an evil fucker Barlow really is.
Interesting analysis there Black Celebration. I’d never really considered it in that way before but you could be on to something. Maybe Gary wrote it as a sorry-not-sorry song in the style of LW3’s Mr. Guilty and it has nevertheless gained popularity for a completely different meaning, such as, off the top of my head, Every Breath You Take, (This One Goes Out To) The One I Love or Easy (Like Sunday Morning)…
Listened to this in the car today…(maybe) I’m amazed it’s not already been posted.
