Once Upon A Time In The West. What a bloody marvellous soundtrack that film has! I’ve seen the film so often, but while I’ve had the soundtrack for years, I’ve never actually played it from beginning to end. I’m doing that right now and it’s the perfect lift for my currently foul mood.
I have to say though, Farewell To Cheyenne is still the best tune from it IMHO… If anyone fancies posting some lovely dramatic soundtracky stuff, I’ll do a spotify list…

Much as I love OUATITW (and the other leone’s) this is my favourite ;

The Tommy Soundtrack, whilst far from being atmospheric, does contain some memorably amusing moments.
1. Oliver Reed can’t sing (who’d-a thunk it?)
2. Jack Nicholson sounds like David Bowie (with a very plummy accent)
The high point for me is Tina Turner’s reading of Acid Queen

worth repeating but I meant this;

The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Great title, outstanding film, outstanding soundtrack. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
The piano motif (2.15) sounds to me like a slower version of the melody of the “See that girl, coming on down” refrain in Finishing Jubilee Street a few years later.
Rigid Digit says
The name Ennio Moricone is a general pointer to a great Soundtrack.
Elmer Bernstein is another name coated with similar quality.
Here’s one he made earlier – The Magnificent Seven

how cool is this one? Mancini + Welles

Ennio is amazing. Especially the Western soundtracks. But one of my favourites that’s sometimes overlooked is his soundtrack for Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. It’s beautiful throughout and really evokes the theme of nostalgia. The opening theme makes me smile as it immediately reminds me of the wonderful movie.

Oops, wrong clip. I meant this one:

Some great stuff there. Not quite South Pacific, but hey.
Why such a ‘current foul mood’? What’s caused that?
Moose the Mooche says
Switzerland supporter perhaps.

Phillip Glass’ score for Hamburger Hill.

A bad film but a fabulous soundtrack: Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle – One From The Heart.

Shared by brer Bingo on the Hip Hop thread a few months back, this brought Eric B & Rakim together with the Bomb Squad for their last great record together. The film wasn’t bad either.

The best bit…. in fact almost the only good bit…. from 200 Motels.
Better than the version on the album. Zappa, in almost his only onscreen appearance in the whole film, is quite staggeringly beautiful here. Those two blokes out of the Turtles… most decidedly are not. Ainsley Dunbar AND Jimmy Carl Black! What’s not etc.
Mousey says
Thanks for that – as a massive Zappa fan who finds the movie unwatchable and the album patchy that might mean it’s time for a – er, re-evaluation for me
Tiggerlion says
My favourite soundtrack is The Sweet Smell Of Success. There are two parts. One is the full Bernstein jazz orchestra and the other is Chico Hamilton’s club quintet. It set the template for Anatomy Of A Murder and West Side Story. Here are highlights.
mikethep says
Bernstein is the Man. Staccato is another great soundtrack.
And there’s The Man with the Golden Arm too, of course.

The title track was (I think?) the only track written specifically for the film, but the rest of the soundtrack is absolutely superb.
If you’ve never heard any reggae, this may be the only album you need

Restless Natives. A brilliant, funny film. And the soundtrack is, at the risk of damning with faint praise, the best thing that Big Country ever did.
