And ‘Yes, I Have Ghosts’ is the first new song from David Gilmour in 5 years and features the voice and harp playing of his daughter Romany (it says here).
Not a huge Weller fan but I like some of his Style Council stuff. What I took from this featurette however was how annoyed I get with anyone who calls people ‘man’ or ‘dude’. Especially if they’re British and not from 1968. I cringe whenever I’m subjected to it and it often takes a superhuman effort on my part not to succumb to actual violence.
If by ‘from 1968’ you mean alive and talking at the time, Weller was 10 years old, so there’s no reason to think he didn’t hear these expressions in use frequently back then. I’m only a few years older than him, and I’ve often used these terms. Why it would drive you potty eludes me.
Oh God Mr Vulpes, please don’t use them if we should ever meet in the street. I shall naturally curb my violent instincts with a fellow Afterworder but I can’t promise that I won’t wince or clench my fist…
The new Weller sounds rather good after a couple of listens. For me thats two good albums on the bounce and he’s reined in that recent adventurous side a tad and allowed the old songcraft back in. I admire PW rather than love him and who would have thought that angry young man from back then would have gone on to push his musical boundaries to the extent that he has.
As for DG – is he reinventing himself as the new Laughing Len ?
I’ve been a long term fan of Weller’s, and am mostly enjoying the new album. I would like to think most people who were Jam and/or Style Council fans probably want to at least give his newer work the benefit of the doubt, however, I think admiring him more than loving what he does is more where I’m at these days. To me there always seem to be a couple of clunkers on every album and he can be a bit prone to over-egging songs that don’t need it nowadays. Although I personally think it’s great that he still challenges himself, he’s clearly very bored with the type of music a lot of his long term fans probably want him to do. This is especially a problem live, where the less open minded of his crowd, or “Jam Geezers” (TM) are simply not interested in hearing a new album track, for example. It’s a shame, and I suspect it’s something that quite a few others of his vintage probably experience.
I wish he’d get that hair cut though, it’s starting to resemble a Jimmy Saville wig. Come on Paul, even I managed a trip to the Barber’s yesterday…
“Admiring more than loving” – spot on.
Recent albums are good and you have to admire his desire to keep pushing on, but I haven’t been truly excited by a whole album of his since Sonik Kicks.
I think his haircut looks great! The songs not so much. They all seem to be a bit samey but then I’ve only listened once. His last album though I thought was one of his best. Especially the remixes. Great singing voice now too.

I should think the most conspicuous ghost goes by the name of Len.
Mmmm, like a smooth metaxa, if that isn’t an oxymoron.
Im enjoying the new Weller album. That’s all.
Here is the title track ‘On Sunset’ – Mmm, smooth

Dude! Like, chill out, man 😉
I don’t like the way he chews gum – and how much must he go through ??
Well, I suppose at least he didn’t call someone ‘cat’. The only time this word should be used is when specifically referring to an actual cat.
Could one use “The Cat” when referring to Phil Tufnell? Or Peter Bonetti?
Honourable exceptions both.
Can’t believe:
a) his hair and
b) he is still smoking, that may not end well
I enjoy quite a few of his solo albums but haven’t bought any since 22 Dreams, which I liked.
The smoking likely explains his, um, physique and physiognomy. Probably hair colour as well.
Probably smells terrible too …

Yes, that was a very good set of songs, and “That Dangerous Age” was a great single. Must dig the album out again actually.
Beautiful

I drift in and out with Weller but at first listen the new one sounds really good. Singing very well too.
It’s the smoking 😉 Didn’t work quite so well for Dylan.
I couldn’t get beyond track 3 on the new Dylan album. That “singing”…
I think one could say that Weller had a bigger vocal range than Dylan to begin with.
True enough.
So now I’m lovy’AfterSunset’. Fills the ears with joy even if you’re not aware that it does.
It’s revealing in each and every hearing.
