Gosh, that’s awful news. What a nice guy he always came across as, a proper ‘diamond geezer’. They have two young kids too. I can’t think of him without seeing him smiling. Condolences indeed.
Shit, that’s terrible news. His bass lines on that debut album were worth the admission price alone. Was rather looking forward to his spoken word tour. Condolences to his family and his two young sons.
That is awful news, he was on Rockonteurs a few weeks ago & was fantastic.
I have played in a few covers bands over the years & I always loved playing I Am The Resurrection, it is a wonderful bassline, but I could never get it as he does!
RIP Mani
Let us not forget his tenure with Primal Scream.
What appeared on the face of it an unlikely move, he set his stall out early
Kowalski (from Vanishing Point)
A close second to my favourite Primal Scream album, this was always on the cassette player in the old VW Golf as I chugged round the lanes of Essex in the late 90s. Its strength was the mechanical volume that made itself heard over the engine of the old banger I was in, no little thanks to Mani’s bass.
Oh God, that’s awful news.
Loved by everyone I’d say.
Primal Scream with him and Kevin Shields, live at Hammersmith Palais – one of the best gigs and certainly the loudest.
I can’t pretend I know much about the bass. But I’ve just listened to that debut album straight through for the first time in a long time, twice. It is, and he was, brilliant. Well played Mani. RIP.
This really has hit hard, I’m absolutely gutted. The Roses came along just at the right time, when I was about 16, the lodestars for and me and my gang. So many memories have come flooding back this evening. What a character, and listening back to those two Roses albums, what a damn fine player.
Mani was my favourite of the Roses because while all of the other members can be difficult in their own ways, he clearly just loved being a member of the band. He might have been the world’s biggest Stone Roses fan.
This clip from the Made of Stone film is gold. And you can see him periodically grinning all the way through it, because he’s bloody loving the sound they’re making. RIP Mani.
That’s a terrible shock. He came across so well on Rockonteurs and said he was getting in a better place after struggling following the death of his wife. He had also just announced a huge speaking tour for next autumn. He had 12 year old twins. So sad
That’s such sad news. He always came across as irrepressible – both in bass lines and in his attitude to life. He made the world a sublimely funkier place. And terrible for his poor kids.
That’s amazing, and I speak as one who has never paid much attention to the Stone Roses. Props to the bass player for keeping it going all that time. mikethep
Almost exactly a month ago, from Chrisf’s Fools Gold post – prompting a half hamper of fond memories and typical AW meanderings. The Stone Roses were a fixture of rock architecture, always there, until now.
It’s great funk bass on a track that really marks for me their position on the forward slash of indie/dance. It took me a long time to realize how the bass is the heart of music. The unnoticed rhythm, the underpinning of a great song, the part that really connects at a body level, On Fools Gold, it’s prominent, but on my favourite Roses track, it’s omnipresent, yet unobtrusive.
Evident towards the beginning. but then slipping down below the dominant drums and guitar, it rumbles away, echoing Brown’s low mixed vocals, a reverberating harmonious foundation from which the other instrments and triumphalist expectant vocals all explode out.

Very sad news….think his wife passed around this time last year.
Terrible news he was a very lovely man too
Agree with all the comments here. Loved playing along to the debut Stone Roses album too.

What a lovely bloke. He’ll be much missed round here.
In addition to the usual suspect Roses and Primals tracks, he played on this from Byron Ferrari (as did Flea!)

Reading that again I really should have started the last sentence with out the And.
Sad, sad news

A beautiful sound. RIP
