This was bloody brilliant. The whole of the Black Sea album (pre re-issues and re-masters), rendered so well that I now have to go back and reconsider Burning With Optimisms Flames because I think I misjudged it.
Then after an intermission a quick canter through the rest of the catalog, a few hits (like Nigel) and some famous tracks (Chalk Hills and Children). Great musicianship (as promised by Mousey), really authentic sounding. They even managed to emulate a lot of double tracking, for voices, guitars, keyboards, drums…and you don’t hear Travels In Nihilon every day now do you ?
The audience:
The audience was one of *the* amazing things – it was The Massive incarnate, like every Mingle photo I’ve ever seen extrapolated. If there was an Afterword demographic in inner western Sydney they all turned up – 200-300 in a pokey fire trap warehouse; what’s not to love.
It made me think..
I’ll be back for a Nonsuch night. And I finally realised (through a bit of googling) that when I actually saw XTC in Dunstable in 1981, it was their last-but-one UK concert. » Continue Reading.

Well, this was a very pleasant surprise. I didn’t know Clouds when they were a going concern back in the late 80s/early 90s, back when I first arrived in Oz. When I did become aware in recent years, the few Youtube videos I saw led me to believe they’d be a bit wan and fey – not my sort of thing at all. But I went anyway because I know one of the band, and the surprise was a very muscular sound, way more so than even their recent videos. I’d credit the drummer a lot for that, very solid, very tight, very sharp, and the lead guitar chopping around on top – very much my sort of thing indeed.
I still couldn’t tell you a single thing they played (entirely due to my general ignorance), but it was a really enjoyable night. A nice blend of tempos and dynamics. Worth catching if they’re round your way on an Australian national tour this month.
The audience:
As far as I could see, almost exclusively people who’d have been 20ish in 89, but that’s to be expected with a heritage act I guess
Freedom for Canvey!?$@!? All a bit ‘Passport to Pimlico’ isn’t it…will Wilko need a passport to gig ‘on the mainland’?
I saw this Grauniad article and thought wow, Bob Downe directing Star Wars, now that is what I call left-field. Turns out I’m just an idiot and confused Mark Trevorrow and Colin Trevorrow. Still an appealing idea though.
Here’s Bob doing the pina colada song. No, don’t thank me, all part of the service.

The Infinity Sessions, 4 weeks and a lot of footage (in the comments) as previewed by Mousey back in https://theafterword.co.uk/new-ways-to-record-an-album/
Evening of Sunday Sept 17 at the brass monkey in Cronulla. Can’t immediately see any of their stuff on YT.
Merde. Il pleut a Sydney.
So The Stranglers are touring the land of Aus in the new year, so I wondered if anyone here’s seen them lately and whether it’s going to be worth going ? Any thoughts from the Massive ?
Yet another WTF Podcast alert, this time Maron was talking to Keb’ Mo’ and Taj Mahal. Quite interesting, even veering into a little bit of guitar nerdery.
Further to @twang ‘s post back in January (https://theafterword.co.uk/alternatives-to-photobucket/) it seems that Photobucket have decided they’re going to ping you US$400 for the privilege of hosting your pics for consumption on blogs like these. If you have an account there, it might be time to make sure you have your own copies and accelerate your decision on an alternative hoster…

So, off to the Enmore to see Icehouse. I had hopes given a longstanding love of their albums, saw them back in the 80s, and I was warm to the idea of a hits package. It seemed like a good idea, that they would have been well oiled from a series of dates earlier through the year. And yet, it was a huge disappointment.
Iva and Paul are very obviously the old stagers to pass muster for calling it Icehouse, just with the sound of a very competent tribute band / pub covers band behind them. That said, Iva could presumably turn up with anyone and call himself Icehouse. I couldn’t fault them technically as musicians, but it took me about 3 or 4 numbers to realise my main issue – they were playing them too fast, like they had to get through too much material before curfew. The drummer was good technically, even the joke drum solo was tolerably short. But every song was metronomic, right on the beat with none of the swing in the original tracks (at least how I hear them).
Then there were the high notes…that Iva isn’t » Continue Reading.
The Jesus and Mary Chain are musical guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert tonight. Didn’t see that coming. Genuinely surprised.
We are a few hours behind the US, but I expect it’ll be on YouTube soon enough
Have we done a Steve Hackett best-of recommendations or where to start clip-fest ? I can’t find one.
Anyway, many moons ago (early 90s I’m referring to here) there was a Saturday sports show on Ch9 in Oz, the Wide World of Sports. It was as tedious as it’s UK brethren I can assure you. But every now and then there’d be something of niche interest that hit the spot, and there was a surfing video which to the best of my knowledge had a Hackett track as the soundtrack which I could never place. Probably because I was completely wrong, but what the hey…could have easily been Steve Hillage or Steve Coogan given my general lack of awareness at the time (and since).
So there have been many Hackett reviews and references round these parts, almost as much love as RT, so what’s the good oil ? What’s the G.O. ? Where should I start on Youtube ?
The latest Nerdist podcast is an interview with Dave Gahan. Should be interesting. Will report back when I have wifi….

