back in the mid to late 80s a friend of mine with a serious hifi habit had a thing for PROPAGANDA.
he was one of the first CD owners I knew….a proper “early adapter”…if you will.
his demo disc of choice was a album by the above.
a horn produced all singing, all dancing, all digital from front to back speaker buster.
as I recall it was the first….and only disc I can recall having copius recording notes even down to specific points on the playlist where noise and digital artifacts could be heard.
Two things stand out with Trevor Horn – melody and always a fantastic bass sound, regardless of whether or not it’s real or electronic. No surprise he’s worked so much with Norman Watt-Roy down the years.
Two Tribes – that irresistible adrenaline rush towards a vision of the apocalypse that seemed highly probable at the time and remarkably prescient today.
Agreed but Relax was so thrilling and to think he created that from the snippet we all saw on The Tube. A rag tag bunch of scouse scallies with a charismatic lead singer with a strange noise of a song and be fore we knew it BANG! there was Relax. In fact the whole of “Pleasuredome” is a masterpiece of production, image, sound and 80’s.
A bit obscure but this is a band called Captain from 2006 and I’d completely forgotten Trevor Horn produced it – one of the great lost bands of relatively recent times – go and find ‘This is Hazelville’ it’s magnificent – up there with Prefab Sprout’s Steve McQueen – they were on EMI and there is a lost 2nd LP which is still shelved with whoever owns EMI’s catalogue now – which is a travesty. Saw them live a couple of times and they were utterly wonderful – if there’s an early 00s Nuggets comp they’ll feature heavily https://itun.es/gb/S1ouP?i=693169521
In circumstances too boring to relate here, I spent half an hour chatting to Mr Horn at what we can now call the-turn-of-the-century… his favourite album at the time was the Cocteau’s “Heaven Or Las Vegas”…
Anyway, I could happily post a dozen great TH productions here, but will give some other posters some room… I’ll settle for “Slave To The Rhythm”, still fantastic after all these years, and also a good candidate for the recent “sounds great on headphones” thread…
The “bleeding obvious” answer is ABC and the album Lexicon Of Love.
So, never on to avoid the obvious:
Yep. An absolute meisterwerk.
A literal thread answer here.
See, i was immediately drawn to Derek and Clive’s masterwork, but thought better of it.

I HATED IT.
FISH.
Ah those sleeve notes would almost certainly have been the work of the Stockport Sartre – Paul Morley 😉
You must be referring to the album A Secret Wish.
I’ve just listened to this track, to see if I still like it, and by jingo, I do!!!!
Here’s Dr Mabuse
Many other mixes were (possibly/probably still are) available.
The music can be enjoyed without recourse to Morley.
I love that but THE Propaganda track is Duel and it must be the 8 minute remix. It’s proper name and link eludes me right now but I’ll post in a while
It is perfect in every sense and still Horny, of course
Are you thinking of the Duel/Jewelled remix?
If so, it are brilliant.
Now you see that one is a bit too messy for me.

This was also the work of the Specmeister
Belle and Sebastian – I’m A Cuckoo
Owner of a Lonely Heart
Yes!
Two Tribes – that irresistible adrenaline rush towards a vision of the apocalypse that seemed highly probable at the time and remarkably prescient today.
This is the one: in particular, the Annihilation Mix.
(“Oh yeah, well ‘ard!”)

I think I must be the only person in the world who bought the Das Psych-oh Rangers EP.
