Laura Nyro wrote And When I Die when she was 17. It was a big hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1969. Despite the downbeat title for one so young, the song carries an upbeat message.

But shirley you remember that was the way in those days. You didn’t put your singles on the album because it was thought you were asking your fans to shell out twice. Viz. Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane as the p […]

Remember The Golden Hour? The first hour of Simon Bates’ morning show, where you had to guess the year all the records were made?
During a period of working from home in the 1980s, at an old farmhouse in the […]

The truism about how a band is only as good as its drummer is absolutely true in the case of DP. In the roll-call of great rock drummers, Ian Paice deserves to be right up there. A phenomenal player who drove the […]

What a musical education, Mousey. I’m a proud owner of your CD, bought when @mikethep and I came to see you play in Auckland, whenever that was.

Something in the water in ’92? My dad died on December 8th that year. Not likely to forget that date, given its significance to folk like us. My mum’s still here, like Tig’s living in a maisonette, happily […]

Russ Conway too. As a nipper, Sidesaddle was always on our little portable record player with the speaker in the lid. My mum liked Johnny Mathis too. Helen Shapiro, Nat King Cole (Let There Be Love), Ray Charles […]

My parents were disciples of the man they called ‘Hansi’.
James Last, for it was he, provided the soundtrack of our weekends at home. Once in a while, I would find my parents preparing for a night out at the […]

Ain’t it just. I like this clip because they’re live in the studio and it epitomises that T. Rex strut.

I’ve dug out In Person At The Blackhawk. What about those sleeve notes? Old Ralph knew how to spin a yarn for a couple of thousand words to take the listener down into the club.

I’d not heard End of the Game until just now. Just awful, but the youtube thread contained this, from 1971. Equally sad in many respects, but there’s a faint glimmer of the old PG.

Yes, not listened to it for a while. From memory, the highlight – and the most Dan-like track – was Drowning In A Sea Of Love.
