Just noticed while playing A Hard Days Night on iTunes (burned from my copy that was part of The Beatles in Mono box set) the following composer listing. Even though we’re all aware many songs were largely Paul or largely John (and of Paul’s understandable but imho misguided wish to reverse the order on occasion), I’ve never seen this singular crediting before.
Any ideas?
A Hard Day’s Night – John Lennon
I Should Have Known Better – John Lennon
If I Fell – Paul McCartney/John Lennon
I’m Happy Just To Dance With You – John Lennon
And I Love Her – Paul McCartney
Tell Me Why – John Lennon
Can’t Buy Me Love – Paul McCartney
Any Time At All – John Lennon
I’ll Cry Instead – John Lennon
Things We Said Today – Paul McCartney
When I Get Home – John Lennon
You Can’t Do That – John Lennon
I’ll Be Back – Paul McCartney
Skullduggery!
No Beatles songs are officially credited solely to Lennon or McCartney.
isn’t it: lead vocal – a regular credit on the LP sleeves at beginning
Clearly not. Lennon sings lead on I’ll Be Back, for example. Happy Just To Dance is George.
Well you can prove anything with facts
Up
No meme like an old meme.
Tempted to say it’s an iTunes ‘idiosyncrasy’ but how could it separate out the names ‘John Lennon’ and ‘Paul McCartney’ from the official crediting of Lennon/McCartney?
Clearly nonsense as John was the sole or main writer on If I Fell and I’ll Be Back. Its almost his first solo album, Paul was in a bit of a songwriting dip and only came up with 3 efforts, 2 of which are wonderful (not Can’t Buy Love)
not sure whether you replied to my OP or subsequent post Dai but either way I agree. Obviously some software glitch.
CD burned to iTunes from 2009 mono remaster (subsequently sold, sadly) btw…
Not a “software glitch” – the credits that you see on iTunes are not officially attached by the record label, but grabbed from some internet source like Gracenotes which are all provided by individual users (who often seem barely capable of typing).
Just don’t believe anything that appears on your computer screen, it’s not Encyclopedia Britannica.
Can’t quite go along with your final paragraph Fatima – I’ll say no more than that we all know plenty of impeccably book bound volumes which are, nevertheless, utter bollocks.
That said, on the more specific issue of songwriting credits on iTunes I have found more conclusive evidence that it is perhaps less than accurate:
Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 (Disc 1). All written solely by Reg apparently, apart from:
GYBR (EJ & BT)
SNAFF (EJ & BT)
TD (BT & EJ)
We know And I Love Her, Can’t Buy Me Love and The Things We Said Today are bona fide Paul songs, with the rest representing John at or near the peak of his powers, including, according to Wiki, If I Fell and I’ll be Back (the two credited, or primarily credited in my mysterious list to Paul)…
