I am not a fan of Zappa, but I know quite a few of this parish are. On listening to the new She Drew The Gun track, I noticed it was a cover of the mustachioed Watermelon in Easter Hay Hitmakers (or WIEHH if you will) track of the same name (albeit updated)
I thought this may interest a few of you here. I like it a lot but you Zappa lot may see it as sacrilege.
wrong spotify link sorry. New Four Tet is worth a listen too though! 🙂
The cover does remind me what a fine song it is. Very topical too, I fear. Trouble every day ahead with that autocrat Bad Baron Boris in power.
Zappa wrote it in 1965 after watching the Watts riots on TV.
French film maker , Claire Denis, named anerotic horror comedy film after the song.
Good to hear some proper protest music again. Best rant since Big Hard Excellent Fish.
She has form for some superb protest music
She Drew The Gun – Poem
Love that…the spirit of punk lives….. just when it is truly needed
Not a mere cover because some extra verses have been written.
Musically a bit weedy but a good job done nevertheless.
I saw her the other week and she finished with a cover of Sweet Harmony by The Beloved. That’s some range.
Blimey! I’ve got her first (?) album which has got some decent stuff on it. Will have to investigate the latest stuff.
Frank Zappa is a closed book to me I’m afraid, so can’t compare to the original. But She Drew The Gun is really great and I like the sound of this.
Here you go then. From Zappa’s first album Freak Out, from 1966.
Don’t close the book!
Love The Mothers more and more with every passing day.
My trip to London soon is being made to (a) cram in as many F.A. Cup matches as possible, and (b) to fill in gaps in the Zappa collection.
Re: Protest songs.
Listened to Dylan at Brandeis University (1963) this week.
Every song seemed relevant to the disaster that is 2019.
Probably more so than they even would have done 20 or 30 years ago.
