When fitterstoke started the latest Randomizer thread, I was happy to join in – I like the serendipity of chance that brings up tracks that sometimes complement each other, or that are strangely revealing about the poster.
We all, I think it’s safe to assume, have a wide collection of music from which to draw from, and so 5 tracks chosen could be from anybody. And yet, we all have musical fingerprints. Could you tell just by looking at 5 tracks, which venerable AWer is baring their soul, or at least rolling the musical dice?
That’s where Randomizer Whodunnit comes in. Send me by PM your list of 5 tracks. When I have received 5 sets, I’ll post all the sets in a comment below, then list the posters in alphabetical order. The challenge for those competing is to correctly match the set with the AWer.
You can just do that, but it’s more fun if you explain your workings, (e.g. only Rigid Digit could have posted the Kinks and the Quireboys).
Let’s see if this has got any life! I think I’ll just let each set play out until all the right answers are guessed/deduced.
One person has already preempted this thread by PMing me before I posted, but I’ll wait until (if) I get 4 more before sharing.
OK! With thanks to the courageous first 5 who have stepped up to the plate to have their musical tastes assessed and dissected, here goes with
Round One!

And here’s your line-up
a) Fitterstoke
b) Kid Dynamite
c) Leedsboy
d) Max The Dog
e) Mikethep
Match away!
Well e) Mikethep is Set 1 for a start
You posted while I was typing…but it’s the guess we all will make! 🙂
I’m inclined towards Fitterstoke for Set 1.
MiketheP for Set 3.
A wild guess Leedsboy for Set 4.
Nope – I was set 2…
Well; set 1 and e) seems like the obvious fit! Mikethep and all that jazz…surely?
Then it gets tricky! I’m too tired to solve the rest (but probably couldn’t even if I was well rested…)
Had no idea I was so identifiable!
Leedsboy at 4
Kid Dynamite at 3
(It’s early Sunday Morning …)
Set 1 – e)
Set 2 – a)
Set 3 – b)
Set 4 – c)
Set 5 – d)
All correct, but apart from jazz being the giveaway for mikethep, there haven’t been any arguments in favour of the other choices. I thought there were one or two easy pointers, myself, but then I have the advantage of knowing the answers.
Two new sets received since the first round – just waiting for 3 more, then off we go again.
I’m mildly disappointed to learn that I’m so easy. When my random five came up with no prog, I thought I was a winner!
Twas The Byrds and SAHB that pushed me in your direction…..
I’m hoping that it wasn’t the Nik Kershaw song (fine that it actually is) that was my key giveaway.
Hamish Hawk and Josh Rouse starred my choice
(no logic as to why though)
Damien Rice and The Go- Betweens – sensible, emotionally-literate centrist Dad of a certain age.
I should explain Anonhi – that came from one of those cover-mounted cds with Mojo or Uncut.
I’ve nearly got enough for another quintet – I just need one more volunteer.
My thanks, once again to the next group of 5 bold AWers, willing to strip off and reveal, anonymously, their impressive personal collections, it’s time for:
Round Two!

Little Klunk – Stan Tracey
Mother – John Lennon
Love Will Stone You – Emitt Rhodes
… and the line-up of Unusual Suspects:
a) Chrisf
b) Mike_H
c) NigelT
d) pencilsqueezer
e) Steve Walsh
Have at them!
I have an unfair advantage, in that I have known Steve’s music collection for several decades. It’s bleedin’ obvious to me, but clearly not to anyone else.
… and NigelT said something to the effect of you won’t have to look very hard to find the track that reveals his quintet.
I felt that the randomizer did a pretty good job of making it easy for anyone who knows me well – but, by excluding tracks by John Otway, didn’t make it completely obvious.
Needless to say, that thought had crossed my mind.
I thought mine would be easy to guess seen as it contains a track by a band that I continually carp on about on here and am probably the only person that ever mentions them (hint – they are Japanese).
Full disclosure – my randomiser was from my Fiio (yes I got one) that had a hundred or so of my “classic:” albums on it. Thought this would be easier that my much larger and diverse library (which would probably pop up with tracks that even I don’t like)
To be fair, MIke_H did guess your one right. Just got the rest wrong – which means it should be easy for someone to provide all 5 right answers.
2 = pencilsqueezer
5 = MikeH
(or the other way round, or not at all)
Bang to rights for mine, guv. I thought it wouldn’t be so easy to guess. (sadface)
Suspect you’re right with your other choice too.
Guessing:
NigelT is Set 4
Chrisf is Set 1
Steve Walsh is Set 3
Keep guessing!
KLF and Stan Tracey were the key pointers to me
(even if it was more guess work than deduction and research)
I had Pencil for 2 before I even knew he was on the list.
It’s a fair cop. Obviously my obfuscation skill needs a bit of work.
Steve Walsh set 1 I’d guess.
So far, 3 out of 5 have been guessed correctly. And there are no new runners or riders waiting to take their positions.
Meantime – here’s a randomizer whodunnit from an earlier thread:

