The greatest single ever released, and hence by default the greatest metal single. That doesn’t necessarily make it the best metal song, but I can’t think of a better one.
Another outside bet?
One of those Metal songs that starts with acoustic guitar, and then gets “quite” loud.
Complete with high pitched vocals, proggy inflections and the obligatory screaamy. shredding, musical -wankery guitar solo.
Helloween – Keeper Of The Seven Keys
Good song, fine album. Probably not the Greatest Metal Song because it’s not in the same “Knowledge League” as Ace Of Spades, Paranoid or Hallowed Be Thy Name
Crest Of A Knave is an OK album, but it ain’t Metal.
It beat Metallica’s … And Justice For All, which was pretty badly produced, badly mixed and frankly hard work. But it did contain this:
Yes I wavered between “Puppets” and “One” which is the Stairway of 80’s thrash, contemplative section then riffs and soloing to the end
Then there’s Blackened, For Who The Bell Tolls etc. I’m not saying Metallica are the most original band in the world but as a sum of their influences they were close to perfection at times.
Now the metal ‘Rolling Stones’ but still capable of shredding, man
Unlikely as it may seem, 20-odd years ago I was the metal reviewer for a street paper in Australia. Pantera were huge at the time and this was one of their best tracks, before it all turned to shit:
This is properly one of my favourite songs of all time. What a riff. The sheer grooving energy of this tune still makes me behave improperly for my age.
The trouble with having been weaned on genuinely heavy music means that, as much as I like Sabbath and even have a sneaking love of “Am I Evil”, anything before the 80s thrash revolution doesn’t really sound like metal to me. Just heavy-ish rock.
Guns n’ Roses were perfect, but they’re not metal.
Mötörhead are perfect, but they’re not metal.
Even Maiden aren’t really that metal. Well, no – they’re metal, but they’re not that heavy.
So for me, DFB got it right with Master Of Puppets. Or anything off Metallica’s first four albums.
I genuinely love that Pantera track. Fabulous riff, so much energy and just little things like the way Dimebag plays behind the nut at 0:24 (and several other places).
I made the mistake of reading the lyrics once though and realised I was too old for this shit. The words are just arrant bollocks.
Oh the entire lyric sheet for Vulgar Display Of Power is hilarious. It’s a cracking album, though: this, Walk, A New Level, Fucking Hostile – all amazing. But unfortunately the effect is slightly ruined by a) as you say, reading the hilarious Begbie lyrics and b) Hollow, the final track. A shit power ballad featuring twin guitar solos and Phil Anselmo making the massive strategic error of singing rather than bellowing with rage. Not that he can’t sing – he can – but it’s absolute bollocks on toast.
By “turned to shit” I was referring not to the music, but to the turmoil within the band which resulted in drug overdoses, loss of direction and eventual disbandment
I saw Slayer live at Hammersmith Odeon in 1991. It was the days before mosh pits so all the seats were still in place. We had numbered tickets but no one actually sat down, The audience simply filed in and stood at their allotted seat for 2 hours. It was quite bizarre.
Described by Dave Grohl as “a metal track with a carnival passing through it”, it doesn’t sound like anything else. It’s heavy and rifftastic and has a dark power while still letting a bit of light in, which is not an easy balance.
Otherwise, it has to be Metallica. One or Battery, either will do.
Good thread. Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica and Slayer are heavy metal’s greatest performers.
AC/DC and G’n’R were/are hard rock’n’roll bands. Blackmore’s Rainbow were rather more subtle, medieval power rock. Saxon And Diamond Head are B-listers though their first few albums set the template for the NWOBHM.
Personally I’d go for this as greatest ever metal track. It ticks all the boxes: riff, solo, Satan, screaming vocals, thumping drums, great bass line.
Some excellent examples of the much derided genre that got me into music of all (well, most) descriptions.
Hard to argue with Sabbath (Dio and Ozzy years) Metallica and the mighty Motorhead, although my favourite Maiden track is probably Wasted Years, for some reason, which doesn’t get much of a mention in any of these kind of lists. Judas Priest just passed me by and I’ve never really seen them for anything other than an almost parody band (the OTT leather and studs imagery, riding motorbikes on stage through a wall of fake Marshall stacks etc) . Millions disagree, though.
Good to see A Light in the Black get a mention, it’s a great song. Metal? Maybe not, but a great song. As is Stargazer. As is Eyes of the World.
AC/DC aren’t “heavy metal”, so they’re out.
On balance, I’d probably vote, if I had to, for Puppets. With a side order of a couple that haven’t been mentioned.
Her’s hoping the links work.
Metallica – Creeping Death
Not as good as Roundabout though,
Weird shit happening with the blog!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J51LPlP-s9o
I think you were right the first time
Rainbow – Stargazer
https://youtu.be/W6CjO0H2j0s
Circles and rings, dragons and kings…
Neon Knights!
Heaven and Hell as an album is probably unsurpassed as the best A side of a Metal Album ever.
Master Of Puppets – classical type intro / riffage / growling gruff vocals probably about Satan or summat
The 14 year old me would have loved that, I haven’t heard it before and stopped at 1 minute in.
I am 50.
Top band and a great track.
I prefer this off the same album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYrW3yONR44
Rainbow= not a heavy metal band
they have heavy roots but they’re more subtle than that
No, it’s this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6WTwi1gw90
You are possibly correct.
Aah .. veering into my area of expertise (I think?).
How about Motorhead – Overkill
(Aces Of Spades would’ve been too obvious, but is definitely on the list)
Black Sabbath – War Pigs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVnwyUo_Xsk
Metallica – Four Horseman
or maybe I meant this one?
Seek & Destroy
and the one that taught Metallica everything they knew
Diamond Head – Am I Evil
Judas Priest – Screaming For Vengance
No
OK, I (grudingly) accept your “No”.
How about this one:
Iron Maiden – Phantom Of The Opera
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8IuFl3sMhk
This was my 2nd choice
Top tune off their best album but still….No.
The greatest heavy metal song is actually 1000 Homo DJs cover of Supernaut by Black Sabbath.
Outside bet?
Faith No More – Epic
The greatest single ever released, and hence by default the greatest metal single. That doesn’t necessarily make it the best metal song, but I can’t think of a better one.
Agreed….threefold, with knobs on…..
Nice.
Shit. Forgot about Ace Of Spades.
Cancel Supernaut, the best metal song is Ace Of Spades.
No I haven’t posted it. Because you all know it. Which is why it’s the best metal song ever.
This was thrilling, dangerous and downright sleazy. Before the madness and egotism kicked in
I love that. Appetite for Destruction and Hysteria were my 1988 soundtrack.
Another outside bet?

