Stolen from the Hoffman forum. A nice way to display your favourite 25 albums (or whatever) in one picture. If you take part I just request 25 different artists and no explanations.
Instructions:
Go to Topsters 3 and select “Add Items” and then “Music”
https://topsters.org/
Search for your artist/album or both and drag and drop onto the table on the right
You’ll likely find duplicate covers, some with text reflecting a remaster or edition – for the sake of simplicity, ignore anything beyond artist/album in the text field to the right.
When finished, click “Download” in the upper right of the page and save the result to your computer.
Upload to an image host of your choice – I use Imgur and embed the image in your post! (you might need to right click and “open image in new tab” to get the raw file to embed after it’s done).
I did it more “organically” a few years ago (in alphabetical order, natch):
I think that’s more than 25!
Some great choices though
I didn’t know the rules back then. Did one for books too. I was young and wild.
Ok, I’ve done it properly.
Out of respect.
Respect
Disqualified 25 different artists please 😉
But kudos for Steve McQueen – one of my outliers, and Screanadelica – an album that really deserves its classic status.
Oh blimey, I’m not very good at this game.
Perhaps I should try Wordle.
Never do that, promise me!
Oops
That was interesting and fun. Here’s my 25 desert island albums (for today anyway). I’ll have a scan through the other posts a bit later
16 Lovers Lane. Fab album. Amanda, sigh…
Have a listen to the latest Known Pleasures podcast, there’s an interview with Amanda Brown and Lindy Morrison
Ta!
In chronological order. Neat.
Roughly
Will probably be an entirely different 25 tomorrow.
Nice. Few of those close to making my list
That Cowboy Junkies album – it’s in the spread of albums between ‘At the End of Paths Taken’ and “All that Reckoning” that I have never heard. There are so many good albums by them (I would have picked ‘The Caution Horses’ if I had more than 25 to choose, as my introduction to them). Can you ‘sell’ it as being the best album? I love hearing people heap praise on my favourite artists.
Sing in my Meadow was one of four albums in the Nomad Series. I wouldn’t say it’s the CJ’s best, but it’s certainly their grungiest and for that reason probably their least representative. It’s one I keep going back to, and all of the Nomad albums are worth listening to.
Well, that was good fun! Started with favourite albums, ended up with some favourite covers thrown in as well! Thanks for the link, @dai!
Disqualified 25 different artists please 😉
AAAARRRRGGGHHH!
(give me a minute or two…)
Nice to see “Cool Struttin'” there.
And Quiet Sun’s “Mainstream”.
Get a fat question mark for “Orange Juice You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever”. Is this site wearing its ignorance with pride?
Also, no King Crimson of any description…
Yes I too noticed the complete KC void.
Couldn’t find Was (Not Was)’s debut album either.
Indeed. Here’s what they say …
Why can’t I find any King Crimson albums?
Not everything in the databases has cover art attached. Because charts require cover art, Topsters 3 filters out items that are missing it. For example, occasionally a band decides they don’t want their cover art to appear in databases anymore, so they file a copyright takedown. You may have seen this happen on other sites such as Rate Your Music. This is very rare but it can affect popular items–as of this writing, all of King Crimson’s releases are missing album art on Last.fm and as a result will not appear in search results.
I’ve also ended up with a black square for one of my favourite (admittedly obscure) artists.
Just go to Discogs for your Crimson cover of choice and copy the image link from there: past the link in on Topsters in the ‘Custom’ section, click ‘Generate chart item’ and the website does the retrieve and lets you include it. Seeemples.
Brilliant advice, @Vulpes Vulpes.
And of course it will work too for movies, books, tv series etc,
Second time lucky – hopefully this will pass the dai test…
(note to self: always read the whole question)
Cheeky Miles Davis choice there. 😉
One of his best, IMHO…
Well done!
Got there in the end…
Gratifyingly correct Roxy selection there.
Nearly chose Country Life – but I wanted a dark cover top right, to balance Unknown Pleasures at bottom left…can’t remember why…
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/why/202010/symmetry-and-aesthetics
That is a real find, Gary! Thanks!
