Pop Quiz returned on Sunday night at 7.30 on BBC 4.
Looking at the schedules it seems as it’s going to be regular for the foreseeable future.
Last night’s episode was from 1983 and featured George Michael,Haxel O’Connor with team captain Simon Kirke against Bill Bruford,Buster Bloodvessel with captain by Jools Holland.
An enjoyable 30 mins and some great archive clips.

I used to run a Pop Quiz in a pub every Sunday night and even though I say it myself it was better than that rubbish on the BBC. 😎
Did you do any questions about Wet leg?
SteveT, why on earth would I ask a question about you pissing in your pants? 😂💥🤣
You are a ray of sunshine aren’t you? Personally I used to love Pop Quiz in the Saturday tea time slot. Can almost taste the food I was eating when watching it. Saw some great, then rare, clips on it like Stones doing a live version of Brown Sugar in a TV show
You talking to me?
No he is chewing a brick. Of course he is talking to you. You little ray of sunshine 😀😀
Not dried your keks out yet?
I quite enjoyed Pop Quiz Sometimes you’d get gnarled old rocker who might be as old as 35 playing alongside a 19 year old fey, floppy-fringed fop and they argue about Wombles songs.
…a bit like The AfterWord…
..but with 19 year old fey, floppy-fringed fops instead of baldy-bonced ’50s dodgers..
Hurrah!
Essential viewing to 15 year old me. And 40 years later, it’s now on series record…
Could this be because Pop Master is coming to More4?
Hmmmm!
April 1983? I might stand a chance of getting some questions answered correctly.
June 2023? I have no chance.
Me too
Couple of points.
One alluded to above with relatively “mature /cred” rock stars appearing.
Last night for example Bill Bruford and Simon Kirke. I wonder what to the discussion with the manger was like persuading to go on. I saw an edition on YouTube with Robert Plant.
Another priceless sight (of its era) was Cozy Powell puffing on a gasper all through the programme.
I just wish they could turn down the audience caterwauling as I desperately compete with the teams in my little retro world. I generally take to the ones who genuinely seem to have an interest in music as reflected in their answers.
Same with musicians or actors etc who still follow childhood team get worked up on a Saturday when they team is playing a match. No time for ELO but when I heard in the 70s they used to rig up a Saturday afternoon transatlantic call with someone the other end with the phone clamped next to the radio listening to the Birmingham match. They’re just like us! Being in a mood due to a the unfortunate Tarantini scoring a late own goal.
I wouldn’t describe Once Upon A Time In Hollywood as ‘a late own goal’…oh. 😉
😂
In Elton John’s book he describes how he met David Furnish for the first time when he organised a dinner party at his house to cheer him up as he was kicking around at home in a foul mood because Watford lost to West Brom.
@Leem you just brought back memories.. Following the brilliant world cup in Argentina Spurs bought Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Vila. Not to miss out on the act Blues decided to buy Alberto Tarantino. His home debut was against the enemy Aston Villa. In the warm up before the game the Villa fans started chanting ‘Tarantini what a wanker, what a wanker’. His English obviously was a work in progress as he applauded them for singing his name. It was hilarious and the most memorable part of his time in Birmingham.
Yes. Not a Birmingham City fan myself (Leicester), but I have vivid memories of Hugh Johns commentating on this exotic addition to the Division one landscape. As you say, it was really the first influx following the World Cup. I recall he was rubbish. ,Checking on Wikipedia.
“His spell in England was overshadowed by poor discipline, with Tarantini flattening Manchester United defender Brian Greenhoff, and ending his 23-game spell in Birmingham by wading into the crowd to punch a heckler.” Classic!
Tarantini at Birmingham, Sabella at Sheffield United, and Ossie Ardiles & Ricky Villa at Spurs. The first Argentinian Invasion?
Sheffield United wanted to sign Maradona but was too expensive, so opted for Sabella instead
Hmmm, his World Cup Winner’s medal would suggest that he wasn’t *that* rubbish…
…… and Tarantini was married to fashion model Patricia Pata Villanueva. So whilst he may not have lit up the Bull Ring he outstrips my achievements.
Cue “Oh the dire wasn’t that bad” comments, but me and my wife watched about ten episodes on You Tube not so long ago at her suggestion – in one evening!
I was sniffy (must have had a bad day, as I luv the dire) … but do you know what? they were great … and everyone came out of it well.
Mike Read was less formal than I remembered, the young pop stars less awkward, the older pop stars more convivial.
Also, a really great questions and clips. Dire-tastic.
I agree. I just watched the episode just out on Iplayer and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Some close to the bone moments as well, with a couple of mentions on Jonathan King, and Hazel O’connor suppressing a sneaky swear word just on time at one point.
Buster Bloodvessel seemed quite a gentle, polite chap as well, away from his stage persona.
Just looked up everyone’s ages at the time of filming
George was 20
Buster and Jools were both 25
Hazel was 29
Simon ans Bill were the oldest both an ancient 34!!
