They lost me at “just 48 hours after he dropped a 45 minute visual album…”.
Is there anything more off-putting than a high concept bit of Social Media/Viral clickbait whatever it is they call it these days? No matter if it’s this guy, Radiohead, Rhianna, Bon Iver or whoever- Nobody apart from journalists is remotely interested for more than 5 minutes before the next ‘surprise’ comes along. I’m bored of surprises. Stop trying to surprise me.
You got some songs? Just put a fucking record out and we’ll decide if it’s any good.
Er… He did. “Just 48 hours after” (faster than that, in fact) And they say kids today have no patience. .
It’s been speculated in articles such as this http://uk.complex.com/music/2016/08/frank-ocean-leaving-def-jam
that Endless was the equivalent of an old double live contractual obligation release.
Alternatively, Frankie’s DIY video is just the more easily ignored equivalent of floating a 50 ft tall statue of himself down the Thames.
I agree with KDH that listening to Blonde is not a chore at all, although I’ve played it through several times and thus far it keeps floating right through the butterfly net of my brain, so actually pinning it down for evaluation may be hard work (just me, maybe?).
Have to say I haven’t found the album hard work at all – the melodies, production, and of course the voice, all prevent it from getting too self-indulgent. It’s worth remembering that Ocean hails from the Odd Future stable, that brought us Tyler, The Creator and a very entertaining thread on the old site, so in that context it’s perhaps not surprising that he hasn’t gone all Justin Timberlake*.
This lovely thing is one of the more accessible moments from Blond: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzyM3iZfHQ8
*not dissing the Timberlake.
This is the latest missive I’ve seen about Frank Ocean in the last couple of weeks and each one has talked about him as if he’s a big star and we’ve all been waiting ages for this album. I know I occasionally stay under my rock for extended periods but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him before but he’s being treated like a household name. This is a bit weird.
I wonder who actually reads reviews anymore? Stream it and make your own mind up. Even if I did read them, call me a terrible old stick in the mud but I certainly wouldn’t be reading anything by someone calling themselves “Tim Jonze”. Grow up, FFS.
Sounds like hard work. Can’t-be-arsedness will prevent me from hearing it.
Did you see there’s a new Jamie T coming out, birthday boy?

Bravo!

“Video…. terminated”.
Hasta la vista, baby.

Frank Ocean – Pink & White
I thought this thread was going to be about how this
http://thequietus.com/articles/20699-library-music-kpm
suddenly turned up as this
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/aug/23/grandstand-countdown-ski-sunday-unsung-composers-tvs-greatest-theme-tunes
(The Quietus one is worth reading BTW)
There was just now a bit on Radio 4 on the KPM guys.
Have read those articles. Both great, but the more in-depth Quietus one is better.

I was thinking exactly this!
Seems when I post on my tablet the links don’t come out as links so here goes
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/aug/25/frank-ocean-blonde-review-a-baffling-and-brilliant-five-star-triumph
ps mini – I’ve listened to the Jamie T single a couple of times now and am rather underwhelmed
In an OP the links need to go in the required fields (although they did appear as live links in the Updates view).
Ah, too many birthday drinks methinks…

I will be buying the Frank Ocean album tho’.
