So I am spending a fair amount of time on the road in the US in the next few days. Have taken a free month’s Premium Spotify subscription and now need recommendations to download about 10 albums for the trip.
Macca’s new one is already present and correct, and after perusing here today, his namesake Weller is next. What other newish releases do I need? Prizes will be given for stuff I really like ….

If you are talking guitar based music, try Ian McNabb’s latest album, Our Future In Space. Yet another cracking album from him that will no doubt pass most people by as usual.
Johnny Marr’s new album is also very good, certainly his best solo album. Going to watch him in Sheffield next month on the back of it.
If you have a liking for hip hop, drum & bass or contemporary R&B (which I think is the term that describes the good stuff, rather than the stuff in the charts and on the music channels!) I can recommend some great albums.
Fave spinners here are:
Wreckless Eric – Construction Time and Demolition
White Denim – Performance
The Necks have excelled themselves with Body. There is a long passage where they lock into a Can-like groove. Bliss!
The Coral’s new one ‘Move Through the Dawn’ is really good, breezy West Coast 70s pop/rock re imagined via The Wirral, and highly recommend the new ones from Teleman ‘Family of Aliens’ and Wild Nothing ‘Indigo’
Been meaning to get round to that, thanks for the reminder. As good as Buterfly House?
I think Butterfly House is probably their masterpiece @dave-amitri – this one doesn’t quite match it as it’s much lighter, less Psychedelic and more ‘pop’ but it’s full of great tunes and hooks.
The new Richard Thompson album “13 Rivers” came out last week. Not listened to it all yet, but the preview track was pretty good.
The new Jayhawks album “Back Roads And Abandoned Motels” should be perfect for a US road trip.
Yes, and a perfect companion would be the new Amanda Shires album “To The Sunset”
I would like to suggest Lori McKenna’s The Tree, Israel Nash’s Lifted and from last year Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters.
I would also endorse both Amanda Shires and The Jayhawks.
That’s half your list!
Jayhawks deffo, the new Boz Scaggs and ferchrissake, surprise yersel’, get the new Niteworks, ideal for steaming down the interstates.
It’s called Air Fàir An Là.
It’s feckin’ brilliant. Dai is a celtic name, yes? These are your northern bloodmates.
Not heard it yet but I’d pitch a punt at the new Curse of Lono also.
The Lemon Twigs – Go to School is the best out there at the mo IMHO. But it is a love it or hate it album.
And just started to get to grips with the new Low album, I think I love it.
Bit nervous, @ip33, put off by the reviews and promo pieces, with talk of vocoders and comparisons with Bon Iver’s latest unlistenable nonsense. Yet the last 3 Low albums are divine and their peak achievements for me. Convince me?
You’re right to be nervous. All I can say is that it’s not an ‘immediate’ album and the lyrics will take some deciphering. Good luck!
I thought my record was faulty at first….certainly an odd opener
Not an album but Electronic Sound mag have their 50 greatest Space records and this the playlist I’ve made reflecting the ones I could find on Spotify. Enjoy.
Thanks guys. 6 albums downloaded so far.
The new Glenn Jones album:
“The Giant Who Ate Himself and Other New Works For 6 & 12 String Guitar”
LARVELEY.
My favourite albums of the year include:
The Orielles – Silver Dollar Moment (untutored, indie disco fun)
Sons of Kemet – Your Queen Is a Reptile (fragrant world-dub-jazz)
The Magic Gang (chirpy, slick powerpop)
Confidence Man – Confident Music for Confident People (exuberant, daft disco-punk)
Jonathan Wilson – Rare Birds (lush fantasy West Coast rock)
Dawes – Passwords (typically astute, empathic soft rock)
Reissue
Gene Clark Sings for You
Reviews so far:
The Necks – My companion in the car begged me for something else after 9 minutes (of the 56)
Paul Weller – I liked it, it’s in the pile for more listens
The Coral – Likewise. The only other album I have is Magic and Medicine which I think I prefer (so far)
Jayhawks and Lemon Twigs next ( have their first album).
My apologies. I didn’t realise you had a companion.
Ha ha
I’d like to recommend this lovely pop album by a band called The Slow Readers Club. They sound like a cross between The Cure and New Order. Very enjoyable.
@native
Is this a new album? Some of these tracks appeared on their latest album early this year..Build a Tower.
I like them. Nothing original but it all adds up.
I’m not sure if it’s new. They have a couple of other albums on Spotify, which are also good.
