Do we really need another mix of this album? This time in bloody Dolby Atmos. This is the second Blu-Ray in 2 years or so of this album. Are they having a laugh?
Having bought the last one, I’m damned if I’m going to fork out for this!

They call the recent remix the ‘2018’ mix, even though it was only released a couple of years ago, so I guess they think it’s due again. Animals is my favourite Floyd album and I thought the last remix was superb and fixed what had been a slightly muffled sound on the old CD I had. I have no intention of buying another mix and I don’t even know what Atmos is.
The desperate milking of classic rock fans before that cohort expires is now the norm. I guess they wouldn’t do it if people didn’t buy it.
Completely agree Pod. The 2018 remix is superb but I need no more. Actually I have two copies for boring reasons if someone needs one at reasonable rates.
The 2018 mix didn’t come out for three or four years because Uncle Rog objected to the wording on the back cover. It didn’t say “this was all Rog’s idea, for he’s a genius, and the rest of them just did what he told them to” or something similar.
I’m so glad I’m not a PF completist.
I remember back in the audiophile LP days they released a bunch of albums in half speed mastered versions. A few years later, CDs were released and they put out the same titles on gold CDs. When SACDs came out, the exact same titles… then blu-ray audio. At some point I realized that I don’t even like George Benson’s Breezin’ but I had three copies of it.
Pink Floyd is the worst for trying to get you to buy their albums multiple times. I’m not playing that game any more.
Worse than the first Crimso album? That’s been through more editions than the chuffin’ Yellow Pages by now.
Whilst I am not going to be purchasing this (I only have a 5.1 system not Atmos and already have the BD from a couple of years ago), in their defence……
When this came out a couple of years ago, there were loads of complaints that it didn’t include an Atmos mix. Given the actual mix was done in 2018 and held up by internal band politics, at the time it was originally done Atmos really wasn’t that big a thing. Now they have rectified and provided an Atmos mix, everyone is complaining……
If you don’t have the original BD, then it’s a good buy and not too expensive (about £30) and you can actually buy the stand-alone BD without taking out a small mortgage to buy a box set full of marbles.
If you already have the original BD, it’s not an essential purchase and, at the end of the day, no one is forcing you to buy it.
I was thinking of getting the Rog waters redux of the dark side anyone got any advice on whether it’s worth a purchase.main difference etc.
It’s shit.
Does that help?
It tilt’s the balance when it is succinctly put like that.
He’s right. It’s absolutely awful. Avoid. It sounds like the pub bore droning on while an AI jukebox plays “something a bit proggy” .
The definitive judgement here, as always, is Gar’s. He likes it.
Ce pas n’est. I like the new poem he recites over Any Colour You Like. And I liked the version of Breathe, IIRC. But I remember most of it was a bit rubbish and some of it was astonishingly rubbish.
This qualification comes a little late, Gar. Many hundreds of people reading your glowing eulogy rushed out and didn’t buy it as a result.
Was Animals one of their dull ones after DSotM and before the half of WYWH that’s quite good?
There is nothing between DSOM and WYWH.
Animals is a good one, if a bit underexposed (look what comment I’m responding to: QED).
Full-on and aggressive, decidedly NOT pastoral – and a country mile better than The Wall IMHO).
Came out between WYWH and The Wall – might have slipped through the cracks a bit…
…are you excluding DSotM from the dull list?
Everything they did after Obscured By Clouds was and remains overpoweringly dull.
On Dark Side they jettisoned everything that made them unique. The spaciness. It’s claustrophobic, not spacey. The pastoral – nothing gentle here. The humour – we get “I’ve always been mad” instead of “cornflakes, I like cornflakes”. I can’t remember anyone ever skinning up on a Dark Side album. A bad trip, man, a bummer. Dark Side was corporate rock for the suits who wanted to demonstrate their hi-fi, and still is. The best things on it are a session singer they barely paid and didn’t credit, and Rog’s last ever good bassline in Money.
Fooey.
Allegedly Dave Gilmour played bass on Money as grumpy knickers couldn’t get his head around 7/8.
I do like the way both Gilmour and Waters describe each other as “The Grumpy One”…
Gilmour played more bass than he’s credited for, but even he says that Waters is “on the money” (swidt?):
“It’s Roger’s riff,” said David Gilmour when asked where the famous 7/4 time signature came from. “Roger came in with the verses and lyrics for Money more or less completed. We just made up middle sections, guitar solos and all that stuff.”
Although musically it’s probably their most interesting album since Atom Heart Mother (the melodies on Dogs and Pigs don’t really sound like Pink Floyd), the “concept” on Animals is stretched cigarette paper-thin.
I can live without a strong “concept” for such a musically interesting album – it’s really just a framework to get Uncle Rog’s brain working, when all’s said and done…
There’s definitely a balance to be struck. Although often described as a concept album, DSOTM doesn’t have any sort of narrative to speak of, but what it does have is a lot of heart, and I’d imagine that helped it strike a chord with substantially more people than the comparatively cold and austere Animals.
For me the problem with Animals is that they (or presumably Rog as it was all his own work) forgot to write any tunes. DSOTM and WYWH have them in abundance, along with the sonically interesting stuff. I’ve tried really hard over the years to love it more and I did buy the recent remix/5.1, but sadly, still not really doing it for me.
Crossover success into the mainstream nearly always depends on the choons
It was Rog’s thing – my sense is DG is the melody guy and he confined himself to some superb guitar parts but didn’t get involved in the writing I think. The guitars on “Dogs” are brilliant, for example.
Is part of the problem that Animals is often sited as being their best album? I’d have to admit it’s mine, but am not interested in another version, I’d rather have the white label test pressing of the 1977 issue tbh.
Out of interest, who cites it as their best album? To me, the media (and most fans) always seemed to be in a three-way split between Dark Side, WYWH and The Wall.
(For the record, my own favourite is sometimes Atom Heart Mother and sometimes Obscured by Clouds…)
Atom Heart is a lovable album Not many albums you can feel a real affection for. Like a friend, you forgive and even enjoy its imperfections. I added Biding My Time to it (between Fat Old Sun and Breakfast), because although it’s chronologically a little late, it fits better here than anywhere else.
I know fan versions of Iconic Rock Classics get little interest here, but you might give “Burning Bridges”, my edit of Obscured, a spin:

