So, it’s our 27th wedding anniversary and Mrs P the architect is in a hot bath because she’s got flu and I’ve cancelled our reservation at north London’s hottest Thai pop-up restaurant.
I’m in the kitchen cooking her favourite chicken kozani, drinking overpriced imported lager, wearing my favourite red cowboy shirt, and listening to Get Happy!!
What ya listening to on a Friday night?
minibreakfast says
New Sparks, then new Neil Young lined up for afterwards. Both on the vinlies! HURRAH!
Moose the Mooche says
Blackstar all the way through, plus the extras from Lazarus. Tremendous, exhausting, draining, glorious.
24/96 if you’re interested.
minibreakfast says
I didn’t realise we had to post our measurements as well.
(12″, 33 1/3)
Moose the Mooche says
I am aware of your measurements, madam.
Very aware.

Steely Dan: Gaucho. Preceded by Pretzel Logic. It’s been years since I gave these a proper listen (if ever).
Drinks: Old Speckled Hen, followed by Californian Merlot. chicken chorizo and rice for dinner.

I’m listening to Hunting High and Low by a-Ha on the vinly for the fourth time tonight.
@minibreakfast found it in the course of her work pillaging the chazzas and boots of the nation and sent it to me. It was the first record I ever bought; I was seven. Listening to it like this is genuinely emotional. It’s a fantastic record.
Bless you, Min. xx
minibreakfast says
A pleasure, Bob.
Ain’t you put Scoundrel Days on yet?!!
Moose the Mooche says
In an English Language exam at school we had to write a story choosing from the titles Scoundrel Days, Brothers in Arms and Silk and Steel.
I chose the A-Ha. I think these days I would have chosen the Five Star.
minibreakfast says
Where did you go, the School Of Pop?!
Moose the Mooche says
Yep. I majored in Now!ology.
Freddy Steady says
@minibreakfast
Scoundrel Days is that rarity. An absolutely fantastic second album. In fact, a fantastic album full stop. A proper record.
JustB says
I’ll give it many spins tomorrow!
Freddy Steady says
“I’ve been losing you “has a lovely bass run. Great song.

All this love for a-ha is making me tearful.

The Neil’s great innit?
bungliemutt says
It is. Almost makes up for the last 20 years of shite.

One disc from a Buffalo Springfield box set while cooking; then the Band of Gypsys LP and the Gong side from Greasy Truckers at Dingwalls….

The first album by The Rails. We’ll be in Manchester for a couple of days next week and will be going to see them at the Deaf Institute while we’re there.

a friend has advised me of a fix for the sticking draw problem on old Xbox 360s.
last night I retrieved my console and games from the spare room and now its loading discs splendidly.
tonight I will be visiting the fictional island of Banoi and fucking up some zombies and assorted bad people in the classic Dead Island.
my wife will retire to bed early and bang on the floor as I will be running the sound through the stereo at “realistic levels”.
tomorrow morning I will probably be told to grow up.
retropath2 says
Another listen to the new John Murry: A Short History of Decay. It’s a grower and it’s great, and just the sort of mood evoked for then ploughing deep into Tin Star, theTim Roth new boxy.
Indian takeaway sitting nervously in my gut.

A bit of randomising going on here.
Rickie Lee Jones’ “Night Train” is playing, having just heard “Aunt Florrie Remembers”, one of Vivian Stanshall’s “Sir Henry At Rawlinson End” recordings that he did for John Peel, many years ago.
Some Carla Bley, a Debussy string quartet, a song by Wild Man Fischer, another by Shirley & Dolly Collins and “Trumpton Riots” by Half Man-Half Biscuit will follow.
I’ve just eaten some Hunan Chilli Beef with Egg Noodles and may open a bottle of 2015 Portugese Vinho Regional.
Sewer Robot says
Happy Anniversary! Hope Mrs P feels better soon.
I am listening to this mofo:

Music in the early evenings is chef’s choice – which is usually me.
The last few evenings have had Loretta Lynn, John Prine and John Hiatt. if I’m on the decks tonight, I’m going back to a louder We Were Promised Jetpacks.
Here’s Loretta with a song that astounded TLOML:

Odd evening….watched the Test match, then played Morris On live whilst cooking (wife’s choice). Long Facetime sessionwith our daughter meant we went straight into Cold Feet, now watching Clapton at 70 at the RAH recorded from Sky Arts. It’s OK, but not the best band he’s had, and the backing singers are annoying me. Oh…Paul Carrack is in the band…hmm…not sure about this at all now…

My late night listening has been this:
Prom 53: Beneath The Underdog: Charles Mingus Revisited, from the BBC Radio iPlayer site.
The Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, with soloists Shabaka Hutchings on bass clarinet, Christian Scott on trumpet, the showboating but nonetheless excellent pink-haired, dancing Leo Pellegrino on baritone sax, plus top-notch vocalist Kandace Springs.
A simply stunning concert (which is still available to see or hear for the next 14 days, if you’re not blocked).
Quite apart from the guest soloists there are stunning solos from several of the Orkest’s saxophonists, their veteran trombonist who is about to retire after 25 years service, their pianist, bassist and drummer and I think a few trumpet solos too.
The Albert Hall audience went absolutely nuts at several points, which is not usual behaviour at The Proms. But then orchestras don’t normally swing this hard.
If this is not your sort of music then don’t listen to it and I won’t care at all.
If you think, or maybe even know, that you might like it, click on the link. Or if you’re in “foreign” find a sneaky, devious way to get to it and I won’t tell on you. Promise.

Britain’s present to the world is the venerable BBC Radio iPlayer (but not, I would guess, available in N. Korea).
Tories probably working on its dismantling as I speak.

Even though it’s now Saturday night here…..
Wife and teenage boys all out so I’m all alone with a selection of mature cheddar, White Stilton and Cornish IPA listening to yesterday’s purchases….
New Neil Young and Tori Amos both rather good (seems to be return to form for Tori Amos), the posthumous Greg Allman on at moment (rather splendid version of “Willin'”) and the new Sparks lined up next.

Get well soon, Mrs. P. Last night we were listening to Henry Rollins, followed by Tom Ravenscroft on 6music. Our usual Friday evening is to sit in our conservatory and listen to the radio. Its really rather nice.