One album per artist, Top 10 is probably correct, all a bit arbitrary after that
(No room for Bad News or Derek & Clive Live)
“arbitrary” oh yes – have just revised the bottom 10 based on “I forgot that one – how can I convince the AW of my eclectic tastes without (insert name of album) on the list”
(then again, I couldn’t find the Transvision Vamp album in the database)
@rigid-digit Best Clash album I note…
Not just me then …
It’s clearly their best! First three songs alone would give it that accolade. I love the big fat rockist guitars and the lack of noodling
And it contains Stay Free
I saw a Clash tribute band this year doing an energetic 46th(!)(?) anniversary run through of G’EER which did give me a greater appreciation of the songs other than the obvious four ace ones abovementioned. But I’m afraid it’s still an album I feel the need to “pimp” by augmenting it with singles from the time to bring it up to snuff. Takes all sorts!
Yep, the album does not live up to the astonishing start. For me:
London Calling (peerless)
The Clash (pure energy )
Sandinista (overlong of course, but there is plenty of magic there)
Rope
Combat Rock (some great stuff, but sounds more dated than other albums)
The didn’t release any other albums, right?
And we must not forget they didn’t have any hits
Combat Rock was the US hit. But agree it’s aged worse, and it doesn’t really “feel” like The Clash.
I love the Clash, but only from London Calling – Combat Rock. But then I don’t like any form of power pop, which is what Give Em Enough Rope sounds like.
Hmm. Beefed up power pop I’d say.
Fair comment, but you acknowledge the power pop genes within it, which rules most out for me. I like Stay Free which, coincidentally or not, is a Mick Jones song, From wiki –
“Sandy Pearlman, who produced the original album, was not a big fan of Joe Strummer’s voice, to the point that he ensured the drums were mixed louder than Strummer’s vocals on the entire album.”
It does indeed. Fab song.
Old favourites
Some tasty cuts there…
My favourite Spaceman 3 album and my favourite Spiritualized album. Cool
My second favourite Spacemen 3 album, favourite ABBA album, favourite Nick Drake album, probably my favourite non-greatest hits New Order album – tasty cuts indeed.
Thanks Sal! I still treasure my vinyl copy of Perfect Prescription – that run of tracks on Side 1 is just perfection. What’s your favourite? Playing With Fire?
Perfect Prescription is awesome – I have both the album and Forged Prescriptions, the outtakes from the sessions. It is a beautiful bath of music. I would say it sways more towards the Jason Spaceman side than the Sonic Boom in its lushness. Playing With Fire has more variety, with Suicide representing the excellent guitar feedback assault of Sound of Confusion, while ‘How Does It Feel?’ is for me their acid-soaked pinnacle – peerless – all surrounded by lots of Perfect Prescription style loveliness.
Playing With Fire was my introduction – my first year at uni. I was on a journey of discovery and every day was dressed in bright sunlight.
It’s in the bottom row of my choices directly below this subthread, between SpaceMonkeyz and Systema Solar.
Top marks for Introspective
Needless to say, at least 35 didn’t make the cut, but could have done. These are albums I can listen to again and again without tiring off a single track
Nice to see somone else likes “Happy Trails”.
I love it – I’m not sure if the succeeding albums match up, though the first album is quite good. The guitar duelling I love and led me on to Neil Young’s Crazy Horse marathons and Television. So enjoyable.
Those missing albums from database, I believe they can be manually added
My ‘umble hoffering. Honourable mention for Music in a Doll’s House, not in the database.
I keep meaning to buy that Ace collection “Another Saturday Night”. Thanks for the reminder!
It occurred to me Dai might disqualify it because it’s a compilation, but I seem to have got away with it so far. Phew.
I will allow it.
Quite a few of my collection there @mikethep ! I dug out Spooky Two just a little while ago and was a big favourite with my chums and myself when it came out! Similarly with Lyle Lovett – I’d forgotten how good it was and played it several times!
Couldn’t find 3 of my choices and had to make substitutions.
Could be a few differences tomorrow or any day after.
Yeah, I dunno how to do it. But it’s here: https://ibb.co/dgxS2c2
Just what came to mind. I’m already thinking wot no Bjork. Wot no Radiohead. etc.
