Top player and sad loss.
But, for many a decade, I’ve not been compelled to think of him as “Kevin Beetle”, as depicted in the “Antchester United” comic strip, where he starred alongside Gnat Lofthouse, Mantis Buchan and Franny Flea..
Even as a fan of East Anglia’s top club I have to admit that he was a superb player. Today there is not even a reserve player with no appearances in the premier league who is not massively financially better off and supported than he was. It is a real shame that someone so talented had to struggle in later life as he did.
Very sad to hear that.
A player of some class, but dogged by injury. I heard someone (possibly Bobby Robson) say that one of his knees resembled a bag of marbles after all the operations.
A great player and he doubled for Michael Caine in a movie!
I don’t like it that players who I collected Panini stickers and Topps cards of are now starting to die. Paul Futcher died a couple of years ago and I was really quite upset. Similarly I watched an episode of TOTP from 1986 the other day and it seemed like half the singers on it are now dead. And with all the kids TV presenters from the 70s/early 80s also starting to shuffle off it seems like big parts of our childhood are disappearing.
I support Leeds but still remember Beattie’s performance at Elland Road back then. Very few players, and certainly not from the opposition; have left such a strong impression.
A pity that the Liverpool side of the time, a team I don’t recall as being a barrel of laughs contrary to received opinion, pipped the likes of Beattie’s Ipswich, Southampton, Watford and QPR to the league title.
Tremendous player. We had him for a short spell at Boro in 1982-3 (when we were on our uppers, managed by a less than sober Malcolm Allison), but by that time his knee was completely shot, so he only managed about half a dozen games. I always thought he would have formed a great central defensive partnership with late Boro legend Willie Maddren, equally talented and even more ignored by England (never got a full cap).
KB at his best was just a brilliant defender.
I was part of the Tartan Army in that there Wemberlee in London Town in 1975 when we got humped 5-1…. Beattie scored the third goal it was I think, running from deep inside his own half to get on the the end of a Keegan cross. Good player, great athlete.

Not niche for football lovers of a certain age. Very sad.
What Dave said.
Sad news – integral part of a great team.
I spent a lot of time at Portman Road in my youth. KB was the greatest English player I ever saw.
Nothing since in football has matched the thrill of seeing him pick up the ball around halfway and surge forward.
I feel slightly tearful now. Must phone my brother.
As a Manchester United fan I always liked Kevin Beattie as a man and a footballer.
Another sad loss.
