My eldest boy will be heading to Leeds today from St Andrew’s – primarily to see Iron Maiden tonight – but will be staying a day or so in Leeds.
He asked me what is there to do in Leeds. Even though I’m from and grew up in nearby Sheffield, I have only every been to Leeds to go to Roundhay Park for concerts.
So, any suggestions ?

There’s a decent art gallery and city museum, almost next door to each other; waterfront to south of city centre; and central streets are a nice place to mooch about with plenty of old Victorian buildings. Also a short bus ride to Kirkstall Abbey.

The Henry Moore Institute is also next to the art gallery. Apologies if this is what you meant.

Royal Armouries Museum is well worth a visit.

Second hand records, Wall of Sound below Crash Records on the Headrow.

And Relics Records on New Briggate.
Indoor market worth a visit, also loads of nice old pubs and some crappy new ones. Everyman cinema for a movie and get a great Indian at Sheesh Mahal on the way out of town on Kirkstall Rd

Second the Royal Armouries call.

Thanks all for inputs, which have been passed on.

Jumbo records to. Any of the North bars. The Thackray medical museum.
The old indoor market is well worth a wander, as are the Victorian enclosed shopping passages.
Agree about the waterfront.
Get a haircut/perm: my wife does regularly, which is why I know the place so well, from hours of aimless wandering.
hubert rawlinson says
Let me know when you’re both up @retropath2
If you do visit the Thackray don’t visit before lunch as the stench of the Victorian Street will permeate your tastebuds and your food will taste shit.

Indeed: I am accumulating a bunch of when in Leeds chums!!!

Definitely get some Indian street food at Bundobust, visit Northern Monk brewery, and the nearby Tetley gallery. Also an exhibit at the City Museum that my niece had a part in, The Forgotten, is very good as well.

Northern Monk versus North: discuss. (I prefer the latter.)

It’s getting on for 35 years since I last visited (one of my fellow sixth formers ended up there), but it invoved drinking “snakebite and black” and dancing to The Mission with a girl dressed in purple velvet and Doc Martens.
I expect things have changed a bit since.
SteveT says
Purple velvet still in vogue in Leeds
Mike_H says
The streets may be paved in gold in That London, in t’Leeds they’re paved in purple velvet.

The Angel Inn, just off Briggate, is the finest pub in the centre of Leeds, and is also the cheapest. The owners, Sam Smiths Brewery, is run by a certifiable loony, so you are subject to several daft rules.
Far more touristy is Whitelock’s just down the street.
Avoid the Three Legs on the Headrow unless he’s up for a scrap.
hubert rawlinson says
It’s pulled down now but the Market Tavern was the only pub in Leeds that I didn’t feel comfortable drinking in. I reckon the clientele moved to the Three Legs..

If you are on Facebook you might be aware of the Long Lost Pubs of Leeds site. Lots of stories about the Market “madhouse” Tavern,Nags Head,Big Lill’s and other similar infamous establishments. Occasionally l miss the tense brooding atmosphere of some of the cities old hostelries, then a quick scroll through Peter Sutcliffe’s favourite Leeds pubs never fails to shatter the old rose tinted glasses.
hubert rawlinson says
I’d never visited Big Lil’s, it was mentioned on a television programme about murder. I’ve just looked it up, the Market Tavern looks like a safer place to have visited.

See, as a visitor to Leeds for the first time in 40 years, I really really liked Whitelocks. Instead of pinching it, I even paid three quid for one of their pint glasses. I live on the edge, I do. The steak & ale pie was indeed most excellent
