What does it sound like?:
I wouldn’t normally review a single, but as it’s Christmas, as it’s for a good cause and as it’s Big Big Train – oh, go on then….
It’s been a very busy year for the band, with the release of two full length albums and a successful string of dates. However, they’ve come up with two new pieces, both with a seasonal theme, to round of 2017.
The main song, suitably titled Merry Christmas, is in the vein of things like I Believe In Father Christmas and Stop The Cavalry. The band is accompanied by a full strength choir, a brass band and of course there are sleigh bells in there too. The lyrics are a plea to eschew commercialism and to try and remember the innocence of Christmases past. Amen to that!
The second song is titled Snowfalls, which could be rather apt looking at the weather forecast for the coming days. This hymn to winter captures the spirit of the season, the song slowly building as it progresses, with the keyboards giving the effect of falling snow throughout the piece. A very nice effort, maybe with more longevity through not being linked to the festive period.
What does it all *mean*?
A lovely pair of songs, perfect for the time of year.

Thanks! I’ve added that to my Xmas playlist. Sounds very promising.
I am always pleased to listen to a few new Xmas songs instead of just countless covers of all the old chestnuts.

Being a BBT fan I had to have the 7″ single (lovely, very heavy white vinyl) and the CD. Bargie says it all but I’d like to add that BBT do a great job of recording a perfect Christmas song in a nice Prog/Folk vein.
