Same a parliament opening in UK, speech is written by the government as it sets out the parliamentary agenda for the upcoming term. Beginning and ending of the speech were his own words though (or from his staff).
If this does indeed have the intended effect on Trump’s madness then we still have to deal with the tricky problem that is Alberta. I am making my first proper visit there in August (went through once on the train), could be interesting …
What’s the tricky problem that is Alberta? I’m a lot less up to date with Canadian politics than I might be and didn’t even realise Charles was there until you mentioned it.
A very right wing province who believe they are ill served by federal government here. They are crucial to Canadian affluence as an oil producing province, much of which heads south to the US. They are making noises about separatism or even joining the US. A lot of the people who set up camp in Ottawa a few years ago came from there.
I am not sure, the link has plenty of info. The premier Danielle Smith is a big Trump fan, and is stirring things up. In the 90s Quebec came very very close to independance in a referendum so I guess the result could be respected. Think Scotland.
One thing that has come up is all of the land in Canada belongs to the indigenous “First Nations”, it is just being used by the predominantly initially white settlers in a kind of awkward loan (rather than being completely stolen). So if they did vote for separation then they don’t own the land anyway.
Who TF is “Brian”? Can we not just call people their actual names for the benefit of those of us who don’t have a (wild guess here) Private Eye subscription?
While have no desire to start a spat, only way I can answer your genuine question is by asking a couple of genuine questions of my own.
Namely:
1) Why are you making such a big issue out of my use of a jokey rather than offensive nickname you claim not to understand in an inconsequential thread that would have otherwise quickly sank without trace?
2) Since when did you, I or anyone else here have the right to ask a fellow AWer to modify the language they choose to use in their posts?
1) No spat at my end. You still haven’t answered my fairly harmless question though.
2) I’m not asking for any modification of your language, I just wondered why people (not just you) are using one name when another is readily available. Crack on, dude.
I’d quite like him to have actually said “fuck you, Trump”.
He didn’t write the speech though. Mark Carney’s office came up with it. I call that cheating! The lazy feck.

Hmm. I now find myself doubting all authorship. I’m not even sure I wrote this.
Thanks for your valuable contribution nevertheless
Some bits of it were less valuable than others, I feel.
Can you imagine what speeches would be like if Chaz actually had to write them?
“Hello, um, where are we? Why am I here?…”
“How true, how very, very true!”
Anyone seen Dave?
Dave’s not here…..
OK Dave…Is Dave there?
“Let’s pop into one’s green hice annd ask Baron Brocolli and Lady Lupin.”
Ying tong tiddle-i- po.
I would love it if Brian went off piste in the middle of the speech. “This damn pen!”
If Charlie has any sense he’ll drop into a record shop and grab some Stan Rogers while he’s there.
Great band

Thanks. Does the constitution allow for separation from the rest of Canada, or even a referendum demanding it?

Correction: Smith says she is against separatism, but won’t stand in it’s way
Interestingly, UK monarchs apparently rule Canada independently of other dominions.
If the UK became. a Republic tomorrow, Brian would still be King of Canada

I’m all for that, “MC Escher”!
Brian is Chuck the Hippie son of Brenda. Third of his name.
UK monarchs…
Rule…
Dominion…
King…
Given the context, it is not terribly difficult to work out
FWIW, my sub to Private Eye lapsed many years ago
So why not use Charles? Genuine question
Probably for the same reason @pencilsqueezer named him Chuck and I refer to him as Chiz.
I call him Chas. And Dave. Who are we talking about again?
Brian May, I think
@MC-Escher

Inconsequential thread? It’s about our sovereignty! Shame it devalued into nonsense, but it’s a free world baby
Just to clarify, while the thread is inconsequential the issue that inspired it is anything but.
Are you sure about those last five words, Dai?

Indeed
‘wild guess’
Yeah, right.
You know best in this matter, of course.
