(Don’t Fear) The Reaper is of course fantastic in and of itself, but I must admit to never having ventured into the rest of the band’s Öeuvre (see what I did there?).
Worth exploring?

Absolutely – but be warned that very little else of theirs is like (DF)TR. The album it’s from, Agents of Fortune, is fine but it could easily be argued that the follow-up, Spectres, is more consistent. There’s quite a lot of variation because all the band wrote and sang, and most of the songs were collaborations.
My own favourite of theirs would be Secret Treaties.
Imaginos is yer man. Not thought of as a proper BOC album by people you really wouldn’t want to share a bag of Werthers with, but who cares what they think? It’s a mighty, towering, epic piece of work. Needs resequencing, though – I got this from a *ulp* Steve Hoffman thread, I think, but it works much better: Les Invisibles, Imaginos, Del Rio’s Song, Blue Oyster Cult, Astronomy, I Am The One You Warned Me Of, In The Presence Of Another World, TSAIOBVFCAW, Magna Of Illusion.
Headphones, volume, a dark room …. you’re away.
Correct on all points. “Imaginos” is a great album.
Fatima – be mine! I will clasp your sumptuousness under the Casbah moon. You arouse in me Manly Urges that cannot be denied! I will play you as the musician plucks the zither! Our juices will merge under the silken canopy of night!
Run, fatima. Run like the wind and don’t look back.
🙂
Yes, Fatima! Run into my arms! My embrace is that of the python curling moistly around his prey! My Manhood is a gushing fountain of pearly love fluid! I must anoint you thereof!
You know he people say “you won the internet” with such and such comment. What’s the opposite of that?
Bloated halibut.
I hope you’re proud of yourself, Mr Buzzkill.
Hey! Butt out, Bartle! Me an’ Fatima … we got a thang goin’ here … hey … where she go?
I suspect she’s running faster than Daley Thomson being chased by Carl Lewis.
Yeah … thanks to you, Buttinsky.
Aw, did your gushing fountain of pearly love fluid curdle, HP?
Did I miss something?
Luckily for you I think HP’s having one of his (nine) scheduled naps right now.
Huh? Wha … I just had this incredible dream … oh dear. Little whoopsie there.
brb
Is the correct answer. Best on blue vinyl, of course.
I would start with:
Early seventies output: On Your Feet Or On Your Knees (live album)
Late seventies output: Some Enchanted Evening (live)
Eighties : Fire of Unknown Origin
Then you can head into points unknown from there…
Just one? SEE.
I recall being a big fan of their first few albums – self-titled debut, Tyranny and Mutation, Secret Treaties and On your feet… – some great tunes and strange song writing (mainly down to producer Sandy Pearlman I think) with eye-catching titles like “She’s as beautiful as a foot”. Almost poppy at times in between the crunching heavier stuff.
One of the more left field acts chosen for the 1980s Donington festivals?
We give up.
I had a double live album of theirs decades ago, Extraterrestrial Live I think. I’d read they were supposed to be the yankeedoodledandy equivalent of my beloved Sabbath. The album featured enormous silliness like Godzilla and Dominance and Submission. I tried to like it, I really did, but it was a huge relief when the Reaper arpeggio started.
I recently bought some vinly from someone on the internet and he ‘wrapped’ my spoils with 2 copies of another live album of theirs. A cursory listen to the discs now being used as packing material did not improve my opinion.
If you insist on listening to all the wrong albums, there’s very little we can do for you.
Was it Einstein who said “By thy double live album shall ye be judged”
No. Ordinarily it’s a theory I’d be proud to espouse, save for two things: 1) it’s yours, and b) it’s wrong. Anyway, OYFOOYK is fookyn’ great. So nyer.
“Oh no, they say he’s got to go go go Godzilla!
Oh no, there goes Tokyo go go Godzilla!”
Like a camper version of Kiss.
You can call Frank camp if you like, but there are many who would cry foul.
The monster,
Which the peasants in this area call FRUNOBULAX
(Apparently a very large poodle dog)
Has just been seen approaching The Power Plant
Bullets can’t stop it
Rockets can’t stop it
We may have to use NUCLEAR FORCE!
Find myself agreeing with you. Something is very wrong. OYFOOYK is a great acronym, and coincidentally the title of the next single from the Liam Gallagher album.
Great cover art mind, which I’d reproduce if imgur wasn’t such a pita.
In case anybody hasn’t mentioned it. because I can’t be arsed reading this thread, you need to look at Julian Cope’s chapter on BOC in Copendium.
Reaper is their equivalent of Hole in My Shoe – the big hit single that’s totally unrepresentative of their output. Brilliant record though but.
Knowing BOC music fairly well, I’d say my favourite is Spectres (great cover matching music inside, too). And then Imaginos. For pure r’n’r fun, of course, the live one On your feet or…
I have all their albums (so there) and I reckon Secret Treaties is the best – Flaming Telepaths, Dominance & Submission, Cagey Cretins ….. I’d skip the live albums other than On Your Feet
