No one can go deep undercover like me, There has been some worrying noises recently about the suggestion that the Massive may be losing its vice-like grip on contemporary youth culture and losing touch with the kids out there – the kids on the street, yeah?
So when my nine year old boy asked me to the School Disco, I didn’t see it as a tedious excursion to the world of forced jollity that only teachers can enfoist – more an opportunity. What are listening to? What is moving our kids? So here I am.
Right now it’s the Witch Doctor which iirc is Homer Simpson’s favourite song. The undoubted highlight so far has been Baby Shark. The floor crammed with tots going ape crazy.
I have also learned about the Flossing dance and the Orange Justice dance. These are apparently from the video game Fortnite (Ross Schwimmer voice) I did not know that.
Hells teeth now they’re playing YMCA. One for the parents apparently. Oh god now it’s the Birdy Song. They had a version of Marcerena earlier that’s got Alison Moyet’s laugh in it. Again I did not know that.
Oh I see – there’s an 80s theme going on. That’s why there is a girl dressed as a Rubio cube. My boy said “she’s a puzzle I am never going to solve”. He’s bloody clever sometimes.
Anyway it’s the dance off soon – I’ll be taking over the deckz and I can’t wait to blow the roof off with Ghost Town.
Hope you’ve picked up a few things. You’re very welcome.

I used to attend Twang Jr’s primary school disco sometimes and they’re great fun. The boys all dance with each other as they wouldn’t be seen dancing with girls, obviously. TJ, being of older parents, requested “School’s out” which they actually played and took the roof off.
He’s clearly been very well brought up.
Stick! Stick! Stick! Stick!
Sticky! Sticky!
Stick! Stick!
This was popular and is well catchy…

“she’s a puzzle I am never going to solve” – Brilliant!
When mine were 9, already with a highly developed sense of irony, this ruled – an advert for a large Japanese pudding

“She’s a puzzle I am never going to solve…”
So far they all have been.
This is kids favourite at the last KS2 school disco.
I have got to like it!
Yes, my 17 year old dismisses Imagine Dragons as kids music but this song and Thunder are distinctive and memorable hit records in the traditional sense – you hear them on the radio, school discos, shops etc.
