This week’s current Best Record Of All Time is the 1999 remaster of The Doors “Riders On The Storm”.
I’m not a great Doors fan, but everything on this, and John Densmore’s drums in particular, was obviously absolutely impeccably recorded by Bruce Botnick at the time. Loads of space around everything in it.
The remaster by him and Bernie Grundman really shows the care that was taken. And of course it’s an absolutely epic choon.
Of course the YouTube clip, with it’s severely compressed sound, doesn’t do it full justice.
Just got the box set and working my way through it… But was a bit disappointed by “Riders” – seems to have lost the sinister background whispered vocals?
Spoons, yes good … But I was trying to seek enlightenment – has the background whisper been remastered away? Or have I just not listened closely enough? And what other changes have been made? Have to say I don’t like the extra bit on the end of The Wasp thought the little bit at the star of Soft Parade is amusing (?)…
It’s perfect.
It’s featured in two TV shows recently, ‘Hap & Leonard’ and ‘American Gods’ , both occasions during driving scenes (if memory serves me well) and sounded fantastic both times.
Today it is this …. American Rock by Denim. I’ve had the two minute outro running around in my head for the last week.
Tomorrow my best ever record will be something else* … and I know what.
(* I figured that I couldn’t have two current “best” records of all time, so I will have to post them on consecutive days. This thread will run and run.)
CCR, to me, used to be just one of those bands whose records I’d hear occasionally on the radio & sounded quite good, but I didn’t feel the need to explore any further. Then, during one of my regular visits to Edinburgh I was in a bar having a pint & reading a hi-fi mag. The music playing was a CD of CCR’s greatest hits, and every track was brilliant. Since that day I’ve been a huge fan, and think ‘Grapevine’ and ‘I Put a Spell on You’ are among the very best cover versions ever.
@DougieJ absolutely love CCR and on a road trip to Germany when my son was around 14 they were the soundtrack to our trip. He loves them too. Have to disagree on favourite CCR though – Looking out my back door gets my vote.
I am currently enjoying two 80’s ‘rediscoveries’ in the form of Bananarama- Love in the First Degree and Style Council- You’re The Best Thing. I’m sure you know what they sound like so I won’t post them*
It’s a new week and I have a new Current Best Record Of All Time.
It’s now “Peace Piece” by Bill Evans from “Everybody Digs Bill Evans”.
In 1958 he was playing the sort of tranc-ey solo piano tunes that Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm etc. are wowing everybody with now.
Have a listen.
My BestRecordOfAllTime is…what it’s always been:
Every now and then I think I should change My BestRecordOfAllTime to this, but I never do:
This is my current ‘Jam’ as the kids say.
Beautiful.

Yes.
The fadeout solo on the spoons is missing too.

Sorry Mick I can’t help you there, I was just being silly…. again.

It’s “Run Through The Jungle” for me, chaps. As it has been for quite a few years.
The single greatest CCR track for me has always been Green River. Great band!
