My wife’s family name was Fritz her father was in the British Army and served under the name Fritz. After the war he couldn’t get a job because of his name so changed it.
German familiar form of masc. proper name Friedrich; as a characteristic name for a German attested by 1883; very common in World War I. Phrase on the fritz “inoperative, not working properly” (1903) is American English slang, of unknown connection to the name; the earliest references suggest a theatrical origin.
It’s quiet out here in the park in the distance I can hear lots of swearing and is that a putter flying through the air? Nah 🪕 it’s just someone getting banjoed
I’ve chosen my 13 starter words already and at random just to see what happens. Three have double letters, three have a single vowel. Yes I do have a girlfriend … why do you ask?
That’s my fourth birdle in a row since the competition ended. It points to a psychological weakness in the combat arena. Not unlike my history in real-life golf then.
I chose the first five letter words I came across. So far I’ve had funny, anger, spite, spoke and given – not sure I’d have deliberately chosen any. I tend to go for words with three vowels.
I use the first word that comes into my head but sometimes there’s nothing there so I leave it for 5-10 minutes get another coffee it’s just luck sometimes good sometimes bad
Nah, statistically speaking if you are after success Random is not the way to go.
“The best starter word for Wordle is debatable, but top contenders based on letter frequency and strategy are CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, and SALET. These words contain common letters like E, A, R, and T, and some also include common vowels, allowing you to quickly gather information about the target word’s letters and their positions. Other popular and effective strategies include using words with multiple vowels, like ADIEU, or other common words like STARE”.
Such ‘safe’ starters by no means guarantee you won’t fail (or nearly fail – see Leedsboy the other day) but over time they will succeed far more often than completely Random.
It’s Statistics , plain and simple.
When I say random obviously I am going to use words with multiple vowels. However the other day for example I used CAUSE as a starter and it scored Nada. Could easily use the same word the next day for Scare as an answer. As an opening word that would have scored one letter in the right place and 3 right letters in the wrong place.,The chance of an eagle o a birdie would be significantly higher. That is why I maintain the opening gambit is still luck.

No disputing the opening Word is 98.73% luck. That takes nothing away from the fact that using a safe starter in the long run will always average a lower score than a random starter.
Don’t know how long your experiment went on but during that time unless Mrs Wordle decided to only choose words with unusual letters (which she plainly hasn’t done before) then statistical logic dictates an average score will in the long run be lower with a safe starter. The data will always contain anomalies, blind luck, 6 birdies in a row, somebody must win the lottery etc. I think you are using STARE these days and you’ve been doing pretty darn well , haven’t you?

It’s a word that I remember my mother using, which would make it a Caledonianism.
First used in America in 1903
Take that, Fritz! says Tommy
Apparently in the US it’s a term of endearment rather than some World War slur (see above)

My mother used it to denote something was broken.
It’d be interesting how she came across its use.
Got stuck on line 3, completely forgot about it, went back 12 hours later and bingo! It leapt out at me.

I chose the first five letter words I came across. So far I’ve had funny, anger, spite, spoke and given – not sure I’d have deliberately chosen any. I tend to go for words with three vowels.

When I say random obviously I am going to use words with multiple vowels. However the other day for example I used CAUSE as a starter and it scored Nada. Could easily use the same word the next day for Scare as an answer. As an opening word that would have scored on letter in the right place and 3 right letters in the wrong place.,The chance of an eagle o a birdie would be significantly higher. That is why I maintain the opening gambit is still luck.
No disputing the opening Word is 98.73% luck. That takes nothing away from the fact that using a safe starter in the long run will always average a lower score than a random starter.
Will it though? I experimented with random words in the Wordle archive, and my average was exactly the same. (This was not a scientific experiment,)
I might be…
