Just posted a track from John Cooper Clarke’s Snap Crackle and Bop on the Spoken word thread. On it JCC is backed by the Invisible Girls, an ad hoc group Hannett put together as a backing band for various artists including Pauline Murray.
His right hand man, keyboard player Steve Hopkins explains:
“The idea was to assemble a roster of key instrumental players, produce tracks to be fronted by different singers/stars – and get some hits!”
Manchester’s answer to Chic?
I love the albums the Girls played on but hadn’t realised that they’d also done a single with Nico. It’s powerful stuff but somehow I suspect the German chanteuse was not invited along to perform it on TOTP.

A postcard from Thatcherville.
JCC live with the Girls. Now that is a hairstyle to remember.
In 2015 an album of unreleased IG tracks was released.
A live version of a track from that wonderful Pauline Murray album.
More Pauline and the Invisible Girls live.
This time from Belgian TV!
Another live clip of John Cooper Clarke with the band. They are fairly few and far between.
cant post videos on here anymore but the studio version of this on Disguise in Love is an absolute gem……great band!
Here you go!
You may well be right. They were probably better as a studio band. That was where Hannett shone.
Thanks..this is also magnificent…………………….
