Crikey, evidently it’s been 5 years since I last posted. I feel like one of those bands Bob used to introduce on the OGWT. “It’s been five years since Jibbering Trout last visited these shores but they’re back with a new album and four new guitarists”.
I can probably get away with the same old boring stories. So who was best? The Beatles or The Stones? And what cover version is better than the original?
Clive says
Oh and I’m smashing the Afterword FPL league.
hubert rawlinson says
Welcome back, who are you again?
mikethep says
Are you still Clive of India?
Colin H says
I thought he was Clive at Leeds…
thecheshirecat says
No, Clive is in Shropshire.
Moose the Mooche says
He’s Clive and Dangerous.
Clive says
Indeed. Now that joke fell on the stoniest of grounds when I lived there. Just like saying a particularly dark place was like the black hole of Calcutta … phhh no sense of humour
nigelthebald says
The answer to your second question, @Clive, is this:
In fact I’d go so far as to say it’s the best cover of anything ever.
dai says
Welcome back, The Beatles edge the 60s, but The Stones smash them in the 70s
Moose the Mooche says
“The Beatles edge the 60s”….? Blimey, what an interesting metaphor
nigelthebald says
🤣🤣🤣
Vulpes Vulpes says
The Trout were never as good as their earlier albums had promised. The novelty of the four guitar attack wore thin before the end of side one of the comeback release ‘Seven Types Of Jabbering’. These days I only ever play ‘Hooked’ or ‘Pan Fried With Rosemary’.
Moose the Mooche says
Their faux-reggae album Brown Trout was a terrible mistake.
Candidly, it stank.
Podicle says
Welcome back Clive!
Listening to Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes the other day I was struck by what a great cover it is. It takes Jackie Deshannon’s jaunty romp about a good-time gal and reinvents it with a supremely glacial and predatory makeover.
Mike_H says
Welcome back.
Re: Covers, some may certainly disagree, but I think Madeleine Peyroux’ jaunty version of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me To The End Of Love” is a little bit better.
.
ObviouslyAretha’s version of “Respect” is a candidate, and Jimi’s “All Along The Watchtower” too.
Black Celebration says
If I could go back 5 years, I would have insisted on our group of parents taking the slightly more expensive global pandemic insurance for my daughter’s school trip to the USA in early 2020. We didn’t.
Tiggerlion says
Welcome back, Clive.
The answer to your question is Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through The Grapevine, obviously (😉), but I’m thinking Kishi Bashi performing This Must Be Place (Naive Melody) might be better.
nigelthebald says
Good suggestions, Tiggs, but nah – it’s the Reverend Al covering the Brothers Gibb.
Just an opinion, obviously, but the correct one 😜
