Following on from the greatest intros thread, it seems appropriate to start a greatest endings thread. I guess a lot of these maybe live recordings. Here is my suggestion, from what is still an underrated live album. Some might say it’s just arranged and drawn out, but I do think it creates some tension at the beginning of the set.

I’ve only just come across this rather lovely blog article by MIke Scott re. spiritual singles in the British charts ’67 – ’71. I think he defines the category very well indeed, so, in whatever term ‘spiritual’ would may apply/resonate with you, why not post up any piece of music from any genre that uplifts you, gives you a feeling of transcendence, or just comforts you like a musical friend in the harder times.

Bit of a crap title I agree. I don’t often dislike a band and then come round to liking them, but recently was converted to a group I hated when I first heard them. Everything Everything. Marc Riley was playing them every night, getting them in for sessions and saying how great they were. I thought, he got this one wrong. A while back I heard one of their tracks and the conversion started. I fully understand how people would find them massively irritating, but I can’t help myself… So, who have you loathed and now love ?

Jack the Biscuit’s thread on Allen Toussaint made me think that it’s been a while since the Afterword visited New Orleans and Louisiana. Time to dust off a few old favourites and hopefully discover a few new ones.
Doubtless there’s a lot of local talent that never gets much exposure outside of the states. And what about all those artists from other parts of the USA and elsewhere who move to the bayou?
Along with the big names, I’d like to hear about the lesser known and less obvious ones. Professor Shorthair, the Neville Sisters and the Mild Magnolias?
I won’t complain if we get some unexpected genres either. Are there any cajun prog bands? What’s happening on the metal scene in Baton Rouge? Which reggae bands are getting them irie in Lake Charles?
I know that I can rely on some interesting posts when the gumbo-guzzling true detectives of the AW are on the case.

Fans of Bob Dylan and music in general might like this show from earlier today on Radio 4, where musician/satirist Mitch Benn spends half an hour discussing Bob’s effect on songwriting, singing and being a Rock Star. It’s very funny, entertaining, and edumakational – what more do you want? Next week he does a similar thing for Bowie called Mitch Benn and the Fat Pink Duke.

I have recently watched ‘The wolf of wall street’ on DVD, I thought it was really good & this piece of music played out over the closing credits. I have never heard of this man before, but I have to say that I think this piece of music is utterly gorgeous.

My eagerly awaited cd set of the complete works of Sibelius by Karajan arrived today, and when checking the cds/packaging etc, it hit me there and then, staring at me, bewitching me, entrancing me…. God he had nice hair ! Wow. What a cool mane the dude rocked !

After the disappointment of what was season 2 of True Detective I was casting round for a show the GLW and I could watch together. Now, let me explain, there are my shows such as The Walking Dead and her shows such as Blue Bloods and like a Venn diagram there are shows where we intersect. There are a small number of shows which fit this space, such as The West Wing, House of Cards, Justified and Season 1 of True Detective. Season 2 just did not cut the mustard. One of my sons recommended Ray Donovan and we decided to give it a go. What can I say, hook, line and sinker. It is a cracker. Great complex characters and adult themes. Not quiet the Sopranos but definitely up there. We have just finished Season 1 in 2 weeks. Great actors including Brit Eddie Marsan as well as probably one of the best characters I’ve seen in a long time Jon Voight as twisted,evil, funny, charming pater familias Mickey Donovan – Boston, Southie bad boy – an absolute joy. If you’ve missed it – 1st 2 Seasons on Sky catchup. Do give it a go.

There is a magazine called Glamour. Alas, not a bible for all things Marc Bolan and The Sweet but a magazine for Women. Said magazine recently ran a piece entitled ’13 Little Things That Can Make Men Fall Hard for You’. I’d imagined a stray foot from a Word Bird at the top of a flight of concrete stairs or a quick shove in the back on an ungritted icy pavement would do the trick until Ma Bisto explained that this was an advice list for women looking to go the extra mile to keep their man happy. Or the dating equivalent of Viz’s Top Tips. Apparently the list has made many despair at its insistence on putting the onus on women to revert to a 1950’s level of submissiveness. Ma Bisto and I decided to try out all 13 of the ‘Little Things’ to see if I would fall hard or simply collapse flaccid.
It’s yet another murky, bedzrizzled morning in what’s turning out to be a frightful rotter of a month. Ah well… there’s always FREE JAZZ !

Yes, I still buy CDs. I used to get them mostly from (yes, those nasty tax dodgers, with a nice easy to use website, sorry ) Amazon. They seem to have put their CD prices up massively recently, most seem to be ten or eleven quid. Any recommendations for an alternative on line outlet ?
I’m very seriously thinking of taking a step back from my career and trying to focus more on what I love – family, music, reading and writing. Essentially becoming a househusband with a day job that provides pocket money, rather than a career man.

Going through a challenging time in my marriage right now.
Found more home-truth wisdom in this, at first sight, stereotypically Victor Kiam site than anywhere.
When you say, “You’re the only one that I can love, you’re the only one that I can be happy with, you’re the only one,” you’re really saying, “I’m a pea-brain. I can’t really see that the world is full of beautiful women or good looking men. I can’t see that. I don’t have any confidence at all. Don’t you want me?”
No, they don’t.
“I have no self-esteem, no nothing. Don’t you want me?”
And the answer is no.
And – understand the difference between ‘needing’ something – such as for you and your spouse to stay together – and simply desiring it. Clue – the latter is the healthy answer.
He uses the principle of jujitsu (other spellings are available) – basically ‘manipulating the opponent’s force against himself rather than confronting it with one’s own force’.
Just diamond-hard advice. Only read it tonight but instinctively it seems true.

Just returned from the Brecon Beacons and my 5th Green Man.
Inevitably familiarity tends to a slightly jaded view, but the bill of Super Furries, Television, Public Service Broadcasting, Matthew E White, Courtney Barnett, William Onyeabor’s Atomic Bomb, Rob Newman, Adam Buxton, Natalie Prass, Hookworms and Goat, all personal highlights, was pretty damned good. St Vincent and Calexico were the other headliners whom I caught, but I drew the line at Hot Chip…..sorry to everyone who is a fan.
There were also plenty of interesting films conversations with a bunch of interesting writers and millions of things for kids to do
The weather wasn’t as kind as it has been, but the site was always pretty busy.
Good food, decent beers / ciders.

My friend Jim Maving is the guitarist in Case Hardin. Now, Americana very much isn’t my thing most of the time, but there’s a fun swagger and boogie to Case Hardin, and in any case, even if I didn’t like them, I’d big them up for Jim, because he’s an absolute diamond. But I do – I really like them, and not only is Jim literally the best guitar player I’ve ever known in real life, Pete Gow has a really good way with a lyric.
They’ve got a new record coming out. This is the new single from it. I like it a lot.
