I mentioned this album of Led Zep covers by Vanessa Fernandez in my Blogger Takeover post. Basically a female singer with a shit hot session band (including Jim Keltner on drums) doing an album on mainly acoustic LZ covers. It appears to be getting rave reviews in the audiophile community as being a great recording (it does sound good).
Been listening to it a bit over the past week or two and its definitely growing on me and better than I expected, At first it sounded a little “sterile” (as is oft the case with audiophile recordings !) but there’s something there that keeps bringing me back. Here’s the second track – a very much acoustic version of Black Dog.
I don’t recall there being much in that way of LZ covers out there – is it that its a band that’s difficult to cover or is a rights issue ?
So, your favourite LZ covers please………
The first one was in ’69, “Your Time Is Gonna Come” by none other than Sandie Shaw.
It would be a rights issue if they blocked anything they had already borrowed. Actually there are shedloads of covers out there: https://secondhandsongs.com/artist/17/originals#nav-entity
My favourite is Jerry Lee Lewis’ take on Rock’n’Roll
follower closely by Clarence Gatemouth Brown
It’s Thursday night! It’s Top Of The Pops!
Here’s CCS, an all-star band featuring Alexia Korner
Alexia? Wasn’t aware he’d transitioned.
We’re very inclusive here Ian, as you know.
Does this count?
It’s been a long time since I been on the dole.
Living in North America I’m sick to death of Classic rock so I hardly want to listen to led Zepplin in whatever form ever again. Maybe Bands should put a limit on radio play so that everyone isn’t sick to death of them everytime they switch the radio dial.
FM Radio/Classic Rock is something that has never really crossed the pond.
The stuff that gets over-played here, and I only know this from hearing it all the time in charity shops, is the pop-lite of ‘True,’ ‘Red Red Wine,’ ‘Baby Jane,’ ‘Gold,’ ‘Uptown Girl,’ ‘Let’s Dance,’ ‘I’m Still Standing,’ etc.
In fact anything from 1983, no one’s ever quite worked out why.
Where are you?
England, watching the Test Match.
Carry-on!
Here’s a quirky one, ‘Poor Tom’ by Tamalin (1997), featuring Tina McSherry on vocal (and John McSherry on pipes):
Hadn’t heard that or of this ur-Corrs family band. Pipes took an age of anticipation to break thru’ the Imelda May-ness of it before that point, and then nailed it.
Sounds like you need this: http://www.thewheelsoftheworld.com/
I have Tripswitch the album, but I can’t stand that Harper bloke. What’s he like, as I’m sure you’ve met him around and about.
No, I’ve barely heard of him…
😉 Just ordered Tamalin from dodgers marketplace for 99p (+p&p £1.26)
I was in a covers band that tried Zep covers more than once – never got them out of the rehearsal room until we got a female lead singer….after that, we managed a reasonably successful version of The Rover…..noting a high proportion of female vocalists above…
There is a female Zep covers band called Lez Zeppelin.
Our little gang used to mercilessly take the piss out of a certain LZ cover band’s singer, because his curly blonde wig looked more Bonnie Tyler than Robert Plant.
Both Dolly Parton and Frank Zappa have covered “Stairway To Heaven”. And last year MOJO did a “Physical Graffiti” covers CD which was quite good, especially Songhoy Blues covering “Kashmir” and Micheal Kiwanuka with “Ten Years Gone”. And Kitty, Daisy & Lewis did “Boogie With Stu”…
You’re probably all aware of the Rolf Harris cover of Stairway To Heaven but perhaps don’t know that it sprang from an Aussie TV called The Money Or The Gun in which a different version of Stairway… was performed each week in a different style. These were collected on a CD too.

Sorry, I meant to post this:
This one was part of the “fun” too.
John Paul Young – a one hit wonder in the UK, but a 12 hit wonder in Australia.
According to wikipedia, he was more popular in Austria than anywhere else in Europe
Touchy subject!
After a couple of years my copy of the CD went “off” – the last few tracks went unplayable. The two replacement copies I ordered, including one from the USA (I’m in the UK), had the same problem, to a greater or lesser extent.
Needless to say, one of my favourites is in the unreachable group.
I quite like Dread Zeppelin
Another vote for Tortelvis and his pals from me. Always reminded me a bit of Alabama 3 in the ‘honouring’ of the rock’n#roll tradition and the creative backstories.
How on earth did she afford the peerless Keltner?
Heart always do great Zeppelin, not least because Ann Wilson’s got the same range as Planty in his prime:

Iron Maiden tackle Communication Breakdown (B-Side of the sensitively titled Bring Your Daughter … To The Slaughter)
Does this count?
How about an album of French jazz covers of Zep? L’Orchestre National de Jazz have done onw and it’s on Spotify: Close to Heaven.

Apologies if you’ve all seen this lots of times before….
Stefani Germanotta (i.e. Lady Gaga) performing Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Maker” live at the Bitter End NYC in January 2006.
Joan Baez did a good “Baby I’m gonna leave you” (see what I did there…)
And of course, the Small Faces covered “Whole Lotta Love” on their first album in 1966 – four years before Plant and Page wrote it.
Or there’s this helpful guide.