Hope this helps
I’ll play…..
With the usual provisos – this is off the top of mu head at this point of time and will likely be different tomorrow and there will be two or three albums that I think of the moment I post, that most definitely should have been on the list.
and the three missing that immediately came to mind – Kirsty MacColl / Kite, REM / Automatic For The People & Tom Petty / Wildflowers.
But I can’t decide which they would replace in the initial 25, so I guess it stands.
Ok I’ve had a go. I’m sure I’ve forgotten something/someone….
Shame you can’t delete entries as you go along. (Or can you?)
You can. I found it a bit flaky but click on the relevant album and either press – or move it out with your mouse
Ah, yes, so you can – you just drag it out.
Let him take his time if he wants to.
AMC thumbs up.
Don’t know why that album’s not on everyone’s list too.
I too love that live Flying Burritto Bros album – cracking versions of the familiar songs!
THE definitive 6 Days On The Road.
I think we’ve broken it – the ‘Download’ button just gives me ‘loading…’ ad infinitum.
So here’s my contribution, via the snipping tool and imgur:
yes that was how I did it in the end, for the same reason. Bob the only one in common though
Erm … OK … let’s see if this will work ..
oooh yes, Chapter 3. Shoulda had that.
I think we had that little gem on the turntable for about 3 weeks non-stop at one point, back in the time-stretches-out-infinitely-in-a-lovely-hazy-fashion-when-you-are-properly-zonked days.
That was fun.
So many superb albums I could have selected that are featured above.
Great idea for a thread.
Good fun. Shame it wasn’t 50.
You could do another 25. Nobody is stopping you. The idea, which just occurred to me, is tempting. 2nd rate sometimes is more interesting. Not every song is outstanding, like the first 25, but some of them are so great that they deserve their moment in a 5×5 square.
It’s lovely seeing all the album covers lined up next to each other. I know you can’t judge a book by its convert, but a record, well… I think the spirit that infuses the recording, at its best, flows out in a synaesthetic way onto the frontispiece.
Almost as soon as I posted my immediate thoughts were dash it I forgot to include this or that. I bet everyone has thought much the same. I will show restraint though. To do otherwise kinda blows the concept.
Sparklehorse! Good man.
That was far more fun than I expected
Here are 25 albums I like. Yesterday it would have been 25 different albums. Tomorrow 25 more.
You could do all sorts of fun things with this tool Great find! Thanks Dai!
25 favourite soundtrack albums
25 party albums. ‘
25 instrumental albums
25 unjustly neglected albums
25 Albanian jazz albums
etc
Np. I think you are in the lead for most obscure choices!
Obscure? Moi?? What a thought!
My choices have all sold in very large numbers so they are pretty mainstream
But for this list, I confess, I did deliberately avoid any artists who sang in English. Just to redress the balance.
I’ve seen 19 of my 25 faves live in concert.
How do you post the result here?
imgur as explained in the original post. Same way most post photos here
Ah. The upload is the bit I can’t do.
Post the link and I can Imgur it for you
What link?
Oops. I had assumed that topster make a unique url when you create your 25. I was wrong.
I’ve worked out a way – PM me your list, and I can do it for you
Screen shot as wouldn’t download. See how it looks. I think these covers are familiar to all. Nothing obscure. Not the best quality image but hey ho.
I normally just lurk here, but I couldn’t resist this
Thanks Dai
Me too.
Diesel Park West! Nice choice @peanuts-molloy
The recent Steve Winwood live album is terrific!
Ah, Bonnie! Yes, she should have been in my set.
More fun – you can do singles & EPs as well. Here’s one for deramdaze:
Nice!
Excellent work @Peanuts Molloy.
Lots of interesting artwork.
Lou very nearly made mine, wasn’t sure if V.U. and Lou Reed are separate artists though. Same applies to Beatles solo albums. I nearly put all Things Must Pass in. None of Mick Jagger’s solo albums were considered …
Another vote for 16 Lovers Lane!
The Band’s eponymous album is popular
Got the download of doom so here’s a screenshot.
Pirates Choice scraped my collage, edged out by a nanometre.
Rutles and no Beatles – controversial!
