I have been listening to “A Day In The Life” for basically 30 years. I am of the opinion that if Sgt Pepper was full of 35 minutes of belches but still had “A Day In The Life” at the end, it would probably still be considered one of the best albums of all time.
However tonight I did something that I haven’t done in years; I put my parents old mono vinyl version on from beginning to end. And fuck me did Ringo’s drumming not just leap out at me.
Seriously! This is Reni from The Stone Roses level of groovy shit, except I heard Reni right away. When I first played Sgt Pepper all I heard was the songs, the melodies, the obvious stuff. But A Day In The Life is two songs, shoved together, with a piano linking them, and a drummer. The orchestra os filling in gaps. But the lack of gaps is all down to Ringo, it’s an astonishing performance.
