But plans fell through. So I treated myself to Dad’s Army, the episode with the captured German submariners which you’ll know for the “Don’t tell him Pike!” Quote. Almost as ubiquitous as Fork Handles.
Anyhow, the performance of the actor who played the Submarine Captain was a tour de force. A swaggering cock sure but comedic performance. Step forward one Philip Madoc. You nailed it, and some. Married to Ruth Madoc apparently.
So, I might have not got my rare night out but still, little victories.

But I haven’t got a stitch to wear …
🙂
Welsh actors = the best.
What a lucky coincidence that they have the same surname! 😉
Also worth noting are the contributions of supporting actors in Fawlty Towers – notably Geoffrey Palmer and Bernard Cribbins.
As an aside, the young female Australian guest (who Basil accidentally gropes in full view of Sybil) was the lead singer of 5,000 Volts who had a few hits in the 1970s.
That throwaway comment about who the young female guest in Fawlty Towers was sums up why I like this site and has made my evening! Thanks.
A quick Google revealed that Luan Peters had a long career as an actress appearing in Dr Who. sundry Hammer horror films, Z Cars and much else.

A night in can lead to all manner of unexpected discoveries.
A role in Dr Who was always a feather in your cap in the UK, back in the day. Nowadays it can be a ticket to Hollywood.
Jumanji, the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy: Karen Gillan has come a long way from Inverness.
Karen Gillan’s dad is Ian. Fine set of pipes.
Similarly, Harry Shearer and Alan Shearer are cousins.
You had me fooled there, Freddy. But getting the truth did lead to this.

Lots of interesting stuff about Ms Gillan. I liked the last, probably apocryphal point about how the daleks had to be redesigned because of her height. Billie Piper is only 5’5″ .
If memory serves me correctly, her name was Luan Peters
And she wasn’t actually the singer. The vocal on the record was performed by Tina Charles (who subsequently had hit singles in her own right), but Luan Peters was recruited as eye candy to mime in front of the band for TV appearances.
I feel like the character in “Pictures of Lily.”
Luan Peters is sooooooooooooooo wonderful.
Do they still make beautiful women like Luan Peters?
Is that, genuine question, still a thing?
1) More than 3 decades ago I saw Philip Madoc as Claudius/the ghost of Hamlet’s father in Manchester (Robert Lindsay played the Dane (No, not the Dame, the Dane. Sometimes I think you lot play too much Bowie.))
2) I once saw Ian Lavender in The Clachan pub, behind Liberty’s. As he left someone shouted, ‘Don’t tell him Pike!’ Which made absolutely no sense in context, but he took it in very good spirit.
3) I can’t be the only one who read the headline and expected it to be a follow up to the Moz thread. I was supposed to be going out tonight… but I haven’t got a stitch to wear.
4) 3 was a hit at around the same time I saw Philip Madoc as Claudius … and repeat into infinity.
As a Smiths fan I should have realised this might have caused confusion and consternation.
Sorry.
But I was just enthusing about Philip Madoc’s performance.!
Though
I may go out tomorrow. …
Sorry Hubes, you can’t borrow my coat. Think I’ll be needing it myself.
Thanks Mike
That’ll mean I’m not going to step out in style.
Just don’t neglect to feed that bear!
I wouldn’t bother. If I were you.
I watched Dad’s Army last night too. I have seen that episode a few times before but it’s great every time. When the German captain says to Mannering “and I don’t want soggy chips” – superb.
“Crisp und light brown.”
Or possibly “light braun”.
It’s unclear how good the U-boat commander’s English spelling was 😉
@lunaman
Yep, his whole performance was superb.
He was always good in whatever he did. I particularly remember a tour de force of Al Pacino style scenery chewing in the Tom Baker Doctor Who story The Brain Of Morbius (a not remotely disguised take on the Frankenstein story).
Dad’s Army is pretty much perfection from start to finish. Slight criticism. I never cared for Jones too much. Really over acted. Confess there were many funny scenes featuring him though.
I think his repetition and over acting was what made him funny!
Don’t panic!
