There’s a Kindle Daily Deal offer on today, of Dylan’s book ‘The Philosophy Of Modern Song’. I’m sure it will be of interest to some of us.
Nobody tells it quite like Dylan…
“With X, you didn’t know if you were listening to mariachi or opera. He kept you on your toes. With him, it was all about fat and blood. He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop. After ‘X’ he was now singing his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. He sang like a professional criminal . . . His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttering to yourself something like, ‘Man, I don’t believe it’. – Bob Dylan
So who’s he talking about?
Cairngorm Skyline
According to *cough* Country Life jointly owned by Bob Dylan (The “legendary singer-songwriter”) and his brother. I know that His Bobness surpasses all understanding but this perplexed me. My immediate reaction was to wonder how much time he’s spent there . . .

Covers that are better than Dylan’s original
Earlier today, I offered the view, in a private WhatsApp group, that I could only think of 2 cover versions of Bob Dylan songs that I prefer to his versions. And they are Hendrix’s version of All Along The Watchtower and The Byrds’ version of Mr Tambourine Man. I’ve since remembered that George Harrison’s If Not For You also ticks the box. I’ve tried to find the comprehensive views of the Massive on the subject but failed. Maybe I used the wrong search terms. Anyway, I thought I’d start a thread and see what comes back.
Obviously, there’s potential for contention here. I’m a fan of Bob and I enjoy listening to him sing. Other opinions are available and I hope that this won’t descend into name-calling. Let’s disagree agreeably if we can.
I’d suggest that songs Bob hasn’t released (or released in English when the cover is in another language) shouldn’t really count. So that rules out Fairport Convention’s Si Tu Dois Partir and Joan Baez’s Love Is Just A Four Letter Word, both of which I love. Indeed, I love most of Baez’s Any Day Now album of covers but, when push comes to shove, I’d take » Continue Reading.
Shadow Kingdom
No way I’m brave enough to review a Dylan album. But bloody hell it’s good. Having missed the film my flabber is well and truly gasted.
What the Dylan deal means………sort of
Some explanation here:

Take a Moment. Sit, take a breath and listen. This is beautiful.
I stumbled upon this review on Sunday. I don’t mind some of Diana Krall’s stuff, but would never seek it out. This short review piqued my interest and I clicked on the video embedded in the article . Then I popped over to Spotify to hear some more and this track grabbed me. I then discovered it was written by Dylan. So, there is a lot to enjoy if any of this is up your street, and should you be so inclined, please share something beautiful.

Play along with Bob
Wow, don’t know how long this has been up but it’s fascinating. The “stems’ (21st century word for “tracks”) from Like A Rolling Stone – Bob’s vocal, guitar and harmonica on one, drums and organ on another, another guitar on the next one and finally bass and piano. The latter is intriguing – they are just NOT TOGETHER! But as with so many of these things, once you hear the whole mix it is of course brilliant. The piano is quite low in the final mix but it’s there.
I’ve heard a few of these things – there are Fabs examples all over the internet. At the Rolling Stones exhibition a few years ago there were, from memory, 8 songs you could listen to, and the two things that stood out for me were, first of all Nick Hopkins’ piano (on I think Angie) – he had such a beautiful melodic sense and his sense of time and rhythm was immaculate. The other one that was a surprise was Start Me Up – Mick Jagger’s solo vocal is full of spit and mutterings that most engineers would get rid of these days.
Anyway, I’m off to, er, play a decent » Continue Reading.
D A Pennebaker has finished his last reel
Sad news, but in fairness he enjoyed an extended Director’s Cut of a life. And he has left us a great legacy of iconic, groundbreaking films. Only last week I was able to enjoy the unearthed footage he shot of Marianne and Leonard in their Hydra idyll, which forms a major part of Nick Broomfield’s wonderful, elegaic film.
Dylan bollocks
During a day trip to Rye at the weekend I found a 1965 mono first pressing of Highway 61 for the princely sum of a fiver. Then Bloomsbury emailed about a new Dylan book and I thought it might be right up my street, until I clicked on the link and got a migraine.

Storm Dylan is on its way!
Well, it will be whenever the next batch of stormy weather worthy of a name reaches the UK. These things are alphabetical, and the Met Office have decreed that the fourth storm of the year is to be called Storm Dylan.
We’ll be looking for Shelter from the Storm, hoping that it doesn’t turn into a Hurricane, locally there might be a Tempest, garden furniture will be Blowing in the Wind …. Over to you.

