Some uproar in the Indy this morning concerning the attached ‘new’ footage. Don’t know if it’s new or not though I’ve not seen it before.
Does it change our views on John? Would it have been offensive in the 60s? Or is it all just bantz?! Answers on a postcard please!

He’s going to play a non standard set including early solo and Porcupine Tree songs. Seatwave has really good seats at only £35. Sadly I don’t seem to know anyone who wants to go and is free that night. Anyone fancy coming along?

BBC Sportscene Goal of the Season 82/83

Fond memories (well not so much of Champagne Charlie scoring against us but the playground footballer in me always recognised his brilliance) of a team when we could expect to, and usually did, hammer teams from Scandinavia and the Baltics.
But maybe, as with Clyde Shipbuilding, the rest of the world just caught up. No shame in that – just a recalibration of expectations, which began in the aftermath of A****tina ’78 and is still continuing to this day. ‘Surely we should be expected to beat Georgia away?’ – well, who knew but maybe not…
We love all kinds of tunes and tracks but often there’s a particular which gets us in the ear or the heart or the guts. That bit that goes…
Maybe the scream from Won’t Get Fooled Again. Or the horns building in Beyonce’s Crazy In Love. Or the forlorn defiance of the line “Fuck me up” from Ryan Adams’ Come Pick Me Up.
A recent post about David Ruffin reminded me how much I love. love, love the husky falsetto he breaks into at several moments in Walk Away From Love.

Thought the beautiful colours might brighten this grey and rainy day. I’d really recommend a commission if you can afford it; they look wonderful reproduced on screen but it’s even better when you see them on canvas.

Paul Weller has done a Tiny Desk Concert – available as a podcast. I’m not a big fan, but this was probably my favourite thing I’ve heard from him for a decade. He does look rather old though – which probably means I do to. Maybe best to just listen not watch?

Just posted a track from John Cooper Clarke’s Snap Crackle and Bop on the Spoken word thread. On it JCC is backed by the Invisible Girls, an ad hoc group Hannett put together as a backing band for various artists including Pauline Murray.
His right hand man, keyboard player Steve Hopkins explains:
“The idea was to assemble a roster of key instrumental players, produce tracks to be fronted by different singers/stars – and get some hits!”

I love the albums the Girls played on but hadn’t realised that they’d also done a single with Nico. It’s powerful stuff but somehow I suspect the German chanteuse was not invited along to perform it on TOTP.

Regardless of what you think of Cradle To Grave, the TV adaptation of Danny Baker’s life-affirming book Going To Sea In Sieve, it must be said that there are some lovely touches of detail in the show, especially those relating to music.

Apologies for repeating myself..but..
Last night in a local boozer, the Earl Haig Social Club in Crouch End, we held a Stylus Stories event.

The deal is you stick a turntable onstage, have a mike or two and people bring their vinyl along, tell a story as to why the song has some significance and then play it.
Last night we heard about a drunken 16 year old necking a half pint of bacardi, tearing up the dance floor to The Beat’s version of ” Tears of a Clown,” delivering Paul Weller’s child followed by “Going Underground, ” a tale of a disreputable dad preceded Mose Allison’s “Parchman Farm,” a childhood longing to become Baloo the bear was followed by Louis Prima’s ” Buono Sera,” along with half a dozen other really top-notch tales and tunes. I kicked things off with a quick public plug for the wonderful AED records pressings of the Linden albums, by Joe Mcalinden.Two albums of blissful pastoral guitar driven pop.
It’s a very Afterword event and incredibly easy to do in any venue. Works beautifully well with an audience of a certain age and ethanol helps.

I can’t be alone in relishing watching this none-more-combative striker.
Yes, he’s a boo-hiss pantomime villain, but by god wouldn’t most want him in their team? Least of all Arsenal, who could do with a bit more of the Bergkamp about them – outrageously skilled yes, but also adept at the darker arts.
I also tend to agree with the view that Mourinho took a large step towards winning yesterday’s battle when he waited for Wenger, who appeared from the tunnel some time after everyone else, and offered his hand.
Then when Wenger waited for the ref, in vain, at half-time, you also felt that Arsenal were not in control of things as they may have been in other eras.
I hold my hand up and freely admit to being a huge fan of Mourinho, and, to a lesser extent, Costa (the Roy Keane to his Alex Ferguson).
I predict it’s going to be a hell of a season (in a good way ;-))

Very strong first outing today for the new Dr Who episodes.
Don’t want to spoil it – but this song is referenced by the brilliant Missy character and a dalek commands “maximum extermination”. Some other very, very cool bits too.

One day champions!
Previous commitments meant I couldn’t make it Lords, but I’ve had an eye on the live text all day. At half past five we looked dead and buried, by five past six we’d won. I bloody love cricket.
