Shame, as that is a pretty good song (so there).

Happy Mondays are a good example of this, as the remixes of Wrote For Luck (WFL) by Vince Clark and Paul Oakenfold were different beasts to the original album version, and turned them into pop stars ( I think […]

ITV did a lot of dystopian drama on ITV, some of it kids-based, like “Noah’s Castle” and “King of the Castle”, but also the big-budget Quatermass finale: it’s not the best of the series (it’s no “Quatermass and […]

On the other hand Reg Varney was in the underrated but depressing 70s seaside comedy,”The Best Pair of Legs in the Business” (As Jarvis Cocker once said, it starts like a Carry On film but ends up like a Chekhov play).

On social media, Tommy Cannon of Cannon and Ball is upset about being overlooked by ITV (not the Guardian). They were not my cup of tea at all, but they were part of the 80s/90s line-up, and I feel a bit sorry for him.

In any case, the Builders episode (dependent on Irish sterotypes) is one of the misfires, I think.

Odd name for a band, but great examples of the “New Pop” Golden Age: “I”m up the bloody tree” is a great line to get onto TOTP

Redford (especially) in 1970s films is a pleasure to watch. Maybe the first Hollywood star I learnt to recognise, but this might have been because my Mum made a point of watching TV whenever he was on.

By the way, anyone else see Alex Petrides’s list of 20 best Floyd songs in the Guardian? “Wish You Were Here” at number 1.

I have no interest in Foreigner or that style of music, but this is a very thought-provoking review!

So true. Otomo Yoshihide has reinvented himself in recent years as a jazz band leader since his earlier rock/ noise/turntablism days in Ground Zero (But I find his new material a bit po-faced and humourless […]

Great stuff! I am no expert, but it seems that Poland (and Czechoslovakia) were more relaxed about jazz music than other Eastern Bloc countries.

There was a link between Japanese Jazz and 1960s student radicalism—it seems that students retained an affinity for post-bop jazz along with rock music. The Yamashita Yosuke Trio even recorded a live album( ” […]

Hard copy arriving in the post this week and looking forward to it. Bob Stanley’s curatorship of pop on Ace Records is also an ongoing marvel: anyone else heard Chip Shop Pop?

Yeah, they are great. I think the lead singer chucked it all in to become an academic of some kind, but I cannot be bothered to look it up right now.

1988: the year indie-pop got weirder, and I had a good time. Cool list. Personally, I would add AR Kane “Suicide Kiss”; MBV, “Feed Me With Your Kiss”; Dinosaur Jr, “Freak Scene”; House of Love, “Destroy the […]

The Byrds reissues from the 1990s were indeed full of marvelous bonus tracks and at no extra cost: also meant the CDs had more than the 30 minutes or so of LP music on them.
