I think some of you have heard of, and indeed taken part in, Harkive. If you haven’t, it’s a project that collects info from contributors via the internet in order to provide a 24-hour snapshot of the how, why and where of the music we’re listening to. This year it takes place on Tues July 19th, and I was delighted to be asked to provide an example blog post* in the run up. Of course I chose a car boot day!
There are all kinds of ways to take part, including email, Twitter, Instagram etc., and contributions can take the form of tweets, blogs, photos, videos etc., then the Harkive machine harvests the lot and does fancy things with the data. Oh, and you also get entered into a prize draw where you can win all kinds of music goodies.
Anybody joining in this year?
*previous featured guests include Jude Rodgers, Stephen Duffy and the keyboardist from Suede (plus a ton of people I’ve never heard of).

Lovely stuff, mini.
Thanks moje. My mum just texted me that she liked “the abbreviations”. She used to tell us off for using language like that.
“I don’t file away records I’ve bought until I’ve listened to them three times”
is the correct answer.
Three times before filing allows:
1. first impressions
2. familiarisation
3. identifying best/worst tracks and committing liner notes to memory
As we all know, the Tiggerlion Rule states that we must listen 6 times before forming an opinion
Quite right. Currently on listen number three of It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll. Pretty great for £1.50.
Just a reminder that Harkive day is tomorrow. If you’re taking part, do let us know about it here, too (because I’m nosey).
It’s Harkive day today! Have already tweeted a couple of things using the #harkive hashtag. You can also take part on FB, and other places.
So far I’ve listened to a couple of 12″ singles and am now in the middle of a great Cambridge radio show that plays nothing but vintage 78s. How about you?
Is that DJ.78? He does occasional slots on Cerys Matthew’s sunday show on 6Music. Always entertaining.
It’s a group of DJs that take turns, all very knowledgeable and interesting chaps http://cambridge105.fm/shows/the-kipper-the-cat-show/
I have heard DJ78 before though, on Charity Shop Classics. In fact I seem to remember that the time he was a guest was also the same show on which some of my picks were played by our own @whole-hogg !
Early start today (trying to catch up on work before holidays), so…
Raime — Tooth
Old Apparatus — Compendium
Dilated Peoples — The Platform
The Herbaliser — Fabriclive 26
(am I doing this right?)
I love that Herbaliser Fabric album. The Nextmen track (“Spin it Round”) is ace, you’ve got the ever-stupendous, ever-remixable Ghostwriter, and also a track from Yungun, a hip hop MC who moonlights as a lawyer (I used to share an office with him, many moons ago – one of the nicest people I’ve ever met).
Agreed, it’s great. there’s a special place in my heart for freewheeling Golden-Age (style) mixes: this, DJ Format, Yoda etc. I like dark and menacing hip hop just as much, but this kind of stuff always feels like it’s a bit closer to the spirit of the genre.
Great. What format/device are you listening on?
An iPod hooked up to a sub-woofer/speaker type thing that you plug into your computer. I’ve had to stop listening in order to watch something for work, but I plan to resume after lunch.
Now listening to Dave Seaman — GU022. It’s about three hours long so it’ll do me for a while.
Well, it’s certainly nice to know tht the former Arsenal and England goalkeeper is putting all that spare time to good use, anyway.
I have the novelty of listening through speakers today as my work colleagues are out the office. So much better than headphones. The iPod has been on shuffle so far with a fair mix of allsorts although I sense a 50s rockabilly hour coming over the hill once Emanuel Ax has finished tinkling Haydn’s Piono Sonata #35
A bit of Radio 6 this morning over breakfast.
Eased into my train journey by Killing Joke’s Pylon.
The only thing that’s stood out at work this morning is the new Avalanches album.
Grooving on some Art Blakey in my lunchbreak.
Pylon is brill ….didn’t get much of a reaction on release but it should have.
Had a couple of AC/DC albums on earlier. The 40th anniversary edition of Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out just turned up in the post, so that’ll be me for the rest of the day, I reckon…
