I haven’t watched the new series of Top Gear, because I’m like nearly everyone else in that Chris Evans introduces the taste of my own vomit into the procedings a little bit. But I’ve watched Extra Gear, and they (you know, “they”) should give Rory Reid the full-time job. Likeable, easy charm, light touch, not too gobby … just what the show needs.
Or he should be PM. Either, really.
There’s a great review of both shows in the latest Private Eye.
Sample line:
“…Evans is a multimillionaire collector of luxury vehicles. Discussing Lamborghinis with guest Gordon Ramsay, he asked “What’s yours?” – one smug owner to another.”
As you say, Extra Gear comes off much better and receives a far kinder review.
I haven’t watched the new series ofTop Gear because cars.
I find the subject too dull even to space my disdain correctly 🙁
The interaction between the three ex-presenters is what kept us all watching. The cars were almost incidental. With new Topgear the lack of chemistry between the hosts puts the spotlight back on the cars. Boring!
I never watched the original Top Gear because the three ex-presenters.
I’m a real ray of sunshine this morning, I know.
Yes, yes, yes. But look! I’m not talking about Top Gear. I’m talking about the add-on show-ette called Extra Gear. It doesn’t have Matt or Chris or any other of the irritating high-profile presenters. That’s what I’m talking about. In particular the presenter called Rory Reid, who’s very good at it.
I know you’re all poleaxed by Brexit, but can you get with the programme? The one I’m talking about? Eh? Make an effort for fuck’s sake. What a shower.
Sorry, @h-p-saucecraft. My first comment was in response to your first line, my second in response to @goodfella‘s.
I haven’t watched Extra Gear because cars.
Yes, poleaxed.
Yes, yes, Extra Gear is better than Top Gear. But that doesn’t matter because the parent show makes untold millions of overseas dollars for the BBC, while the more watchable Extra Gear will only appeal to your typical BBC2 audience.
Everyone else wants to see Ginger Bollocks driving unfeasibly expensive supercars and yelling “Wow! This is really, really, fast!” every five minutes. Meanwhile they will guffaw into their Special Brew as Matt LeBlanc pretends to not to know where Birmingham is. Again.
And how they will chortle uncontrollably at his joke about Brexit being a laxative….
I’ve never actually ‘got’ Top Gear. I regard a car as a mobile stereo. No more, no less. I was never impressed with the bantz; privileged, blokey, bollocks spouted by a couple of knobs, ripping the piss out of a geeky guy who actually knew something.
I don’t think I’ll be watching Extra Gear, although I thought Holly Willoughby was marvellous on The Xtra Factor.
Moose has threatened to take his ‘hurrrs’ elsewhere. Holly Willoughby – hurrrr. With apologies.
Oh come on, bunglie. Hurr with conviction. Never apologise!
I bet you’re not the only one who regards a car as a mobile stereo. That aspect is never covered on TG or in any of the car magazines. Not sure if it could spin off another show, but maybe an episode.
I think Lexuses (Lexi?) have Mark Levinson stereos and B&O, Bose, Burmester, Linn and Meridian equipment is available in various marques. A completely static (but noisy) road test? I’d be interested.
My wife drove a Range Rover Evoque for a number of years – wonderful Meridian system in it. Pity the bloody car was so expensive to fuel, service and finance because that hi-fi was astonishing. Lexus often came with Nakamichi rigouts in the early to mid 90s and these were splendid, too.
Lexuses (Lexi?) were basically designed around the stereo system (sort of).
The design principles were: make the best car possible for the price range, and make sure it is the best layout for drivers and passengers
I’d definitely watch that episode; cheapest car with the most luxurious stereo. It’s all in the bottom end, I find.
Don’t know about this Extra Gear thing but I watched the new Top Gear for the first time just now. It was okay, actually. The first Rolls Royce film was beautifully shot and the thing with the Jaguar test driver was quite moving. That Matt Bianco is a hugely engaging presenter but Mick Hucknall is a bit of a tool.
This week’s was much better. I enjoyed it more than with the old lot presenting, the casual racism etc had got boring and predictable.
Joey in the Roller, was as good a piece of work as the other 3 have done in years.
Evans starting to calm down, and the new presenters’ enthusiasm, should see the brand continue successfully.
I do fast forward the celebs bit though, it’s as rubbish as before.
