Never felt the need to go down the claphing route, just inately funny and came across as a genuinely nice guy to boot. I never watched 8 out of 10 cats because I cant get past Jimmy Carr, but I saw this posted on twitter and, well….
Sean Lock was one of the few of todays comedians who I found to be consistently funny. I don`t know anything about the man privately but whenever I`ve seen him live or on TV/DVD he was brillant and a joy to watch/listen to.
They`ll be laughing away on the astral plane tonight.
I first heard that one from Arthur Smith, who claimed he read it out pretending it was the joke he found in his Christmas dinner cracker. It’s probably trad. arr. though.
Sad loss – effortlessly funny, non-starry, and a master of the absurd.
My fave SL line?
A woman’s work is never done.
That’s why they earn less
Jimmy Carr described a joke as a laugh followed by an intake of breath, and a look that says “should I be laughing at this?”
Sean delivered a few of those, and this was probably the biggest intake of breath
Very funny guy, very sad loss. I try to limit my time on Twitter but I spent a great 20 minutes on there at lunchtime today watching some clips people posted from “… Countdown”, time well spent.
What a shame. I thought he was great. He reminded me so much of a mate of mine with a similar absurd deadpan take on matters.
I never watched 8 out of 10 cats very much because the rest of the cast seemed so bland, but over lockdown I found a load of YouTube compilations of his contributions. Stunningly good.
I saw him multiple times over the years & he always cracked me up.
I think he had that element that the truly funny have – a take on things that is every so slightly off, to the point of being borderline dodgy.
For any AWers who don’t know the sitcom he did – take the time to check out ‘15 Storeys High’, which I still reckon is his finest work.
Also the best kind of Chelsea supporter. He will be missed.
Perhaps a *tad* too soon for the tacky gags?
I saw him standing in the Shed many times before his profile grew – when there was plenty of thin gruel to consume.
This is what makes latter day success (however achieved), all the sweeter.
I did see him perform, and shed a tear or two on hearing the news. I just thought it was a) a good gag, and b) entirely in keeping with SL’s edgy humour. Hey ho.
He provided my all time favourite line from QI
They were talking about children with imaginary friends and he said he never had one however…
“I hear voices… but I ignore them and carry on killing”
I’ll be honest, I hadn’t seen a lot of Sean Lock, but just watched his stand-up show on TV this evening. Brilliant. Thoughtful and withering comedy. RIP

Really sad news. A very funny man.
Awful news; one of the good guys, gone. Condolences to all who knew and loved the chap.
Very shocked when I read this. Very funny comedian, a horrible way to go. RIP
So sad, one of the very best.

Crushingly brilliant, spur-of-the-moment stuff there.
Already watched that once today, had to watch it again – still brilliant.
RIP Sean.
Those who’ve not seen SL in the criminally under-rated 15 Storeys High now no longer have an excuse not to do so.
Very natural comedian. Like a funny mate down to the pub. Didn’t seem like an ‘act’.

R.I.P. Mr Lock and thank you.
Ah man that’s a shocker. Hilarious and immensely likeable comedian. How sad, and no age.
He’s the source of my favourite joke, as it happens:
Why does Noddy wear a little hat with a bell on it?
Because he’s a cunt.

My fave too!

The way his mind played on the world was refreshingly and healthily absurd. Brilliant comedian.
There is still a stain on my sofa where I spat out food when he delivered his ‘That’s a challenging wank’ aside. Bless him.
I saw him multiple times over the years & he always cracked me up.

Wait, the best kind Chelsea supporter is a dead one? Harsh but fair I guess.
Perhaps a *tad* too soon for the tacky gags?

Nah. Be honest, he’d have appreciated it.
Yeah bit weird to see someone take offence on Sean’s behalf here. Did you not see him perform?
Was that @ me, Jim?
I did see him perform, and shed a tear or two on hearing the news. I just thought it was a) a good gag, and b) entirely in keeping with SL’s edgy humour. Hey ho.
More vintage stuff

It takes a special kind of genius to deliver a line like that.
Always the funniest man in the room regardless who else was in the room. A sad loss.

Both series of 5 Storeys just been put up on BBC iPlayer
