Have we done a Steve Hackett best-of recommendations or where to start clip-fest ? I can’t find one.
Anyway, many moons ago (early 90s I’m referring to here) there was a Saturday sports show on Ch9 in Oz, the Wide World of Sports. It was as tedious as it’s UK brethren I can assure you. But every now and then there’d be something of niche interest that hit the spot, and there was a surfing video which to the best of my knowledge had a Hackett track as the soundtrack which I could never place. Probably because I was completely wrong, but what the hey…could have easily been Steve Hillage or Steve Coogan given my general lack of awareness at the time (and since).
So there have been many Hackett reviews and references round these parts, almost as much love as RT, so what’s the good oil ? What’s the G.O. ? Where should I start on Youtube ?
The surfing video was one of those many occasions where the people in movies or TV who have encyclopaedic knowledge of music that they can recall and fit to the mood of a piece of film or environment is astounding.
He is playing the Enmore on August 4 Harry. And for 3-400 bucks you can meet and greet. FFS -dreamin’

Steve Hackett is extremely prolific with getting on for an album a year since he left Genesis in 1977, during the mixing of Seconds Out. Therefore the track you mention could take some finding. If you have any interest in Genesis themselves, his first album Voyage of the Acolyte is essential. Recorded while still with the group, it features appearances from Collins and Rutherford.
Post Genesis, Spectral Mornings (1979) is probably the best starting point, the title track especially.
He has recorded in a variety of styles that it is difficult to keep up: Classical, blues, AOR (GTR with Steve Howe) as well as two albums of Genesis covers. Of his rock stuff, my faves are Darktown (1999) and To Watch the Storms (2003) plus a wonderful acoustic live album called There are Many Sides to the Night (1994)
Incidentally, check out his Wolflight from 2015 for possibly the worst album cover ever.
Spectral and Voyage. And if you don’t think there are any duff tracks there, Twilight is no doubt spot on.
I’d also recommend checking out Anthony Phillips’s Geese and the Ghost if you enjoy Voyage and Spectral.
Agree re Spectral Mornings and Voyage of the Acolyte. Would also add Please Don’t Touch, which is probably my favourite.
Wolflight has I agree got a naff cover, but the album itself is top quality stuff. If you get a chance go and see him live – he does a fair number of Genesis songs too if that’s your thing, currently Wind and Wuthering focussed but others too. I saw him at Southend last week and he and his band were excellent.
