You beat me to it – was about to post the same video with exactly the same comment! Given how close to death’s door she was, it’s little short of miraculous.
With the deeper voice Both Sides Now reminded me of Frank Sinatra’s version.
I wonder what her voice would have been like sans 2 packs of barkers a day.
So we’re doing the finger-wagging “Don’t smoke, kids!” thing at this stage?
And no staying up late, while we’re at it! Eat yer greens! Use the box! Buy a Fiio! etc
When I saw the thread heading in the Steve Hoffman forums this morning, I though someone was having a joke. But no. What a remarkable performance.
My favourite bit is in “A Case of You” when Joni and Brandi get to the line “I could drink a case of you … and I would still be on my feet”, and the whole place goes BANANAS.
Joni also played electric guitar on one track (Just like this Train), which I never thought I’d see again…
Just watched it again. Godammit. Have to clean my glasses again.
This may be the greatest vocal performance ever recorded. It’s up there with the best of Billie Holiday for emotional restraint and impact. Phrasing? Did someone mention phrasing?
And her toothy grin and chuckle at the end. The best thing I’ve seen for a very long time.
Listened to that a few times more and conclude that my comment is incorrect at least on BSN. In defence I am still gasping and when watching her all I can see is the short breaths.
Re the phrasing , I referred to Frankie. I recall he did a concert in Oz that was broadcast on TV – his version was much slower and reflective like the version here. His studio version is much more sing song.
No, the emotional restraint is in the control of her emotion, Junes. If all you can see (let alone hear) is short breath, you are totally on the wrong wavelength.
I’m not that fond of early Joni but she has a string of mid-career albums that is as good as anything, anything, in popular music.
I guess I’m alone in thinking that the various clips from Newport make uncomfortable viewing? Yes, the lady can still sing and swing but, and here I tread lightly, it’s like visiting your lovely old Mum in the Care Home and remembering what a wonderful lady she used to be.
Apparently she has had Jam With Joni sessions with the likes of Dylan and McCartney – however wonderful these may be I for one wish she had kept Newport just as private.
I’m off to my bunker now…
Perhaps, but if your old Mum could come out with performances like that, christ on a bike, that’d be something. The phrasing, as Tiggs says, is magnificent, she clearly in full control of what little puff she has left. Magnificent. And I speak as a naysayer of most of her canon. Too shrill and pure in early times and then, frankly, bor-ing in her classic phrase. I think the first time I appreciated her was the husky but not-as-as-husky-as-this reprise of BSN from Love Actually.
(DOI: I gave Hejira another go last week. Very clever and complex/naif arrangements, but all a bit dull in the final analysis. Now that’s bunker talk, Lodey!)
Justly are ye yclept Lodestone Of Wrongness! Uncomfortable viewing? Jesus fucking Christ, Lodey! And the same to you with knobs on, Mr. Path2! Anyone who finds any of her extraordinary canon boring deserves to be locked in a damp potting shed with Mr. O’Wrongness.
Don’t give me Kate Bush, for godsake don’t give me Kate Bush!
As I say above, at her peak Joni was one of the best, if not the best.
“Uncomfortable viewing” remains my take and none other than the Right Honourable Ernie agrees. That makes me Right, no?
It was clearly a bit of a vintage year at the Newport Folk Festival.
Not only did they have the Return of Joni, they also had Rhiannon Giddens and Paul Simon duetting on “American Tune”. Good stuff…
I started to listen last night at 11:30 just as some arsehole decided to let fireworks off.
I shall try again later without the accompaniment of bangs and crashes.
That is a very illuminating piece of reporting, @Gary. Thanks! It gives a good picture of what the festival is like.
Here’s the full interview with Anthony Mason.
When you hear about what she’s been through, having to relearn how to play the guitar, for example, it is nothing short of miraculous that she made it onto that stage.
That smile on her face at managing to play again!
I can see what Lodestone is getting at. It is slightly uncomfortable watching. It would be strange if it wasn’t. But I am very glad that they brought one of these Joni Jams to Newport. The response of that audience must have meant an awful lot for Joni after all her struggles.
And I am extremely glad that it was filmed so that millions of fans can now enjoy it.
(Does that mean I escape that damp night in the potting shed with Lodestone??)
Here’s the Rolling Stone review of the whole festival.
And one more….

I prefer the one in the OP. The still captures Wyonna looking up at the sky, losing the will to live.
Lovely to see. Is that Emmy Lou to her right?
No, do you mean Wyonna Judd?
Great to see her performing, think I was there last time she did (briefly) at 70th birthday celebration at Massey Hall almost 10 years ago
My mistake, @dai
My mistake too @Max-the-Dog I was looking at the wrong person. The Emmylou lookalike is apparently her assistant
Awww Joni – excuse me, been cutting onions – *snurfle*!
Wonderful!

Think she started smoking at 9 or something so that factor was always there…
True , but it is cumulative. I was happy for her voice to transition from the Baez like trills anyway.
So we’re doing the finger-wagging “Don’t smoke, kids!” thing at this stage?

Always work! Go to church! Do right! Respect those in authority over you! Etc.
Thank the mods!
No swearies in the headings!
Don’t diss Kate Bush!
Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for posting.

This is just lovely to see. She’s the absolute greatest. The one.
I thought I’d better watch it, just of curiosity, you know – after 20 seconds I just cried, it floored me. Just beautiful.
Both Sides Now waited until this moment to be sung. Like she knew, back then.
Damn dust.
I cried too. I admit it.
Just luverly.
What a wonderful surprise. Thanks so much for posting this.
Just watched it again. Godammit. Have to clean my glasses again.

That emotional restraint is severely diminished lung capacity.
Still good but.

I did recant.

LoW – I can see why it made such an emotional impact on so many people, but personally I have to say I agree with you.
I’ll send you the keycode to my bunker ..

Don’t give me Kate Bush, for godsake don’t give me Kate Bush!

Don’t much like her either.

Very timely revival of that song.
And, how great is Rhiannon Giddens?
Who’s the old geezer next to her?
I think he was in Detectorists.
Thought it was
Amazing these legends make it over the bridge to lovely Gwent 😉
Especially as the SatNav took them to Newport Pagnell first. What larks!
Your both wrong. It actually took place in the Aldi car park of the Telford market town.
Not the village near Saffron Walden?
I started to listen last night at 11:30 just as some arsehole decided to let fireworks off.

Wow, is Joni that popular where you live?
She often pops round for coffee.
In Yorkshire they kiss on Main Street.
…and as for what they get up to in bus shelters
Shouting?
No, that’ll be Prestwich

Lots of intriguing detail. For example, The Roots played Running up that hill!