A little background from Roger Waters himself here:

I already have it, HP: and Pastoral; and the Echoes one (can’t remember what you called it). You generalise about these “fan versions” getting little interest here – but there are still a few rugged individualists about the old place…
Gaw bless ya!
Is the Echoes/23 thing available to download? I found the page but can’t find a link on it. Ta
I’ll stick it here, with pleasure (as the Prince said to the Society Girl).
Have you cunningly hidden the link in a punctuation mark, HP?
I am multi-tasking. Intoning “Hullo birds hullo trees hullo sky” in dawn ritual from the deck, feeding dogs, completing restorative bowel movements, and blinking rheumily at keyboard. Here ya go (and there’s a super bonus in the form of “Pastoral” – more tinkering and messing about with Iconic Rock Classics!)

I’ve been on FNF Island, I know what you get up to with yer hyperlinks…
Much appreciated. Will be weekend listening this…er…weekend
Well, I really enjoyed that. Now, if you could just put out versions at 24/192 FLAC and an Atmos mix I would definitely download them again for free. Ta
If Steven Wilson had done the OBC remix, everyone here would be claiming it a work of audacious genius. Because it’s made by just another Old Afterword Twat, nobody cares.
Dude, putting songs in a different order is not a “remix”. It’s shuffling. We can all do that, especially inthe gloom of the sick room.
Do you two go everywhere together? And why do you dress the same?
Dude, yes, it’s a reshuffle, but with fades, both outs and ins, and a little bit of extraction and overdubbing, so more an edit, and definitely not a playlist. What I did with the album could, in theory, be done by anybody with a basic knowledge of Audacity and a little intuitive imagination – so not you, then, Moosey. And stop fidgeting in the back there.
(@fitterstoke – we don’t dress the same – he wears the back end of the horse, I the front)
pfffllllww…. what what what was that? Sorry, I often fidget in my sleep
Anyone seen or heard from Arthur Cowslip recently?
I think he exploded when I reported that the Oldfield Experience show was crap.
Arf! Oh dear!
Shock news, new music is still being made in the 2020s. The older “we” AWistas get, the more our long term memories get to demonstrate their dominance over any more recent occurrence. As I said to Sir Stafford Cripps.
Think we knew that…but what did you expect to find in a thread about Pink Floyd’s Animals?
Can I direct you to one of the New Music threads?
For example:
Thumbs aloft!
Bleating and babbling we fell on the Board of Trade with a screeeeeeeeam
There’s a place available at a playback of the Dolby Atmos Animals – if anyone would be interested in attending and writing it up please let me know, it will be held in Battersea on 14 May at 6pm.
Will the new mix feature new songs? Will it have Syd Barrett on it? Will there be space rock? Will it not be terminally fuckingly throatslashingly depressing?