No. An Iron Maiden Z side. Awful pastiche rubbish IMHO.
That one off the album that won Jethro Tull a Grammy…
This one?

A pedant writes:
The Grammy was for best hard rock/metal performance. I think you could just about call Steel Monkey hard rock.
He’s not getting back in the van unless he hears Alan say they’re Heavy Metal!
If only they’d finished Excalibur – that had all the makings of a true Classic.

That was before it all turned shit?
Oh dear…
No!!!!!
Tuneless rubbish.
Relax grandad. The kids loved it.
By “turned to shit” I was referring not to the music, but to the turmoil within the band which resulted in drug overdoses, loss of direction and eventual disbandment
The kids were clearly delusional
…this one;
If you don’t believe me, ask Metallica;
747 is better IMHO.
Black Sabbath – Iron man
https://youtu.be/mIl-kndAduY
Got to be this;
Angel Of Death by Slayer
Has it all
Oooh, yes, a belter. And it’s got no shortage of company on Reign In Blood – what a record.
You’re right there Bob.
Not a duffer on that album.
Bought it on day of British release in 1987 and never got bored of it
I saw Slayer live at Hammersmith Odeon in 1991. It was the days before mosh pits so all the seats were still in place. We had numbered tickets but no one actually sat down, The audience simply filed in and stood at their allotted seat for 2 hours. It was quite bizarre.
Oh no….a nasty noise.
I guess I am an old school blues based hard rock fan rather than a true metal head.
Roots Bloody Roots by Sepultura.
Further considerations:
Ozzy Osbourne – I Don’t Know
Venom – Black Metal
(If nothing else, it is very Heavy)
Megadeth – Rattlehead
I lured you in with Iron Maiden but the true answer is Heatstrokes by Krokus.
@uncle-wheaty “… old school blues based hard rock …”.
Like this?
Exactly!

I think the answer is Fairies Wear Boots
If you can pick Black Sabbath then I can have Budgie. So there.
That was very good, I enjoyed that.
Judas Priest.
How can we get this far in the thread without them.
Diamonds and Rust from Unleashed in the East….marvellous!
And some more
My JP vote remains with Screaming For Vengeance (above).
“Breaking The Law” – good song, but not in the same league as these choice cuts
Metallica – Enter the Sandman at volume 11 has to be in with a shout shurely..?
Some excellent examples of the much derided genre that got me into music of all (well, most) descriptions.
