My beloved Fannies have a new album Nothing Lasts Forever coming September. I’m delighted. Just two years after Endless Arcade. So hopefully an end to 5/6 year gaps between albums.
Since Jerry left they’ve really upped the workload so maybe it becomes clearer what the tensions were behind him leaving.
New song is a decent enough Norman effort. Not an instant classic methinks. But all the Endless Arcade singles sounded better in the context of the album so I’m quietly confident.
Just wonderful to have them back so quickly.

My all time most seen group. Love them but I really feel they lost a lot when Gerry left. Live especially.
Paul Quinn was a major loss too.
I realise not everyone feels like this. They are still bloody treasures.

Very much agree with this, Gerry’s tunes were always the highlights for me, and the Paul Quinn albums were Imperial Phase Fannies for me. The three Creation Records shows they did just before Gerry left, with each of Brendan, Paul and Francis performing live duty for the albums they drummed on, were perfect evidence for how much a drummer shapes a band’s style, and Paul’s really shone.
I still like the Fannies, and look forward to the album, but perhaps not with the urgency that I used to, and the upcoming tour is the first one I haven’t bothered buying a ticket for. But, hey we’re all growing old and things change.

Gerry Love seems to be doing a fair amount of touring. Anyone been and seen?

New song in video above sounds just fine to me…roll on September!

I’d so love to be blown away by a new Fanclub release but they just sound increasingly flat and lifeless to me now. Such a shame. The last tune of theirs to grab me was the fab Baby Lee in 2010. But even the album that was from, Shadows, overall sounded a bit, well, one dimensional and tired.

Gerry’s songs were generally my favourites and I was gutted when he left, but typical of the Fannies to be so laissez faire about the whole split.
Have seen them live a couple of times since and they are still well worth seeing – which I will be doing again in November.
Last time I saw them it was with Stephen Black stepping in on the bass and no Euros for the night, who was sick. Maybe the circumstances played a part but I thought the guys really stepped up and put on a great show. Gerry’s out and about doing a few shows of his own so hopefully there will be some more Lightships music in the pipeline.

This thread is starting to sound like the quiet beginnings of a backlash…😉
