Being firmly of the belief that if it aint broke don’t fix it, and also being somewhat of an Apple agnostic, despite owning both a MacBook Pro and a couple of iPads (but not an iPhone), I am usually resolutely reluctant to slavishly follow the fanboi sheep and upgrade to the latest software as and when it comes out. All my Apple machines have still been running the software they came with perfectly happily but insidiously in the background the apps have been silently updating themselves and one by one they have started to tell loser old me me that certain features are not available on the antediluvian versions of the iOS software I choose to still run So, as I had a bit of spare time this afternoon, I thought I’d upgrade my ipad mini retina to the new shiny shiny iOS9.
Big mistake.
All seemed to go well I thought as these lovely muted grey messages reassured me that all was happening as it should and I eagerly awaited joining the cool people with their Health apps and Split Screen functionality (you know the one – like Windows 7 did all those years ago).
Then as I tried to start it up again I came to a message that said “Slide to Upgrade”. So I tried Sliding. Nothing happened. Unresponsive screen (nice typeface though). Unresponsive everything in fact. iTunes can see it but I sure as hell can’t see past it.
Have now spent the best part of two hours resetting, restoring from backups, backing up the restores, resetting the restoring backups etc etc and googled around and found lo and behold I’m not the only one who’s having to put up with this crap. Still stuck at Slide to Upgrade. Loads on moans on the forums. Word from Apple? Nadah.
Still got nowhere with getting back to a useable machine. Only hope now is an appointment with a “Genius” (oh the irony) at my local Apple Store who have deigned to fit me in next Tuesday. See You Next Tuesday then.
Anybody else having the same issues? Anybody else as pissed off as me with such a hubristic company that somehow seems immune to criticism but repeatedly gets away with shoddy software, me-too products behind a cloak of so-called cool design?
Same here. Happily mine is a work issue iPad and I’ve given our IT “help” line the problem – which I did at 9am and am still waiting, so clearly not a quick fix. Doesn’t prevent me from doing my job but does prevent me from catching up on my favourite music-based website/forum when I’m at my desk – as such, am a little brassed off about it. God help them if it had happened when there was a Test Match on – how else am I meant to keep up to date with the score?
(NB I should point out that I do also use it for work – I just haven’t needed it today)
Turns out the bug is when you try to Restore from Backup. Just tried starting it as a brand new ipad and it works at last. Pain in the arse though having to redownload all my apps and enter all the passwords again.
Got home to find the GLW is updating her iPhone 6 and iPad 2. Son has updated his iphone 5 without a problem. Fingers crossed. I always wait a few weeks.
Anyone else finding the new font a bit odd? Seems like there’s a bit too much space between characters. (Yes, I know, calling this a first world problem would be generous.)
Updated to ios 9 without any problem, and it’s a bit meh as the youth might say. There’s a few new touches, but little that I would say was a massive improvement on ios 8. Maybe I’ve just not found them yet. The font is a little odd, but I’ll doubtless get used to it. Other than that, what am I missing – the look and feel are pretty similar, no?
Updated my iPad this morning and it seemed ok. However, our phone provider at work has advised us not to update our iPhones to iOS9 as there have been severe technical issues.
Well the update stalled about a third of the way in, so I did a restore from back up. Switched on today and not only is it working fine it informs me it’s now running 9.0.2!

Seems to be an issue jumping straight from iOS7 to iOS9, according to one or two sites I’ve read.
Is it safe, yet?
Updated my iPad Mini the other day, no probs that I can see. The OP problem was fixed in the first update.
I did it. Only problem is that iPhone and iPad are no longer linked up. Haven’t the foggiest how to remedy it.
Well it just fucked my iPad 4 up.
Not happy.
Oh no, sorry…fucked up how?
He stabbed it wi’ a fork, aye.
