When scrolling through a thread on my phone (which is a Samsung, ftr), especially a long one, I frequently find that the phone decides spontaneously to shoot down to the very bottom of the thread. I laboriously scroll back up to where I was, only for it to happen again a few moments later. Yes, this is very small beer, but it’s *massively* infuriating.
So, is it just my phone playing up, or do any of you have this same problem?
Yes, very curious. Happens on my iPhone too. I’m familiar with speed reading, but this is ridiculous!
I’ve not seen this issue, what type of browser are you using on your phones. Is this a recent thing or has it always happened?
I too get this on an iPhone, but didn’t like to complain, given all the work (for free) that goes into the site. Then again, I guess if I was working on such a well-loved site, I’d probably want to know about such problems…
Tim, pretty sure it’s always happened for me (since the relaunch), using Safari on iOS 8 on an iPhone 6.
It also happens when scrolling back up (e.g. just now on this very thread).
I can’t say I’ve seen the same problem on my Samsung phone but I wonder why you’re laboriously scroll back up.If you use Dolphin, there’s an overlaid up arrow at the bottom of the screen that shoots you straight back to the top – admittedly it won’t allow you to target a spot in the middle of the page but it’s a feature that is so handy on a phone screen that I’m amazed that others haven’t “borrowed” the idea.
It’s not just me then? I’m a Nexus 7 user and it is a frequent, albeit not continuous irritant.
Same for me. It’s been happening, for me, since the website came online.
I’m using Safari with iOS 8.3 on an iPad Air 2.
I assumed it was just my chunky fingers accidentally hitting the reply button on a comment as I tried to scroll…
That it’s related to the other issues with the ‘Reply’ button is my line of thinking too.
On the one hand, when I try to make a reply to a specific post the ‘Reply’ button seems not sensitive enough, and it takes several hits to achieve that successfully (most of the time, I just get scrolled to the bottom of the page to make an additional new comment). On the other hand, when I’m just scrolling down a page with my left thumb, I think the ‘Reply’ button may be too sensitive, and reads the scroll touch as an attempt to reply (hence the leap to the bottom of the page).
Having said that, I’m not sure that the leap to the bottom of the page only happens when I’m scrolling using my left thumb.
I get this, and not just on this site. I’ve always presumed it was down to sites not loading fast enough on my phone (tends to happen when I’m on a 3G connection, not WiFi), but I may be wrong….
Same thing on Nexus 7, never happens on Mac or PC. No biggie, thought it was just me
Same thing happens for me. I’m using a HTC phone. It’s been this way since the re-launch. I’m still not bothering to try and reply to comments because it simply does not work so apologies to those who feel a reply would be polite. It’s not a failure of manners on my part I can assure you.
This is not a complaint. I am very grateful for all the hard work that has been lavished upon the site. I am just adding my experiences.
Thanks for feedback. I know about the reply button issue, I’m waiting for an upgrade which I think will fix that. I find if you give it a few goes it will work but that’s not a great solution!
I didn’t know about the random scrolling issue, not had that problem on my samsung phone but will try and get to the bottom of it (if you pardon the pun).
Quick update: it’s still happening, only on the longer threads (ie the ones where you least want it to happen). Rum old business.