A left handed query.
I read recently that Bob Dylan is left handed, I had not come across this before. I checked the previous left handed post and posted my query there, there was no answer forthcoming so I thought I’d make a separate request for information here. Can anyone confirm this?
The Beano band backs Bob
Apparently the support act for His Bobness’ famous UK tour in 1965 was John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. There was an outtake from Don’t Look Back posted a couple of days ago on YouTube which of course Dylan’s folks had taken down.
But here’s another glimpse into that time – Bob on the radio, playing a song live and, as the notes say, getting chastised for “not knowing how to play with a group” and stuffing up the count-in.
Baby let me follow you down, indeed.
@Johnny-Concheroo where are you?
Dylanologists ahoy
I don’t quite have the energy to make my way through all of this right now, but others may be made of sterner stuff.
It’s a forensic examination (making full use of Google Earth) of what Dylan says he’s up to with his art (not everybody round here is a fan, IIRC) – the jokes, the references, the misleadings, etc. Give it a read.
I won’t post a picture, although the guy seems to have helped himself pretty comprehensively.

Dylan Sydney 1966 double LP
Ozzie Bob fans might like to know that a vinyl version of the Sydney date from the big 1966 set is chalked in for December the 2nd. I think it’s to be released worldwide too, as there are placeholder listings on various amazon sites, but I’ve included the link for JB HiFi. There may be one or two of you who find this of interest, hopefully!

A Massive Review of Dylan 1966 Live Recordings
*thwack*
That is the sound of a gauntlet being thrown to the floor. I would ask any fellow nutcases to join me in reviewing individual nights from the 36 CD box set. Don’t cheat and do Manchester. I’ll kick us off with Paris 24th May 1966 (CDs 26&27)
There are a few reasons why I picked to listen to this show first. Not only because it’s one that hasn’t escaped in any form before now but cos it was played on his 25th birthday after a week of being battered by British audiences. With a whirlwind of boos and catcalls following him across the channel, performing this show in front of a 50ft Stars and Stripes flag may have been asking for trouble.
Listening to the show is fascinating as it appears that the acoustic set is where all the drama happens for a change. Dylan appears to have walked onstage with a guitar which is out of tune and spends a good section of the set retuning it. First he deals with this with sardonic humour – “my electric guitar never goes out of tune” but then as the audience start getting restless and heckling he » Continue Reading.

Service
The recent news of the retirement of Hannah and Tim as admins reminded me of a little nonsense I posted sometime ago that gave rise to the only time I ever had dealings with either of them. It was Hannah who helped me out.
I’d posted a photo, in which you could clearly see the name of a person and the address at which that person worked. Soon after posting it, it occurred to me there might be a data protection issue and I asked the admins to blitz the post, which Hannah kindly did.
However, as I continue to be amused by this very slight thing and, as I said, was reminded of it the other day, I have decided to resurrect it, but I have done some work on the image, so you can now only make out the name.
So, here goes ….
I went into a [….] shop in [….] and, having bought a number of [….]s, looked at the receipt (see illustration) and, noticing the name of the cashier, thought to myself, “Well, you gotta serve somebody.” and walked out.

On Caring
I read with interest the two recent ‘Beatles’ threads and the playful dispute between HPS and Johnny C. One of the more intense moments (though still playful, I think) was the remark from HP about caring: ‘who cares’. The obvious rejoinder was issued: clearly HPS did and does. It is always fascinating (to me, at least) about why we care about these matters. I have rarely posted here; I used to do a little at the old place and I had a habit of making negative remarks about the Australian cult band The Go-Betweens; I did so partly out of bewilderment about intensity of the love for the GOBs and the intensity of my own dislike. My dislike reached fever pitch when Robert Forster was a guest on the Podcast and delivered one of the most embarrassingly inept performances I had ever heard from a highly regarded professional (tuneless non-singing, the most rudimentary guitar playing and bad lyrics). My post about this certainly resonated with some and before long the standard complaints were out: it was ‘my opinion’ and that ‘there are more important things’.
I have wondered about this notion of importance for a while. People who speak » Continue Reading.

Madhouse On Castle Street
Bob Dylan performing Girl From The North Country in Madhouse On Castle Street. Anyone else seen this? The page it’s posted on is dated 2012 and says ‘Enjoy this rare video while you still can because youtube removed it already.’ Have I not been paying attention?

has your latest Dylan bootleg series arrived yet
Mrs Wells advises mine has arrived- annoyingly as she and it are in Melbourne and I am in Sydney.
But tomorrow night woo hoo.
Anyone else’s arrived and which version did you get?
am i wrong? AM I WRONG?!
Why did The Clash bother to record a version of Dylan’s “The Man in Me” ??? Dylan’s version sounds more like The Clash than does The Clash’s version.
Money Doesn’t Talk It Swears – Dylan Bootleg Series 12
Out in early November in 2CD / 6 CD and 18CD editions – the cream, the trifle or the 18 course banquet with wafer thin mint of Zimmy’s 1965-1966 studio & I assume some live adventures.
I can see myself buying the 6 CD and “downloading” the 18 unless its really reasonable price. Which it won’t be. The full set is just a “copyright extension” kind of release I’m guessing