The joy of standing watching the Rutles and singing along with their songs is a wonderful experience.
I wouldn’t say I was being controversial choosing the Rutles over the Beatles.
With thanks to @salwarpe, without whom…
The Original Memphis recordings … top choice
(even if it proves I’m not alone in believing it be prime Primal Scream that should’ve been (before Alan McGee decided it wasn’t right and let George Drakoulias got his mitts on it))
No Bowie. That’s a surprise.
Take another look
But no GOAT!
Yep missed that.
Mostly monochromatic too.
That was the delightful gradual revelation as I posted the pics for Tig. I have great admiration for the recognition of great album art. Until Tig’s post, it was ‘Happy Trails’ and ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’ covers that stand out as the most beautiful. Though I am liking the blues in the albums chosen by @Graculus.
I felt like taking that theme for a walk
Ooh clever!
That was fun @Salwarpe.
Going for colours and shapes rather than the content opens all kinds of doors.
I’m itching to try something similar on the 25 films thread.
Here you go.
Too another look and now The Juice are there. Ten minutes of fun making my box. Then, 90 minutes of agony trying to make it work on my phone. Now, it looks like I might make it work on my computer…?
*Edith* Yes! Yes, it will..
We are pretty similar, Dusty probably made 26 on my list and Pet Shop Boys 27
After careful consideration –
Recent-ish Jazz Selection.
I’ve got The Old Country on order – looks like I’ll enjoy it then.
Nice one, @Mike_H..
Great to see someone doing a musical 25 which wasn’t just favourite albums.
Here’s a playlist to enable us all to dip into @Mike_H‘s latest jazz albums.
I’m looking forward to giving this a serious listen.
A classical 25…
Thanks a lot @fitterstoke!
As the snow fell and covered the streets of Bagarmossen, I’ve just been enjoying a Fitterstoke Classical Breakfast.
Here’s the playlist I made from your Classical 25:
I know it is a bit ridiculous to make a sampler of this kind for classical music but it will pique my curiosity and encourage me to explore further.
It’s a challenge to find classical albums on Spotify. I tried by looking for conductors, then composers and musicians and in the end found all but one: Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields playing Delius.
So many new names!
New discoveries! That’s what I come here for.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, @Kaisfatdad – but, although I enjoy most of the composers on my grid, I confess that some of my choices were motivated by the colour and appearance of the cover – and whether I could find what I was looking for!
For example, I would have rather chosen a Vaughan Williams symphony than a choral work – but I wouldn’t have got the nice orange/yellow cover!
Now I look at it, I see what you mean, @fitterstoke. Visually it works very well.
And there I was, trying to find exactly those recordings! How could do that to me??
Seriously, I am very pleased with the result. I like some tracks more than others but the compilation as a whole has really dragged me out of my musical comfort zone.
My fondness for Scandinavian and British music seems to have come through, in any event! I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Tubin and Rautavaara – two names which I feel should be better known: also, on the British side, Alwyn and Lloyd, both fine symphonists – but not represented as such on my grid!
If I’d known that you might do this, @Kaisfatdad, I’d have taken more care with the music and concentrated less on the covers…
…something like this, perhaps?
(…and, of course, I should have known…)
Gosh! How wonderful! My own personalised classical sampler!
That was very thoughtful of you @fitterstoke. I am very grateful.
Today is hectic so I won’t really get a chance to listen properly until Monday. But I promise to let you know which tracks I enjoy most, after I’ve given it a few listens.
This is turning into a real voyage of musical discovery.
I’ve given the @Fitterstoke Classical sampler one complete listen. It’s three and a half hours long and I found myself getting really get lost in the music.
Most of these composers are new to me. I feel like Columbus setting in the Americas!
I hope you enjoy it, @Kaisfatdad. I based it on the 25 covers (as per your own playlist), but rather than sticking with the actual recording, I kept the composer (mostly) and chose a piece that I would prefer myself. One or two composers were swapped out, where the picture had been chosen more for colour or shape than musical content. And nothing was chosen which I don’t listen to myself.
Edit: didn’t notice until later that I’d picked two pieces by Shostakovich – but they’re so different from each other that I decided not to fix it!
