There nearly was.
Essential Records (a subsidiary of Castle) found enough money for Stiff Little Fingers to make a video of their single “Can’t Believe In You”.
A Director was engaged and he explained his idea: “With the song being about troubles with your girlfriend, I see you on a train leaving her and the platform behind”
And then Jake Burns explained the song: “It’s about the fall of the Communism in Eastern Europe, and the rise of neo Fascism”
“It’s not a love song then?”
I was intrigued to discover that Giorgos Lanthimos, director of The Favourite (not to mention The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer), has also dabbled in music videos. Eye-catching stuff, but he does not seem to have paid too much attention to the music when making them!
Indeed. Judging by his movies (though I like them), I was expecting someone pretentious with his head firmly placed up his own arse. So I found his giggling approach lovely.
I actually like this video; maybe it was supposed to be a medieval dance of death or something for a song about the arms race , but it looks quire fun. Not much to do with Canadian techno-pop though.
Or even the diving gear. Or the buried not very valuable treasure.
It’s a love song isn’t it? About a pending breakup? Am I missing something?
But then there has to be something worse. Vienna maybe?
Utterly peculiar. The bikes, climbing ropes and diving gear make them look like a group of lads out on an up-market stag night.
This could be a very rich theme.
To get things started, there is always Lionel the Stalker…
One word: Cocaine.
Billy Ocean’s Loverboy? Enjoy…
Very sexy!
I loved the lip synching.
I think I have a (quite entertaining) winner, in New Order’s True Faith video:
That was my first thought too.
Isn’t TF about getting blammoed on drugs and wanting to dance your ass off? And, if so, is this video that far off topic?

The video remained unmade
There’s so many, Ashes to Ashes by Bowie jumps to my mind.
I think the Bowie one was a major influence on this NTNON parody:

It is a great talk

Thanks Neela! I look forward to listening to that.
Giorgos is clearly a director that actors are keen to work with. Kidman, Colman, Farrell, Stone…..

Does this version make any more sense?

Despite the lack of obvious connection, it all works rather well.