Frontman from Jet previews his upcoming solo album with his Italian backing band, to an audience of what looked to be predominantly music industry types. Strangely enough it was a pretty good night anyway. We went on a gamble and it was worth it.
Support was Olympia, a solo singer/muso backing herself with pedals and loops, alternating between guitar and keyboards. This was pretty interesting and effective, building up walls of sound and stacked vocal harmonies. I’d listen to that again. Damned if I could remember what the lyrical content was about though, even as the songs finished. I may have been toasted by this point.
Then the main act came on. The songs came across really well. I have little or no knowledge of Jet, let alone this album which hasn’t been released yet, but it was a really good blend of hard rock and a fair chunk of soul. My only quibble was a couple of tracks that were basically wall-to-wall cliches musically and lyrically. But that said, the album will be worth checking out, and hopefully the recording will do the band justice.
The all-Italian backing was 2 drummers, keyboards, » Continue Reading.
I’ve realised that no matter how much I like a piece of music, when my 10 year old insists on playing one track on repeat for hours (or at least feels and seems like it), I will eventually come to hate it.
It’s my own stupid fault I ‘spose. He loves Guardians of the Galaxy, I bought him the ‘Awesome mix’ soundtrack as a cheapie in a 2-for-3 at JB Hifi, ripped it to his iPod, and he started playing “Hooked on a Feeling” over and over and over….that was most of last week. I couldn’t shake HoaF as an earworm one day last week at work, it just kept going round inside my head. Not even my usual antidote to all things Billy Joel could shift it – singing Centrefold to myself.
Yesterday was the turn of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. On repeat. Till I had to leave the house. I won’t be able to listen to either of them again.
Also means we’ll have to be very careful and selective about what he gets on his iPod.
I love John Clarke. Some of the funniest stuff I’ve ever seen. Clever too.

As advertised, this was very much a work in progress. Preparing for a London run in July, it was definitely a bit ragged around the edges, but it was an immensely charming evening.
I’d not seen him live before, only heard of his reputation in passing. Since reading Stewart Lee’s brilliant “How I Escaped My Certain Fate” praising him to the skies and insulting him mercilessly, and in the wake of the ComCom podcast (mentioned elsewhere) which carried a lorraluv, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Glad I did – well worth the trek across town in the rain.
Yes, his own closing assessment (“zero structure, some content”) was valid, and there were a couple of small patches that sounded like familiar themes from many years ago, on the whole it was thoroughly enjoyable. Even when he was struggling to remember his own threads of logic and material the crowd were happy to play along and have fun. The crowd work was interesting, and I’m pretty sure the observational comedy surrounding Tim Tams won’t make it to London. Worked for us though. Local jokes get you local work » Continue Reading.
For those of us in the land of Oz, Daniel Kitson is touring. That was remarkable enough, but next week in Sydney he’s playing a tiny venue I had never heard of, and for a ticket price I havent seen since the 80’s, or maybe the 70’s – $12.
For those who like Stewart Lee, and possibly for those who hate him too, there’s a brilliant interview with him on The Comedian’s Comedian podcast, where among other things he explains the character ‘stewart lee’ that he’s playing (or maybe it’s multiple “characters”) and why he approaches some things the way he does. I found it very interesting, but it is very long though, around 2 hours…

The Metro, Sydney

The Damned came to The Metro in Sydney. What can I say… It was heaps of fun, the place was rammed full, they played pretty much all the hits and most of Machine Gun Etiquette. I had spent the afternoon listening to the oldies and they had all the best stuff included. That old Proustian rush kicked in right away with Melody Lee as the opener, weaving through New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Waiting For The Blackout, History of The World pt 1, Looking At You, Disco Man, Billy Bad Breaks, Stranger On The Town, Love Song, Noise Noise Noise, Anti-Pope (among others) and Smash It Up for an encore, it was great stuff.
The audience:
The crowd was about 80-90% in the 50+ age group, and 70-80% male, with lots of ill-advised singlet/wife-beater tee shirts and a couple of magnificent mohawks.
The dipsticks doing flash photography from near the mixing desk only got blinding flashback from the bald spots in front. There was even a bit of an OAP mosh pit going on in front of the Captain, although it seemed to be limited to pushing each other from side to » Continue Reading.
So I thought I had a pretty good handle on what I thought was the most beautiful car in the world, and it’s close rival. Then I saw both of them in a local store yesterday, the Industrie Garage in inner western Sydney. Images below.
Can anyone come up with anything (automotive) more beautiful ?
Oi @twang – there’s a band called ‘A Band Called Twang’ playing Sydney this weekend. Thought you should know. Or you’re actually in the band (and you’re already here). Either way, maybe we should do something to commemorate the occasion – maybe record it and post the results, no matter how glorious and/or hideous…
Is anyone else struck by the likeness between Martin Shaw and Stewart Lee ? Have they been seen in the same room ? Both from Birmingham…related perhaps ? Images below.
