I’m watching and loving it – seeing the yanks being humbled by Europe is very symbolic at this time.
It’s not like any other sporting spectacle – equal amounts psychology, physical and mental endurance and skill.
The US crowd have been a bit tasty – loved Rory’s ‘why don’t you shut the f••• up!’ before proceeding to put the ball 2 feet from the pin.
Although the fans on both sides are twats, what amuses me is how terrible the USA crowd chants are. Over here football fans have had a century to hone and evolve taunting songs to really wind up the opposition fans. What they have in the States is basically “USA, USA” (repeat to fade)
I have theory that Americas relationship with sport hides a level of insecurity. Fundamentally their major sports are substantially not played elsewhere in the world. American Football, baseball and to a lesser extent basketball (where it typically plays second fiddle in other countries). There is a fear of losing so they play in their own back yard at a city or state level. No nationally. I understand the Olympics (other than a breakout star) struggles to get real traction.
It will be interesting if in 50 years time (and I won’t be around to see it) if Football (for all it many faults) dominates.
Golf and the Ryder Cup seems to perhaps be the highest profile sport played on a national basis. And, particularly for a certain fan base, brings out the most jingoistic types. And as stated above with no century old humour (be it witty or vulgar) in the rivalry.
USA, USA, USA and in the hole, about as far as it goes.
I should add that there is no doubting America’s financial, industrial, commercial and military might. With jazz, blues, rock, soul and rap, films and TV it has been at the forefront of cultural majesty. Some of the most beautiful and spectacular landscapes anywhere.
But on a one to one sporting match up, a curious disengagement.
I’ve really enjoyed it especially Lowry and McIlroy serving the pig ignorant USA fans with brilliant shot after brilliant shot. Total hurling mentality from Lowry. Fleetwood and Rose have been phenomenal this round – not responding to de Chambeau’s roidrage and playing extraordinary golf.
There was a comment from Hovland (I think) earlier that the US crowd were so busy trying to get on the European team’s back that they’re not supporting their own players enough.
I also think the team spirit is evident with the European team where the American team look too intense. I’d expect Keegan Bradley will be in prison by the end of the week.
After Trump told the UN that European countries were a bunch of losers and they are now kicking US ass in his main passion, are we going to see the administration revoke the visas of the key Europe players before the final round ?
It’s been brilliant. I’ve been watching with the sound muted and played some records instead.
It’s incredible how well Team Europe has done in that atmosphere. Justin Rose shoo-ing Bryson’s caddy off the green and then rolling in his putt was terrific.
Maybe Trump should have played? He’s great at golf.
Rugby now has its own ‘In the hole’, it’s ‘He knocked it on, he knocked it on, he knocked it on etc. etc…’
Might have a word next time I hear that, it’s even spread beyond the home counties.
Redruth, for God’s sake!
At netball it’s “rebound!” – as a player steadies themselves to shoot. The spectator is alerting the team to the fact that the ball might not go in – and for the others to be ready if it rebounds back off the rim. Hardly a vote of confidence in the shooter.
Amazing day, I almost stopped watching, but held on to see Lowry hole his putt for 14 points then happy to see they got to 15 in the end US nearly always dominates. the singles and I expected a comeback but this was close to something incredible. Phew
Yes, an incredible finish.
By the end, Tommy Fleetwood was hollow-eyed with stress and exhaustion. And no wonder. His performances on the first two days had been nothing short of heroic.
Same applies to McIlroy, Rahm and, to a degree, Rose. It has always generally been the case with Europe that the very top players need to play in every session and after 72 holes in 2 days they are exhausted when it comes to the singles (Rose didn’t play 72 but he’s fairly old). Was something of a factor here too. Scheffler won after 4 defeats, but the standard of golf in that game was not particularly high relatively
I’ve found the furore around the last couple of days gripping without watching feeling any desire to watch a single stroke (hit? club? whatever it’s called when a golfer hits a ball) of the competition.
Also Solheim Cup (women’s equivalent). Before it became Europe it was Great Britain and Ireland. They get together for the Lions in rugby but anything else?
Glad Europe won, who wouldn’t be, even right-thinking Americans, but I’m with the great Tom Watson who rightly declared he was embarrassed by the host nation.
With you on that. Bloody hate the sport but always keep an eye out for the Ryder Cup, simply because the American golfers and their fans are always such a graceless bunch of cockends and it’s a genuine pleasure to see them lose. And boy, they really outdid themselves this year.
Any golf fans in USA? Seemingly not.

The fans at the Ryder cup represent everything I dislike about golf. And I play the game.
Agreed. I love the Ryder cup but the crowds (well, the US crowds) make it pretty much unwatchable for me.
But mind you, I could watch “Fleetwood Mac” play all day ⛳. Tommy Fleetwood today has been unbelievably good.

It’s close to “Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oy Oy Oy” in its banality
Not in the slightest, though when I may have bought an essential bit of musical kit I say to Mrs. T, “just think, it could have been golf”.

Brilliant final hole by Hatton and Fitzpatrick.
I generally don’t favour violence, but I’d happily taser the goolies of every twat that shouts “get in the hole”.
I’m not a fan.

And this Ryder cup – do the winners get a set of Happy Mondays albums as the prize ?
They each get a 60-second trolley dash around a local charity shop
It’s fantastic! Still need 3 points mind. This is assuming Trump doesn’t deport the lot of them before the singles matches.
The US “fans” are a bunch of drunken, boorish, ignorant assholes (well some of them anyway)
Last night Nick Faldo referred to the competition as “the pro-am Ryder Cup”. Lol.
Why is Tommy Fleetwood every woman’s* favorite golfer?
Because he’s rich and he always comes second+
* well almost
+ until very, very recently

Don’t forget that the defence can have a role in making the shooter miss. Says the father of a GD/GK…
My daughter is also GD/GK and loves it.
Getting a bit nervous – the European bubble has deflated a little and suddenly the Americans are puffing their chests out!
Golf…bloody hell
But hold on… I thought Donald Trump’s America was blah blah blah.
Hate the Ryder Cup, glad it’s over. Great result.
Tell you what, Fromage won’t be happy.
That was some sustained tension, and great to watch.
Delighted for Lowry! He really upped his game for the last stretch of holes to get back into it.
Not a golf fan, but this weekend I enjoyed cheering on the Brisbane Lions as they absolutely crushed the Cats! 😀

I know nothing about golf and generally align with the Mark Twain quote. But I like to think that I do know something about manners.
I’ve found the furore around the last couple of days gripping without watching feeling any desire to watch a single stroke (hit? club? whatever it’s called when a golfer hits a ball) of the competition.
Q: Why did the Scots invent the game of golf?
A: Because inventing the bagpipes just wasn’t annoying enough.
Golf is completely ludicrous, all this fuss about getting a ball in a hole.
But all sports are basically. Kicking a pig’s bladder around a field and trying to get it between 2 posts 8 yards apart. Ludicrous!
Excellent. Thanks, Sal.
Is it the only sporting event where Europe presents itself as a team?
Also Solheim Cup (women’s equivalent). Before it became Europe it was Great Britain and Ireland. They get together for the Lions in rugby but anything else?

Didn’t watch a second of it, and I ‘do’ sport.
