Anybody come across Walter Martin before? Very droll and goofy, and gives a slight impression of making it up as he goes along. School of Jonathan Richman, I guess. His first number, I Went Along on a Solo Australian Tour, is helped along by a barbershop quartet, naturally. He’s a former member of the Walkmen, who have passed me by, I have to say.
Give him a burl, as they say round here.

Anyone else heard this guy? My son recommended him via this link – from NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.
Ultra funky four piece band, brilliant playing, GOOD SONGS, especially “Heart Don’t Stand A Chance” which starts at 3.44
He started playing drums in the church (familiar story) – and here’s something he said about his background from Wikipedia – “My little sister and I went out front, and my pops was on top of my mom. There was blood in the street. He was arrested, and that was the last time I saw him. I think he did 14 years.”

I know we have mixed feelings about lists here, but this one is quite interesting. National Public Radio in the US have compiled their choice of the best 150 albums made by women since 1964. I reckon I own about 20 of them, have heard maybe another 20 and there are plenty I’ve never heard and a fair few by artists I’ve never heard of. As I type I’m listening to Deep Listening by Pauline Oliveros, someone I’d never heard of until about 15 minutes ago.
Some are obvious. Some are WTF is that doing there? Some are bloody marvellous and as indicated above some are completely unknown.
Have a browse. In the words of the late Mrs Merton “Let’s have a heated debate”. NPR’s 150 greatest albums by women since 1964

I don’t know if anyone has come across these before, but I found an NPR Tiny Desk Concert on YouTube this evening and they are great.
They are just three or four song acoustic sets played in NPR’s offices. There are loads by people I have heard of (Pixies, Billy Bragg, Wilco, Death Cab For Cutie, Natalie Merchant) and many I haven’t.
If I’ve done this properly, this post should include Lyle Lovett, which IMO is sublime.

NPR are streaming an hour-plus sampler from the deluxe edition of the upcoming Best of the Cutting Edge: Bootleg Series Vol. 12, a week ahead of release.
Paul Weller has done a Tiny Desk Concert – available as a podcast. I’m not a big fan, but this was probably my favourite thing I’ve heard from him for a decade. He does look rather old though – which probably means I do to. Maybe best to just listen not watch?
