I’m unlikely to be able to go to these shows but if I was in the UK I definitely would be.
I have seen OMD several times in a live setting and they are one of those acts that can win over neutrals with their live show. If you know a few of their hits and you sort of like those, then this show is for you. As the show progresses you will recognise other songs, perhaps not realising that they did that one too.
Sealing the deal is the inspired coupling of Scritti Politti. I have never seen them live but I am told that Green’s voice is a thing of wonder when witnessed live. I expect we will get a one hour set and seeing them is probably well worth the entry fee in itself.
I know what you’re thinking – is it really going to happen what with COVID and whatnot? I think the time has come to get optimistic, the cases are going down, the vaccines are kicking in – and as long as we wash our hands with kindness and stop snogging everything that moves, we’re going to be fine.
Green’s voice is indeed a thing of wonder when witnessed live.
Saw them in Dublin around the last album and it was fantastic.
I was at that, having had tickets for their show in Dublin back in ’86 or around then before it was cancelled. They never played in London in all my years there so it was great to see them at that gig in Whelans. I was nervous but it turned out to be great.
We have tickets to an 80s revival festival in September, postponed from last year. OMD are on the bill along with a dozen or so other acts and were the main draw (along with cheap early bird tickets, though obviously we weren’t anticipating them being quite so early, and the festival site being walking distance from my other half’s house).
The Cupid & Psyche tour of Scritti is on, a direct transfer of delayed dates. So what’s the link to OMD?
Ver Scrits are down as the support for the OMD gigs.
For some of the OMD dates, but not all of them. And not my local one, sadly, just:
06/11/21: Leeds First Direct Arena
10/11/21: Cardiff Motorpoint Arena
12/11/21: Birmingham Resorts World Arena
13/11/21: London Eventim Apollo
14/11/21: Bournemouth International Centre
16/11/21: Brighton Centre
Oh, that’s quite a bonus…I have tickets for OMD and had no idea about the support.
Cancel that… ironically there’s no bonus at Hull Bonus Arena.
OMD are a great night out indeed. Their show in D.C remains one of my favorites
I wasn’t planning on getting any concert tickets for the foreseeable future, but threw that out of the window when I heard Scritti were playing Leeds. It’s something to look forward to, so let’s hope things are a bit better by then.
No interest at all in OMD, but Scritti Politti’s Word In Your Ear gig at The Lexington (2010 or -11?) is right up there amongst my best gigs ever. Green in excellent voice, great selection of material played and the best live sound I’ve ever experienced.
That was my feeling too Mike, on seeing them in 2007 at a small venue in Kilburn, the Luminaire. The voice was a revelation and all credit to them, and especially Rhodri, for being able to reproduce those songs from Cupid & Psyche live.
Got tickets for two of the Scritti dates in September and simply cannot wait. C&P85 is one of the finest albums ever laid to vinly.
Thanks for this BC – now going to see them in Leeds.
The tickets flew out very quickly but I did manage get tx for one of the Cupid & Psyche 85 shows – hope it happens but either way I’ve really enjoyed seeing Green do his thing in small venues over the last few years including the Word gig Mike H mentions earlier. I don’t think any of these shows will quite compare to standing in The Lexington or the Brudenell Social Club while an 80s Pop legend sings note-perfect renditions of The Sweetest Girl or Absolute and tells anecdotes about Miles Davis and Kraftwerk.
After the Scritti gig that The Word put on I recall some total bellends griping on The Word Blog that some of the music was running on a Laptop! Current Scritti keyboard player Rhodri Marsden weighed in to defend the fact that it wasn’t financially or logistically possible to get the cream of 1980s pop session musicians, Miles Davis and Arif Mardin to recreate the authentic sound of those recordings in a room above a pub…and indeed that some of the music was sequenced and sampled anyway.
Just to be clear if you see Scritti now just be prepared it will be the remarkably well preserved Green on magnificent voice & guitar, Rhodri doing the heavy lifting behind a bank of keyboards & computers, a drummer possibly playing syndrums and I think an additional guitarist.