“ Just one more thing…”
Doh – I screwed that up……..
Thanks to the three who have submitted new random quintets – I just need two more to start a new round.
Happy Tuesday, and with thanks to the Famous Five who have ventured onto the Kirrin Island for the latest whodunnit, here goes:

Standing in for Julian, Dick and Ann, George and Timmy the dog are:
a) badartdog
b) hubert rawlinson
c) Locust
d) Rigid Digit
e) slotbadger
Many thanks to them – now let’s see how transparent their selections are!
I’ll go for 4 as being Hubert, if only because of the Sandy Denny song. (Having said, I am hoping it a deep cut of her covering the same named song, by one time paramour, Jackson C. Frank, rather than the one by her, on her worst album. Unless, of course, it is a version of JCJ’s, in which case I’d like a copy.)
3 could be Locust, I think
Half right.
Perhaps no. 5 is Rigid Digit??
Indeed. RD has quite a fingerprint – almost unmistakeable.
Toy Dolls appearance no doubt confirms
That would be a pointer towards @Barry-Blue, I’d hazard. It was the confluence of late 70s/early 80s tracks that clued me in. That and the fact that you PM-ed me your list for inclusion in the whodunit, of course.
It was the trio of Madness, Toy Dolls and Yachts…
Mine isn’t obvious unless you know me well, I think, but none of the others could have been mine!
If 5 and 4 are correct, as above – and 3 is incorrect re Locust – then, of the two options remaining, I think Locust’s selection is more likely to be…1…?
I’d say so too because of Rufus Wainwright who I believe she likes.
Good point. My reasoning was that it seemed a more, er, eclectic mix than batch 2.
Batch 2 was mine – and yes, @fitterstoke shows a distinct lack of eclecticism – it chose tracks by my three favourite bands and then my favourite tracks by the Fall and Go-Betweens.
I’m not sure you’ve grasped the idea of the game fully, badartdog…
But never mind, | think that’s round 3 over now.
it’s interesting both how some posters, familiar after 1-2 decades of posting, are instantly recognizable, and that others are beguiling in what they reveal.
I’m not sure how many more rounds there will be before interest peters out – I have one candidate for round 4, and am happy to hang around in case 4 others want to join. There wasn’t any interest in a round drawn from 2017, so I won’t repeat that.
Thanks to all for joining in – I’ve enjoyed it.
Can I just say it should be Bags of Grain my over-enthusiastic finger mistyped,
Apols for jumping the gun.
That’s OK – it’s not a competition, there aren’t any prizes.
I enjoyed These Sticks by The Afghan Whigs, not a band I have heard much by.
Black Love by the Whigs is probably my favourite album ever, most of their stuff is worth a listen.
I don’t own any music from batch 2 (apart from REM’s debut album on LP, bought at the time and hated it so much I never bothered with them again).
Batch 3, as guessed by retro, contains Neil Young. I thought everyone knew how much I dislike Neil Young by now! 😉
And I only have one artist in common with batch 4 and 5. Sandy Denny and Madness.
So it could only be no. 1!
Funny – the sixth track to be chucked up was by Beth Jeans Houghton!
Hmmm, point duly taken, @locust, but don’t you have tracks and albums “for completion” in your collection, even if you don’t much care for them?
I know, a dreadful state of affairs, not to say a waste of megabytes. In my defence, as I go through my shelves once more, re-ripping, I have sent many of my “I don’t really like but”s off to meet their great recycler in the sky.
(Or is that a cunning ploy to obfuscate my entry into any future round, evil cackle………..)
I have bad albums by otherwise good artists, but none by artists I really dislike!
Also, as I mentioned on the other randomizer thread; I can’t randomize all of my tracks in my WMP anymore, they’re too many, so the only way I can get the player to randomize tracks is from a playlist – these tracks are all in my 1967-2017 playlist I made for my 50th birthday bash. I picked out a few favourite tracks from each year of my life (no more than five for each year), so I’m certainly not going to put a Neil Young track in that list! 😀
I just checked (in case some compilation had sneaked him in) and can confirm: no Neil Young in my home, neither ripped to computer, downloaded or on physical media! The only Neil Young in my computer are a few cover versions by other artists.
I think they are all DrewToo in a variety of cunning disguises.
Arf!
